When I got to Bethel Manor my mother was just getting home from a church event. I pulled up in front of the house and started bringing my suit cases inside the house. My mother asked me what the problem was, but I wasn’t prepared to discuss it with her at that point. I told her that things had changed dramatically since I found out about Tammy being pregnant with twins. My mother ended the conversation by telling me to leave it all in the Lord’s hands. I went up to my old room and fell asleep to try to escape the madness that was going on in my life.
When I woke up it was late, but my cell was going off. It was Isaac and he wanted me to meet him at his place in Four Seasons. It didn’t take me long to get dressed and make it to Isaac’s place. Once I sat down inside, he started telling me about the info that he had found out. Apparently, Frank and Terry were planning the big heroin deal the next day in Norfolk. Isaac still didn’t know who the connect was, but I had a real good idea that Trey was supplying them now. I told Isaac that I’d have to go get my guns from the Sonata and get the Ruger that I’d left with Tammy. I could tell that the talk of gunplay scared Isaac, so I stopped talking about what I planned to do. I thanked him and told him to prepare to expand his heroin business in Newport News very soon.
I left Four Seasons and went straight to Derby Run so I could get the guns that I’d left in the Sonata and in the house. I should have known that Tammy wouldn’t be there after the shit I’d seen earlier. The Sonata was gone, so I went inside and got the Ruger from Tammy’s closet. I thought about setting all Tammy’s shit on fire, but I decided against it. I had two extra clips for the Ruger, so it could definitely get the job done. Now all I needed was to get more sleep so I could handle my business.
Isaac had told me the exact place and time of the meeting the next day in Norfolk, so I’d have to be on the other side of the water by noon. The deal was going down at 1 pm near Tidewater Drive, and I knew the area well. There were a lot of abandoned houses in that area, so I could hide out easily. I left Derby Run and went back to my parent’s house to get some sleep.
After tossing and turning for most of the night, the morning finally arrived. My mother had prepared a big breakfast with grits, eggs, sausage, toast, pancakes, and orange juice. It was just what I needed to prepare me for my day. I noticed that I had missed calls on my cell from Tammy and Isaac that had come in last night after 2 am. I had too much on my mind to fuss with Tammy, and Isaac would have to wait also.
I told Andre that he could drive the BMW today and I was gonna keep the Sentra. I knew that the BMW would draw too much attention in the area of Norfolk that I was going to, but no one would think anything about a Sentra parked on the side of the street. At 10 am, I started making sure the Ruger was clean and ready to go and I made sure each clip was fully loaded. I was hoping to catch everyone by surprise and not have to use the Ruger at all, but in situations like this, you never know.
Instead of waiting until noon, I left Bethel Manor at 11 am and headed towards Norfolk in the Sentra. Just before I reached the Hampton Roads bridge tunnel, Isaac called me and told me to come see him before I did anything crazy. He sounded like a female the way he was begging me to rethink what I planned to do. Little did he know, I was already in route to set up my plan. Isaac was in the middle of a sentence when the call cut off because I was inside the tunnel. He was telling me that he’d handled something, but he never got to finish the sentence. It was too late for talking; I was in the action stage.
It didn’t take me long to pick the only spot that Frank and Terry would be able to meet anyone in that area. It was a small parking lot on the backside of an old abandoned commercial building. I parked a block away from the building by some other cars that were nearby. I loaded the Ruger and made sure I had the two extra clips before I went to hide out in the abandoned building. There was no price to put on getting played like a puppet, but no matter how big the deal would be, I knew it would make up for the $500,000 that Tammy and her brothers had taken from me.
About an hour after I set up in the building, a black Volvo with New York plates pulled into the parking lot. The windows were tinted, so I couldn’t tell who or how many people were inside. After they pulled in, it seemed like nothing moved for the next thirty minutes. I was on the second floor of the building looking down when I saw two guys creeping around the right side of the parking lot by some bushes. It was Frank and Terry clear as day, and both of them had pistols in their hands. There was no way that anyone in the Volvo could see them until they were right up on the car. Right before Frank and Terry got to the cement, all four windows of the Volvo came down. Smoke escaped from every window; it was enough to scare Frank and Terry back behind the bushes.
You could hear coughing coming from the front seat of the Volvo. Once the smoke cleared, I couldn’t believe who I saw. It was Maurice and Tony, the infamous twins from Brooklyn. Trey had sent his brother’s to do the deal and they were smoking weed, thinking shit was sweet in VA. Frank and Terry had other plans, and it would make my plan even easier.
I watched as Frank and Terry inched towards the Volvo, one going to each side. Before the twins knew what was going on, it was too late. The shots rang off before they had time to blink. It was a miracle that Frank and Terry didn’t shoot each other, because one was on the driver’s side and the other was on the passenger’s side shooting. There were only about four shots total, then things were silent.
