“Daniel,” she said. “I think I’m going to die if you don’t take me right this instant.”

He closed his eyes briefly. No condom. “Are you on birth control?”

She looked at him with her eyes dark and glittering. “Are you clean?”

  “What?”

“I’m asking you if you’re clean. I know I am.”

  “Yeah, I am, but—”

“I can’t get pregnant,” she said, placing a finger on his lips. “Hurry.”

He licked her finger, felt a rough shudder rush through her. He looked at the mirror over the fireplace and knew exactly what he wanted to do.

Kissing her, he moved her to the desk and situated her until they were standing behind it. He rubbed his fingers along the seam of her sex through her panties. She was so hot and wet, he bit back a groan. “Take off everything except your boots.”

Her answering grin made his heart pound. She took a step back, her hair mussed and lips swollen and red, and removed her costume and underwear in no time at all. He dipped his head and kissed the under-curve of her breasts gently, loving the taste of her bare skin and the creamy texture of her flesh. Her fingers tunneled into his hair, and she gripped his head. There was such stark honesty in her passion. He could feel her wet heat through his tux, and his cock throbbed with the need to be inside her, but he didn’t want it to end so soon.

“Put your hands behind you on the desk and spread your legs,” he ordered.

Panting, she did as he asked and watched him through heavy-lidded eyes. He knelt before her sex and breathed gently on the delicate pink flesh. “You’re gorgeous.”

  * * *

Meredith flushed. “Daniel.” The cool air made her nipples bead, but she knew it wasn’t just the temperature making her so hot and sensitive.

  “Shhh.”

His mouth covered her flesh, and she clenched her teeth to contain a moan. He was so hot, she couldn’t help but quiver at the way he sucked and nibbled on her. Her knees felt weak, and she threw her head back as he scraped his teeth over her swollen and aching clit. Shameless, she widened her stance, feeling especially wanton in the bright red boots.

His big hands strayed down her thighs to the backs of her knees, stroking the sensitive skin there. “Play with your tits.” When she didn’t move, he nipped her inner thigh. “Do it.”

She obeyed him. She’d never touched herself like this in front of a man before, and it was so sinfully delicious. He looked at her approvingly and sucked on her clit, his eyes locked on hers. Tingling heat streaked all over her, and he took one hand from her knee and plunged a finger deep inside her. She cried out at the invasion, shocked at how amazing it felt. “More,” she moaned.

He put another finger in and pumped in and out of her. “You’re so tight, Merry. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You won’t,” she said raggedly. “Don’t stop.”

He put a third finger in, and she moaned at how stretched and full she felt between her legs. She’d forgotten how amazing it could be with the right man, and Daniel was perfect.

With his fingers thrusting in and out of her and his mouth sucking on her clit, it took no time at all before the tightness in her belly spun out of control. Her back bowed; she tried to choke off a scream as she came. Daniel kept kissing her until she stopped shuddering from the aftershocks.

He stood up, and she kissed away the slickness on his mouth. He was tense with need, and she could feel the steely hardness of his erection. Without breaking the kiss, she unzipped his pants and pulled out his cock. It was thick and long, with veins running along the velvet-smooth surface. She licked her lips delicately.

“Are you going to take off your clothes?” she asked.

“No.” He spun her around roughly. “Hold on to the desk and stick your ass out.”

Shivering with anticipation, she did as she was told. His hot hands caressed her curves, and he dipped his finger back into her. “I love it that you’re so wet for me.”

“You make me wet,” she whispered.

“I’m not going to be gentle.”

  “Thank god,” she breathed.

He cursed and pushed into her in one smooth stroke. She cried out for him not to stop, and he let out a shuddering breath and began pumping in and out of her. There was unleashed violence in his thrusts, and she loved it. She pushed back, matching his rhythm. He grabbed her hair and pulled it until her head came up. “Look at us.”

