With the last word leaving his mouth Chief Cornu Mag struck out with his spear only to find empty air. Activating first Dominion of Chaos and then Chaotic Subterfuge followed by Disparaging Chaos Dante reduced the life of the chief quicker than the inhuman eyes could see. With only a few points remaining he fell to the ground where Dante reached down and offered him a friendly hand nodding to Laurina to let her know it was ok to heal the chief.
While the chief looked at him with astonishment and horror Dante spoke clearly and loudly for all to hear “I have won this battle, and as I said I do not wish to shed blood. As the life of your chief and through him the lives of his people now lay in my hands I only ask one thing.” He paused for a moment to let his words sink in “I ask that you go in peace and live in peace. Do not make war with the Vulpus Clan. Live side by side with them.” Turning on his Legend of the Legendary Beast Slayer title which caused all the Ibis clans people to gasp he finished by saying “I have slain many of the legendary beasts and this includes Regem Ligno. It was not a God merely a powerful creature. I feel that it meant well for not only your people but the people of the Vulpus Clan. Know that should I get word that you warred with their clan I will return and I will wipe out both clans. You have seen my power and you know the power Regem Ligno held. Do not test my words unless you wish to cause death for all of your people.”
Letting go of the chief and turning off the title that floated above his head Dante waved the rest of his group to follow him. Owl people scattered rushing out of their way as the party made their way back into the forest and towards their goal. For the remainder of their time in the forest they were not observed or followed. They were in the forest for two more days before they came to an old overgrown road with a sign pointing South West saying ‘Lumin Silva- Capital city of the elves’ posted in fading letters.
The five of them breathed easier now that they were out in the open and Parvulus continued his barrage of questions about the world beyond the elven forest and what to expect in the elven cities. As with Erchik Dante noticed Parvulus’s speech and thinking improve to something more akin to that of the more modern aspects of this world. Over the days of travel his questions and conversations grew deeper and more thoughtful. Only one thing bothered Dante as he thought about it more and more and that was that the party system still seemed to see him as a mob of this world instead of as a party member. His stats were not like the rest of theirs. Not even Erchik had health like what Parvulus had. It seemed odd and he suspected the laws of the words would right it eventually but he didn’t plan on banking on it anytime soon.
Rounding the corner of the overgrown canyon they could see the towers of the elven city only miles away. Traveling for days on end left the group thoroughly tired and they were more than ready to relax and take a break in the large luxurious house Dante told them about. They were discussing Elven cuisine when they approached the closed gates guarded by a platoon of elven soldiers.
“Halt,” came the order from the man leading the group “State your business here!”
Dante being the only one seemingly of elven decent and knowing the lore took the lead “I have come to take residence in my home located on Birch Way number four.”
“That is an Adventurers housing area!” Shouted the man “You could not possibly have a home there.” Signaling the platoon to take a battle ready stance.
Terrance shook his head and said under his breath “People of our world should really learn to just listen to Dante and get out of the way sometimes.”
Offering a friendly smile and raising his voice Dante laughed “That would be correct. Those are housing coordinates for Adventurers and,” turning on a plethora of titles displaying something only an Adventurer could display he continued “and I would really like to go home and put my feet up already. My friends and I are tired. We don’t feel like fighting, not that we won’t fight if need be it’s just that I really don’t feel like it.” His words dripping with threat as he spoke.
As a whole the platoon stepped back in shock before the general spoke again “That being the case I do not see why we should not let you into the city if for no other reason than to spare unnecessary bloodshed.” Waving at the men atop the gate to open the doors he spoke further “I would suggest you see the Royal Majesties before retiring to your home Adventurer.”
Dante waved him off “Tell them I owe em a visit once I have cleaned up and rested. In the meantime please make sure no one disturbs us.” Marching past the platoon as if he were strolling through a park leisurely.