I watched as Terry opened the passenger side door of the Volvo, popped open the glove compartment, and hit the trunk button. Frank opened the driver’s side door and reclined the seat back and Terry did the same thing on the passenger’s side before he closed the door. Once both doors were closed, Frank and Terry reached in and grabbed one of each of the dead brothers’ legs and hung it out the window. It was definitely a sight to see. From where I was, it looked like two people were chilling in a car enjoying the day. Once Frank and Terry got to the trunk, I saw them pull out the big duffel bag.
It was too late to turn back; I was going to handle my business. I knew that Frank and Terry had to walk right beside the building I was in so they could get to where ever they’d parked. I had mapped out the building earlier, so I knew there was a big window on the side of the building that I could walk out of like a door. As soon as they closed the trunk of the Volvo, I made my way downstairs to the side of the building that Frank and Terry had to walk past. Before I hit the bottom floor, I heard a noise, but I wasn’t sure what it was. As I got closer to the window, I could hear clearly; it was the police. The only thing I heard was “freeze!” and then the shooting started. All I could do was find a corner in the building and curl up. It seemed like the shooting lasted forever. I didn’t move for hours from the spot I was at.
It was dark outside before I moved at all from where I was. My cell phone was in the car, so I couldn’t call anyone. When I looked out the window, all I saw was yellow crime scene tape everywhere. I made my way out the other side of the building and ran until I got to the Sentra. I couldn’t believe what had taken place.
When I pulled out my phone, I saw that I had missed calls from Andre, Tammy and an unknown Richmond number; but no calls from Isaac. The first person I called was Andre. He was going crazy trying to find out where I was and what was going on. He said that Tammy had come to the house and she didn’t look too good. He said that I needed to get home immediately. The last thing he said before we got off the phone was that Isaac had called and told him that he was sorry and hung up the phone. I attempted to call Isaac’s phone but I got the out of service signal. Something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
I called the Richmond number and it was a number to MCV, the hospital that Rodney was at. I didn’t know what room he was in, so I called Carla. She picked up the phone crying. She told me that Rodney had come out of his coma earlier today and he wanted to talk to only me. Since they couldn’t get in touch with me, he’d talked to Carla. She told me that Rodney had told her exactly what happened the night o
f the shooting. I told her not to speak to the police and that I’d be up to Richmond soon. She said that she was going home in the morning because Rodney was in surgery again for internal bleeding. We agreed to meet tomorrow in Hampton at Signature Place. I headed back to Bethel Manor from Norfolk not knowing what the future held for me now.

When I pulled up to my parent’s house, I saw my Sonata parked in front of the house. I started to pull off and come back later, but then decided to go in.
My parent’s and Andre were downstairs when I walked in and they all told me to please go talk to Tammy. She was in my room with the door closed and I slowly opened the door. She looked like she’d been awake for a few days straight. Her hair wasn’t done and she was crying uncontrollably as she clutched one of her big Gucci purses. When I came in the room, the crying stopped. She asked me how long I’d known she was with Terry, but I didn’t answer. She went on to tell me about her twin brother’s being killed and then Frank and Terry being killed in a shootout with the police. Little did she know, I’d had a front row seat to most of it.
I had no more feelings for Tammy or her family, so I was looking out of my bedroom window not interested in what she was saying. When I did finally turn around, Tammy was gripping the Desert Eagle that I’d left under the seat in the Sonata. The door to my room was now locked and the tears were flowing down her face again. The only words she said were, “It’s the only way.” Tammy quickly put the barrel of the Desert Eagle in her mouth and pulled the trigger. I had been through a lot in my short lifetime, but nothing at all could have prepared me for what I’d just witnessed. Every wall in my room was covered with pink, red and green brain material and blood after she pulled the trigger.
My mind told my body to move, but I was stuck in a trance. I saw my parent’s and my brother force the door to my room open, but I couldn’t move. Everything was moving in slow motion and there was no noise at all. Eventually the whole place went black. When I woke up, I was at Riverside hospital again with an IV in my arm.
My mother was sitting on the hospital bed with me, bible in hand. Andre was sitting in a chair by the window and Carla was seated next to my bed. Everyone that was in my hospital room had something important to talk to me about. Two days had passed since Tammy had taken her life and I’d blacked out. The doctors said it was traumatic shock that caused me to black out, so I would have to be monitored for the next week to make sure my brain was still functioning properly.
My mother decided to let Carla have some time with me while she and Andre stepped out of the room. After my mother and Andre were out of the room, Carla came and sat beside me on the bed. I could tell that she had been crying, but she was still a beautiful girl. She started off by telling me that Rodney had come out of surgery and was in stable condition. He’d probably be out of the hospital in two weeks, from what she’d heard.