She blinked and focused on their reflection in the mirror. He looked like a stranger with the Phantom mask. He still had all his clothes on, the black tux accentuating the powerful lines of his body, while she was naked except for her boots and tiara, and the image was shockingly erotic.

His eyes met hers in the mirror. “Don’t look away.” Without waiting for her response, he took her so hard and fast, it was all she could do to hold onto the desk, her hair tumbling around and her breasts pendulating violently to every slap of his flesh against hers. There was a hot flame inside her that licked away at her mind, and she couldn’t breathe or think, couldn’t do anything except feel what he was doing to her…what she had wanted from him since forever.

The tension built inside her, and she bit her lower lip.

“Don’t. I want to hear you scream my name,” he said, thrusting into her with passion edging close to violence.

“Daniel!” she shrieked as her entire body seemed to incinerate. She bucked helplessly against him, impaled on an obdurate, pounding force of nature that seemed determined to wipe away her sanity. He was impossibly large and hard inside her, and she felt her inner muscles spasming before he finally let out a guttural cry and emptied himself inside her.

She collapsed on the desk, and he braced himself over her, his breathing hot and fast. Several moments were spent in silent recovery. Then he sat in the leather executive chair and pulled her onto his lap.

  “Thank you,” she said.

  He frowned. “For what?”

She gently removed his mask. It’d been intriguing earlier, but now she wanted to see his uncovered face. “You know. This.” She felt her face heat, then laughed. “I can’t believe I’m blushing, but…that was ultra-hot. So good.”

“We should try it again more properly.”

She wrinkled her nose. “You mean with rose petals and candles?”

  “Why not?”

“They just seem kind of, you know, staged. I mean, that sort of thing is all right, but I like this better. All mindless heat.”

“Huh. Who would’ve thought the saintly Merry had such a dirty streak in her?” A line like that could have been bad, but he said it with a smile.

“Don’t call me that. I’m not as perfect as people think.” She tucked her hair behind an ear. “Flawed and mortal, just like everyone else.”

  * * *

Daniel regarded her. Of course she was that, but he had a feeling it was only because somebody up there had made an error. She was probably meant to have been born an angel or something.

“By the way…” Merry cleared her throat. “We should probably leave this room separately. I don’t want anybody, especially my brother, to see us come downstairs together.”

“You don’t think he knows you have sex life?”

“That is so not the point. I’m trying to be discreet.”

He pulled back a little. An odd combination of hurt and surprise settled in his belly. “You want to hide this.”

“No. Well, yes. But just until I talk to—” She bit her lower lip.

  “Who?”

  She sighed. “Eric.”

“We need his permission?” Daniel stared at Merry incredulously. Her son was barely ten.

“He’s one of the most important people in my life, and I want to make sure he understands what’s going on. I don’t want him to feel awkward or anything.”

“Hasn’t he met your boyfriends before?”

“There, um, haven’t exactly been any to meet. When he was a baby, there was n
o time. I was lucky that my mom helped out, and I had a nanny, but I couldn’t bear to stay away from him. Then when he started preschool… I don’t know. I just never found anybody who didn’t run the other way every time they thought they might have to be responsible for Eric too.”

“But you never asked me about Eric.”

“You already met him, and you don’t exactly seem to be running. So…” She shrugged.

“That’s not rea— Wait a minute. You mean you haven’t had sex in ten years?”

She examined a fingernail. “Was it that obvious?”

He swallowed a curse. “Merry, Merry.” He buried his face in the sweet crook of her neck. “You should’ve said something.”

  “Why?”

“I was too rough with you! You should’ve had something better, especially after ten years of celibacy.” The notion was mind-boggling, but thinking back now, he couldn’t believe he’d missed the clues—her unusual tightness and her overly-sensitive response, like she was starved for sensual pleasure.

“Okay, you should shut up. I already told you it was fabulous.” A small frown creased her eyebrows. “I don’t regret any of what happened here. Stop wondering how you might have done it differently if you knew. It really was amazing.”

