Floating City

Page 28

by Sudhir Venkatesh

After my work with the UJC was completed, I began gathering material for a documentary film. I also launched a formal study of the middle-and upper-class segments of New York’s sex trade, which ended in 2009; material from that study is currently being prepared for academic publication.

This book is a memoir of these experiences. As such, the bulk of this book is not appropriate for mainstream academic social science publications. Only the formal research findings have appeared in academic publications. Some parts of the book are based on field notes, others on personal diaries and journals, and the rest is based on memory.

In an effort to conceal the identities of some people and organizations, for the sake of protecting their privacy in some cases and to maintain academic protocol in others, I have adopted pseudonyms—although all the people and organizations portrayed are real, and no composites have been created. I have also altered dates to ensure that the incidents reported could not be traced back to the actual persons who were involved.
