With the gloves still on her hands, she put on her favorite gray sweatshirt and her worn sneakers and snuck out the house, listening to the peaceful breathing of her sleeping family and clutching the three envelopes in her hand. She stopped at the corner of the street beside a red Royal Mail mailbox. “The time for playing God is over,” she said and slipped the three envelopes through the slot. The disposable gloves were thrown into a nearby trashcan. She looked at it closely. “It pays sometimes to be paranoid.” She remembered Rotem saying something like that once.
And sometimes it doesn’t, she thought to herself, and trailed the tip of her finger along the rim of the gray circular trashcan that was covered in drops of cold water and stared down for a moment at the LOOK RIGHT → sign on the zebra crossing at her feet.
She started to run.