Daniel stroked her silky-smooth shoulder and wondered how, in the modern, cutthroat world, a woman this soft and sweet could exist. She spoke like everything she’d denied herself was just…par for the course. But then she’d thought giving Rob another chance was entirely natural as well. It was like she had no idea how to put herself first or respond with anything other than empathy and understanding.

A small part of his mind shivered—could such a person be real? Maybe he was being overly sentimental and gullible in the post-coital glow.

But a bigger part of him wanted to hold tightly onto her. Merry was so special, so precious, he was afraid if he relaxed his grip just a little bit, she’d vanish, never to return.

  * * *

Meredith closed the study door after herself and quietly made her way downstairs. Daniel had left about fifteen minutes earlier.

As much as she had enjoyed their time together, she couldn’t help but wonder if she was being stupid. She hadn’t even thought about Eric until afterwards, and she’d been serious when she’d said she needed to let Eric know. Her son wasn’t used to her dating. He had asked her once if she planned to marry anybody, and she’d told him probably not.

Having a good father figure would be great for Eric…if it just weren’t for the fact that it was Daniel. He hadn’t noticed anything suspicious at the dinner. On the other hand, he might have been a bit distracted, meeting Alex and Ethan’s wives for the first time. Things might have gone differently if Daniel had focused more of his attention on the boy.

She wanted to believe Daniel wouldn’t find the truth about Eric to be a betrayal, but there was no guarantee. She’d been so careful to hide it that not even Ethan or Gavin had been able to find out anything about the circumstances surrounding Eric’s birth. Thankfully their mother, the one person Meredith could never lie to, hadn’t pressed.

If she could, Meredith wanted to take the secret to her grave. Eric was happy where he was. The truth would only screw things up, and she didn’t want anything to hurt her son.

She arrived at the base of the staircase. She touched her tiara, making sure that it was properly set, pasted a smile on her face and re-joined the party.

  Chapter Fifteen

Early the next morning, a bouquet of bright pink roses came to Meredith’s place. She signed for it and read the card: From your Phantom Admirer.

She smiled at the sweet gesture, put the flowers in some water and hurried to get ready for the family brunch at her mom’s—a new weekly tradition that Barron had insisted on starting. Just as Meredith was about to leave, the doorbell rang. Better not be some salesman, she thought, putting in an earring as she made her way to the door.

On her doorstep stood Barron, Eric and Bear. Eric held a big trash bag that was near to bursting—most likely with candy—and Bear thumped his tail with a big doggy smile. Meredith blinked. “What are you doing here?”

“No brunch today.” Barron’s scowl was darker than a midwinter blizzard. “Stella came down with some sort of bug. I don’t think it’s the flu, but if it doesn’t get better today, I’m taking her to the ER.” His mouth was set in a flat line. “No need to concern yourself.”

“You tried to take her to the hospital already, but she said no, didn’t she?” Meredith guessed.

Barron’s moustache bristled. “You know your mother well.”

She gave him a small smile. “Want to come in for some tea or coffee before you drive back?”

“No, it’s all right. I’m heading right back.”

“Let me guess. She made you bring Eric home so you don’t drive her crazy.”

“Yes!” Barron threw his hands up in the air. “Can you believe that nonsense? She prefers Miles to oversee her convalescence!” Miles was Barron’s chauffeur.

Meredith’s mouth twitched in the beginning of a smile, and she pressed her lips together. He wouldn’t appreciate her amusement. “I can imagine.” She’d seen how Barron and Stella had argued about every detail while planning Ethan and Kerri’s wedding.

“So I drove over here to make your mother happy, but it’s high time I go back to make sure she hasn’t killed herself with her stubborn refusal to see a doctor. Miles is no match for her.” He harrumphed. “Thankfully, Claude is there too.”

  “Claude?”

“Claude Aylster—a friend of mine. He came over to chat.”

Interesting. She’d had no idea they were close.

“Anyway, I’ve got to get going,” Barron said. “I don’t want to leave your mother for long, given her condition.”

