  The Marines guarding the medical bay knew him well. They saluted and opened the door for him, even though they were the same rank.

  “Are the twins here tonight?”

  “Yes, sir.”

  “Thanks.”

  He found Ace and Amanda curled up in chairs they’d pulled next to Arthur’s bed.

  “How is he?” Kevin asked.

  “He laughs in his sleep,” Amanda said, slightly annoyed. “Just like back home. Sometimes he talks about Ruby.”

  “She’s on the Redemption,” Kevin said. “The evacuation was chaotic at the end. We’re still trying to put our company back together.”

  Amanda patted him on the arm. “I’m sure that’s very important and interesting. If you’re staying, can you keep it down? Ace and Arthur both need sleep.”

  “Sure thing, Amanda-Margaret.” Kevin watched his siblings for a long time, thinking that he would drift off in the uncomfortable hospital chair, but he never did. He wasn’t sleepy. The moment felt magical. They hadn’t all been in the same place for years.