The news that she hesitated to tell me was that Rodney was confined to a wheel chair and may never walk again. Evidently, one of the bullets had struck the middle of his spine and he had no feeling in his lower extremities. I was crushed when she told me that. I felt responsible for the drama and pain that had gone on around me. She said that the police had questioned Rodney for several hours but hadn’t pressed any charges against him. That’s when she told me what happened the night of the shooting at the condo in Henrico.
Apparently, Tyrone had used his key and came into the condo in the morning. He’d hid by the kitchen while Ebony came and knocked on the door. They weren’t expecting Rodney to know that the girl who came to the condo was Ebony and that her and Tyrone were up to no good. Rodney looked out of the upstairs window, saw Ebony and headed downstairs to the door with the loaded 40 caliber in hand. Right after he unlocked the door to open it, Tyrone jumped out with a 9 mm in hand and shot Rodney in the side of the leg.
While Rodney was falling down, he started shooting at Tyrone. He ended up shooting Tyrone in the chest, neck and head but not before Tyrone shot him in the back and the stomach. Ebony pushed the front door open and Rodney shot her once in the head and she fell back out of the front door. The police were talking about charging Rodney with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon but didn’t have enough info about the shooting to charge him with the homicides. The owner pinpointed Tyrone as the person renting the condo, so everything found in the house was considered Tyrone’s.
I told Carla how sorry I was, and she just sat there for a while in a daze. She finally told me to get better and that she’d stay in touch. When Carla left, Andre came in with a serious look that I hadn’t seen in awhile on his face. He ran everything down to me that happened since I blacked out.
First of all, Isaac had been MIA for the last two days. Not even his parent’s could contact him. Andre did learn that Isaac had tipped the police off about Frank and Terry’s big deal going down and he had also told Tammy that I knew she was seeing Terry. Then Andre told me that the police had found a suicide note that Tammy left at Derby Run when they raided the place. Phone records from Maurice and Tony’s cell phones were matched to the same number on Terry’s cell and that number happened to be my home phone at Derby Run. Nothing was found, other than the note; but the police did want me to be interviewed in the near future. Tammy’s body was airlifted to a Norfolk hospital that had one of the best neonatal care units in the country, in a frantic attempt to save the twins. The babies were delivered by c-section 27 weeks early and weighed 1 1⁄2 pounds each. Both babies were still in critical condition and were being kept alive using every tool available.
The doctor’s said that they were able to deliver the babies because Tammy’s heart didn’t stop once she shot herself through the mouth so blood continually flowed to the twins. I was listening to my brother, but I couldn’t believe the stuff I was hearing. My brother Cory and sista Angie were on their way back to VA. I looked at Andre and tears started to stream down my cheeks. I asked him if he thought the benefits of the drug life outweighed all the consequences that he saw happening in my life, and all he could do was put his head down and say, “No.” I ended our conversation by telling him not to be dumb like me but strive to be a role model to those that feel like the streets are their only hope. We hugged and he went out so my mother could come in. My mother came in with her bible, looking just as peaceful as always. She sat beside me and started talking. She told me that no one could help me out of my situation but the Lord.
I sat for about twenty minutes and listened to my mother explain why now was the right time to turn my entire life over to the Lord. She told me that one day the Lord would use my life as an example to those that were going through or had gone through similar situations like mine. Once she saw me starting to nod off a little, she kissed my forehead and said that she’d continue to pray for all her children until they found their way to the Lord. I was impressed by my mother’s strength in bad situations and I hoped that I’d one day be as strong as she was. I went to sleep and dreamed that I lived in a peaceful world with no problems. If only I could have stayed in the dream, I wouldn’t have to face the cold reality of the life I had chosen.

Did you love True Consequences? Then you should read Con Test by Rahiem Brooks!
Con Test is a mystery-suspense novel but the mystery and suspense come more from the unravelling of the secrets of Justice's past, and William's past, than from the unravelling of many crimes. In the course of this unravelling Justice will make some startling discoveries but by the time he does this he has other problems to worry about. His criminal past is also about to catch up to
him. Now the challenge is not just to escape the chains of the past but also to stay out of prison.
Apart from being a kind of sexual mystery it is also a novel about identity, or rather different layers of identity. Justice has other reasons for his constant re-invention of himself besides its usefulness to him as a criminal. He needs masks to hide behind and perhaps in some ways this is more important to him even than thieving and killing. The lies we tell ourselves, the lies we tell others, the lies that we live, these are all issues addressed in this novel. The truth exists, but do we really want the truth?