Bemused, she watched him drive away and turned her attention to her son. “I guess it’s just you and me.”

“I guess so. But that’s okay. Look at all this candy!” Eric hefted his trash bag. “I got it all.”

She raised an eyebrow. This year’s bounty was at least double last year’s. “Did any of that come from Barron?’

“Yeah, some. He said he bought too much.”

“Ah-ha.” She shook her head. She needed to have a firm talk with that old billionaire. For a man with such a horrible, curmudgeonly reputation, he did a lot of unexpectedly nice things.

They went inside together, and Eric stopped at the dining table. “Are these from your boyfriend?” he said, gesturing at the roses.

She almost stumbled. “Boyfriend? Why would you think that?”

“Zack has a girlfriend, and he had to give her candies and flowers on Halloween. He said she asked for them.”

“A girlfriend? Zack is eleven.” The fact didn’t seem to make an impression on Eric. “Well…yes, they’re from a man. But it’s sort of complicated.”

“Why? Don’t you like getting presents?” Eric asked. “He likes you a lot, right? Zack does. Like Hailey, I mean. Otherwise he wouldn’t have bought her things. He’s sort of cheap.”

She let out a startled laugh. “Well, don’t worry. The man who sent these is definitely not cheap.”

“Good. Aunt Kerri said cheap men are the worst. She said I should avoid getting that reputation.”

“Oh my god.” Meredith covered her mouth, then chuckled. “What else did she tell you?”

“That I can’t appear weak. You know, like a pushover. She said I have to be firm without being cheap. But not…” Eric frowned, trying to recall the word. “Overbearing. It was sort of confusing.”

“I can imagine.” She shook her head. It was just like Kerri to give her son advice like that. She was too practical-minded to let an opportunity slip. “And was your Uncle Ethan around for this conversation?”

“Yeah, but he didn’t really say anything. Just laughed a lot.”

She gave Eric a tight hug. She couldn’t believe they were having this conversation. It felt like it
d just been the day before when she’d been changing his diapers.

“I’m going to make some pancakes. Wanna help?” she asked.

  “Sure.”

“Okay.” She went to the kitchen and pulled out the ingredients. As they mixed the batter, she said, “Eric, I want you to know that I…sort of do have a boyfriend.”

  “Oh. Is he nice?”

“Yes, he’s pretty nice.” A total understatement.

  “Do you like him?”

“Well, of course I do, silly. Otherwise he wouldn’t be my boyfriend. We’ve known each other for a long time.”

“So how come you’re his girlfriend just now?”

“Well…he was busy and I was busy. Plus he lived in Europe for a while.” She cleared her throat. “You’ve already met him.”

  “I have?”

  “Mm-hmm.”

  “You mean…Daniel?”

“Yep.” She watched for a reaction out of the corner of her eye as she got the griddle ready.

Eric mulled it over. “He’s pretty cool.”

  “You think so?”

“Yeah.” Eric frowned. “Not like the guy at the park.”

She turned to face him. “What guy at the park? When?”

“Wednesday, maybe? He was an adult.”

  “What did he want?”

“Nothing. He was sort of hanging out near the soccer field where we were all practicing drills and stuff.”

Meredith nodded. Eric liked to play soccer with his friends, and she encouraged that since it was a good way to bond. She poured some batter on the griddle, forming six perfect circles.

“When the ball went out of bounds close to him, he kicked it back to us. I said thanks, and he said no problem, then later he wanted to talk to us. He said he used to be a scout for some soccer league in Europe.”

A sliver of apprehension slid through her heart. “And what happened?”

“He asked us things like how long we’ve been playing, who coached us and stuff. Then Zack said his dad taught him, and the guy asked if my dad taught me too.”

“Aww.” Meredith’s chest got the funny ache it always did whenever Eric’s father came up. She fought an urge to put her arm around his shoulder, knowing that at this age he’d just shrug it off.
