‘Talk about finding a needle in a haystack,’ said Billy, clutching his arms across his chest for warmth as he scanned the horizon. ‘Even if we knew which direction to go, how are we meant to find a tiny ice pearl in a place that is already covered in ice?’
‘Well, we’re never going to find it with that attitude,’ said Charlotte. ‘Ling-Fei, do you have any idea where the pearl might be?’
‘Let me see if I can sense anything,’ said Ling-Fei. She closed her eyes and put the tips of her fingers to her temples.
The group watched expectantly as Ling-Fei concentrated on locating the ice pearl. Billy could see her eyes darting back and forth under her eyelids. He hoped this would work. After a few moments, Ling-Fei scrunched up her face before shaking her head and opening her eyes again. ‘This place has an odd energy to it. I can’t quite explain it, but it feels… unnatural. It’s making it hard for me to sense the pearl. But I’m sensing magic, which is coming from… this direction.’ She pointed into the wasteland.
Billy followed Ling-Fei’s outstretched hand and tried to make out a distinguishable landmark to set their path, but all he could see were the rows and rows of the wave-like rock formations that blended together as seamlessly as the waves of an ocean. He couldn’t help but feel that they were heading into an endless void. But he trusted Ling-Fei. And together they were strong.
