Rebecca watched as Alex freed the ring from the box and gripped it between his fingers. She pressed her hand to her mouth and prayed that if this was a dream, she would never wake up. Alex held out his hand, palm up and waited. Her hand was shaking as she laid it on his.

“Rebecca, I have committed myself to doing what I could to make our marriage work now. Spending this past week with you has reinforced my feelings for you, how very much I love you.”

“I love you too,” Rebecca said, her words barely a whisper as she tried to speak through the tightness in her throat. Tears blurred Alex’s face for a moment, but she blinked them rapidly away.

“I know legally we’re already married, but I need to ask the woman you are today if you will marry the man I’ve become.”

“Yes.” Rebecca wrapped her fingers around his hand, holding tight to his strength. “Yes, I will marry you.”

Rebecca’s gaze dropped to their hands as Alex slid the sparkling ring onto the ring finger of her left hand. He lifted their hands and pressed a kiss to the back of hers then he reached out to lay his other hand on her cheek. He leaned toward her as Rebecca laid her hand on top of his, pressing it tightly to her face. As the distance close between them and their lips touched for the first time in fifteen years, Rebecca couldn’t stop her tears.

  She had missed this man.

The lost years still filled her with regret, but Rebecca planned to make the most out of each day they had together from this moment on.

  ~*~*~

Alex stood at the large window that faced the frozen lake and watch snowflakes drift down from the sky. The moon reflected off the snow covered ground making the night surprisingly light. It was hard to believe that he was there on his honeymoon with Rebecca. He glanced over his shoulder to the large bed where she lay sleeping.

After asking her to marry him again on the anniversary of their previous wedding, they decided together that they wanted to have a renewal of their vows in front of their family and friends. So on the first day of the New Year, those who loved and cared about them gathered at Alex’s church for their service. Rebecca’s best friend, Maureen had come with her family which had thrilled Jordan since it meant his best friend was there too.

Though Rebecca had phoned to let her parents know about the wedding, they hadn’t been able to attend because of the short notice. Alex knew it had disappointed Rebecca, but at least, Connor had been there for her and had walked her down the aisle with Jordan. After fifteen years, they had finally gotten their church wedding.

It should have been a hassle trying to put together a wedding in just over a week, but they’d agreed that the trappings of the wedding were less important than the vows they would be renewing. There hadn’t been any fancy decorations. The invitations had gone out in emails. Maureen had stood up with Rebecca, and Marcus had stood up with him. His pastor had been happy to perform the ceremony. Money and family who were eager to give them a hand had helped to pull it all together. All Alex cared about was saying the words that would bring them together again as a married couple.

After the wedding, they’d had a dinner with those closest to them and then they’d left to come to this cabin on the lake. For the next week, it was going to be just the two of them. Jordan was flying back to Chicago with Connor and Robby’s family. And when their week-long honeymoon was up, they were going to join them there to pack up Rebecca and Jordan’s home. Plans were underway for Rebecca, Jordan, and Connor to move back to the Twin Cities.

Alex would be glad when everything was settled. Even the house was undergoing some renovations while they were gone. They were building a new bedroom and bathroom in the basement for Jordan. Rebecca would move in with Alex and Connor would take over the apartment. There were a lot of changes going on, but Alex was looking forward to every one.

He heard movement behind him and turned to see Rebecca sitting up. Rather than have her leave the warmth of the bed, Alex joined her. Once under the covers, he drew her close and she tucked her head in the crook of his neck.

“What were you thinking about?” she asked as her hand settled over his heart.

Alex covered her hand with one of his, holding it closely. “I was just thinking about all the changes that have come about in my life in the last little while. And how very grateful I am for each and every one.”

“You think you’re ready for me and Jordan to take your life by storm?”

Alex chuckled and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “You’ve already taken my life by storm, babe, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” They lay in silence for a few minutes, and Alex’s thoughts continued to wander. “I’m so very grateful that you were strong enough to walk away from what I asked you to do. Looking at Jordan used to fill me with guilt, but now I look at him and see proof of a life that was meant to be. We may have struggled at the start, but he’s proof of our love then and now.”

“Yes, he is.” Rebecca lifted her hand and slid it along the back of his head, drawing him down so their lips could touch. She gave him several light kisses. “And I do love you very much.”

Before he could respond, their kiss deepened and Alex decided to show her how much he loved her instead. As he pulled her close, he whispered a prayer of thanks that God had brought them together again and that against all odds, a spark of love had endured and now flourished between them.