As he’d promised the first thing he did upon entering the house was race up stairs to his storage container and fish out the maid’s contracts. Pulling up the interface for the house and moving some things around first he made sure that everyone would be comfortable and placed the maid’s contracts into the activation slot. He was greeted by thanks and welcome by the maids who quickly went to work clearing out the dust and retrieving foodstuffs from the storage to prepare a large meal for everyone.
They were aloud a few days to relax in the luxury of the hoe before a royal messenger knocked on the door begging their pardon and inviting the group as a whole to the palace for an evening meal. Though he felt he made his point about who and what he was Dante wanted to make sure to make a good impression. Greeted by a small fanfare and many questions from his royal audience Dante’s group was warmly welcomed that night and he did his best to tell their tale up to their current point. Leaving out sensitive or otherwise private information.
Everyone welcomed the group and he had a few visitors over the next few days from the native people of the elven city but they were good about not overstaying their welcome in his home or pushing too hard for details on what seemed sore or uncomfortable subjects.
It was one of the nights a while later after he had visited with the royal court that he sat upstairs in his study and went over books and maps that he heard a knock on his study door. He’d expected one of the party members to be there when he opened the door but instead found a tall dark haired elf. Not wanting to be rude he welcomed her in though with the caveat that he would only have a brief visit with her.
“Quite the adventure you’ve had young man.” She said with a slight giggle that reminded him of wind chimes.
Nodding while he took a seat and looked down at one of the books he asked “What can I do for you? I suspect one of the maids let you in and that it must be rather important to visit so late.”
She didn’t answer until he looked up at her. When their eyes locked the room around him seemed to fade to darkness and only he and her were there floating in the empty void. “Yes, I would say I have something important to discuss with you.” Her voice range through his being now more shrill and almost mad sounding. The visage of the elf was gone and in its place was a lady garbed in the night sky with pale moonlight skin. “I snatched you away for a task and you lounge about boy!” She said angrily causing him to cover his ears.
“Who are you?!” He shouted back unable to take his eyes off of her.
“The Goddess Malum, and it is by my hand that your path has deviated to these ends. Now that said you have done well until now.” She seemed to be looking around before turning back to him. “I believe the saying is ‘while cats away the mice will play’ or something along those lines” Cackling with a sound less like chimes and more akin the shattering of crystal.
Trying his best to stare her down and stand his ground while floating through the void Dante asked “What do you want from me?”
“Want,” she laughed maniacally “I want you to finish what you started! I’ve waited long enough and while I have you alone I think I would like to show you the true power of the Gods.”
Malum’s hands twisted and before Dante’s eyes he saw his friends be ripped to shreds “I can take them away on a whim child, do not forget this.” Then with a wave of her hands the image disappeared leaving only Dante and Malum alone again in the void.
Angry power raged thr
ough Dante as he called upon his full power over chaos an lashed out at her shouting “You will never hurt the people I care about!”
Covering her mouth feigning a yawn as she swapped away his attack Malum spoke again “Giving you the power of chaos was my idea child. Tarrok was fool enough to fall for it. You don’t yet hold the power to kill a God so calm yourself before you say or do something you regret.”
Seeing that even unleashing the full extent of his power would not affect her Dante slumped down and said quietly “Then what do you need of me?”
“I need you to be more powerful, I need you to finish your tasks and kill the rest of the legendary beasts. Then I need you to kill the Gods.” Malum shouted emphasizing every word. Then as she finished she thrusts her hands at Dante and he was engulfed in black and purple flames which caused him to writhe in agony.
When she was done his hands and feet still exuded the purple and black flames but he was no longer in pain. Falling forward the last thing he heard was “I have touched you with my power and increased your own. Like with the adventurers of old you are reborn at level fifty with a new set of skills and otherwise unmatched power. Do not dawdle in the elven lands for any longer. Set out and complete your quest and I might think about letting your friends live for another day.”
Then just as quickly as it had begun it was over and he was laying there in blissful darkness. He knew deep inside that her threat was real, he knew that the time of rest was over. For this one last night he let sleep and exhaustion overtake him as he drifted off to troubled sleep.
