One year later…
“I cannot believe that they are one already!” Kelly exclaimed as she leaned back against the chair and watched the four children tumbling after their dad as he went to get the ball he was throwing to them.
“Actually, one year and three months. They turned one the end of June,” Caitlin said with a contented smile as she watched her husband with their children. The gathering was a combination birthday party for Matthias and a housewarming that they never got to have. Caitlin had sent out invitations and had been shocked at the amount of people who turned up for the event. It was a nice September afternoon with hardly a cloud in the beautiful ocean blue of the sky. Chairs dotted the space around the pool and a long trestle table held food of all descriptions. The past year had been one of joy and happiness as she and her husband went away for a few weekends to Europe and Hawaii for their anniversary. They had taken the children with them to Paris and the UK two months ago. Whereas before Matthias had been cool and unapproachable, he was an entirely different person now. He spent most of his time with them and even if he had to go away for a couple of days, he made sure to keep in touch.
“You look happy,” Kelly murmured to her friend.
“I have stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop,” Caitlin admitted, sitting up straight as her daughter took a tumble in the soft grass. She laughed and shook her head as her husband caught her in his arms and looked over at her as if to say that she had nothing to worry about.
“You should.” Kelly looked over where her husband was sprawled on a towel on the thick carpet-like grass with their two sons and smiled. “We are allowed to be happy.”
Several of the other wives were there with their children and a live band was playing on a raised dais at the far end of the fencing. Caitlin’s father had abandoned his post at the trestle table and joined Matthias, taking the hands of two of his grandsons, taking them over to a chair to sit with them. Yvonne and Valerie were also there as well as Steve who was now engaged to Eve. The year had been an eventful one for the publishing house, where they had gotten several awards for their contribution to the publishing world. Caitlin went in everyday but came home before six to spend time with the children. Nurse Jacobs had left a month ago on another assignment but kept in touch with them.
Matthias hefted his daughter to one side and Michael to the other as he walked over to where Kane was seated, his two boys having abandoned him to go over to where their mother was sitting with Caitlin, Kelly, and Leesa.
“I hereby give you permission to ride Uncle Kane like a horsey,” Matthias told his son as Kane reached for him. “You, my darling princess, get to sit and eat that popsicle and try not to mess up that pretty blouse or Mommy will have my head.”
“Popsicle,” the adorable little girl said as she reached for it. Mathias dug out a bib from the pocket of his denim jeans and put it around her neck. Catherine was a mini version of her mother, with a head of curly black hair, dark brown eyes, and her mother’s slightly flared nostrils. Matthias adored her and thought she was the most beautiful little girl in the world! She had overcome her illness and health problems that she had been born with and was now as tall and a strong as her brothers.
“You seem to have this father thing down pat,” Kane said in amusement as he lifted a knee and placed Michael on so that the boy could jump up and down to his heart’s content.
“Months of practice.” Matthias brushed his hand over his daughter’s curls. “I never thought it possible to be so happy.”
Kane smiled as he looked over to where his wife was having a conversation with their two sons. “Until I met Kelly, I never knew that something like this existed. The rush of emotions and passion that lasts through the years no matter what we go through. I am married to a strong, opinionated woman who knows exactly want she wants and even though we argue bitterly sometimes, we never end the day never making up. She takes my breath away.”
“I know exactly what you mean,” Matthias said quietly as he looked at his own wife.

The boys were still on high from the excitement of the day and refused to go to bed that night. Matthias, who was always patient with them, dismissed the nannies and read them another story even though it was now after nine. “More, Daddy!” Matthew demanded.
“More!” More!” Michael and Michael parroted as they sat up against their pillows, their dark eyes so like their dad’s far from sleepy.
“What’s the magic word?” their father asked them mildly, already reaching for another book to read to them.
“Please!” they all shouted.
“You are going to have your mother coming in here to have my head in a minute.”
“She is already here,” Caitlin said from the doorway. “It’s bedtime, boys.”
“Please, Mommy,” Matthew pleaded, his dark eyes going to her. They looked so much like Matthias that her heart quickened its beat just looking at them.
“Just one more and that’s it. Mommy and Daddy need to get some sleep.” She came over and kissed each of them, stopping at Matthias to rest a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t be long, darling,” she murmured into his ear, her breath sending desire shooting through his body.
“Okay, guys, this is going to be a very short story.”
She was waiting for him on the bed, totally and wonderfully naked. They worked out together at nights and sometimes in the morning and she had gotten her figure back. “Are they asleep?” she asked him softly as he hurriedly took off his clothes and came to join her on the bed.
“Except Michael.” He bent to place kisses along the curve of her cheek, his hand cupping her breast. “He wanted me to tell him another story, promising that he would not tell on you.”
She laughed softly at that, the laughter ending in a moan as his hand went between her legs. It did not take long for her to forget her train of thought as he took her to unparallel heights of ecstasy!
