He nodded. “I never would have married you if I didn’t love you. I don’t think I realized it at the time, but I do now.” He moved closer to her on the couch and pulled her into his arms. “And I hated not sleeping with you last night.”
She sighed. “I love you too. I’m sorry we fought.”
“So am I.” He kissed her softly. “I’m glad we’re having a baby. I hope he has your eyes.”
“I hope she has your hair.”
He laughed, shaking his head. “Feeling any extra need for tacos?”
“No, but I am craving kolaches. I think we’re going to have to make sure we have some in the house at all times.”
“You would crave something that I don’t make.”
She shrugged. “I can’t make life easy for you!” She rested her head on his shoulder for a moment. “Do you want to go to my midwife’s appointment with me? I’ll see her for the first time on Monday.”
“If I make it through the weekend with May and Valerie trying out the taco burger, then I definitely want to be at the midwife with you!”
Megan sighed. “Now I can call my mom and tell her. Do you realize I didn’t tell anyone about the baby but you? And you…well, you know how you reacted.”
“We’ll call both our parents this evening. And yes, I’m going to be at every appointment!”
“You’d better be.” Megan stood up. “It’s kolache time!”
“Just so you’re not trying to force me to make a kolache burger, we’ll be just fine!”
Epilogue
Megan and Bob sat together at the desk across from Samantha Ross, midwife and kid sister to Culpepper’s only doctor, Tabitha Ross. “So? Will you accept us as your patients?”
“Absolutely!” Samantha replied. “You seem to be in perfect health, Megan. If there are any problems in the future, I’ll have to transfer your care, but everything looks good at this point.”
“Oh, good. I want the more personalized care of a midwife. I’ve read about the differences between the two practitioners. I’d really like a water birth.”
Bob was feeling more and more nervous about the whole thing. Why couldn’t she just have the baby in a hospital like a normal woman? “Water birth? What happens if she needs a c-section?”
“We get her to the hospital, and she has one. Not a big deal. Most women can give birth naturally if they’re already in good health when they become pregnant.” Samantha looked up from the paper in front of her and smiled. “Don’t worry, Bob, we’ll take good care of your wife and baby, and you’ll be educated as well. By the time I’m done with you, you’ll feel like you can deliver the baby yourself.”
Bob shuddered. “How about you deliver the baby, and I make you taco burgers to munch on while you do?”
“Taco burgers?” Samantha asked. “Do you have any idea how many of my patients would kill for taco burgers?”
“I do. I really do.” Bob shook his head, remembering Valerie and May’s reaction to the taco burgers on Saturday. May had said she’d be more likely to call him King Bob than she would her own husband, making Valerie laugh.
Samantha laughed softly. “Let’s make an appointment for you for the first Friday of every month for now.” She quickly wrote on a card and handed it to Megan. “I’ll see you in four weeks.”
As they left, Megan smiled at Bob. “I can’t wait until we can hold her in our arms.”
“Me neither. First grandchild on both sides of the family. She’s going to be rotten to the core.” Bob had no idea why they were referring to the baby as ‘she’ but if that’s what Megan wanted, he was going to do it too.
“Too bad she’s not going to be born before her Auntie Erin’s wedding. I can’t believe it’s already next weekend.”
Bob smiled. “Everything’s falling into place, isn’t it? Is this where we live happily ever after?”
Megan shrugged. “I think that only happens in romance novels. This is where we start to worry about strange pains in the middle of the night and spend the next eighteen years barely sleeping for worrying about the baby.”
He sighed. “I’m going to live happily ever after and that’s that.”
She laughed softly. “I love you, Bob.”
“I love you, too.” And they would live happily ever after, even if there were a few bumps in the road along the way.
