Ian Fleming’s 1962 portrait by Amherst Villiers. ‘The crankshaft designer […] is making me look like a mixture between Nehru and Som
erset Maugham.’
Ian and Ann with their son Caspar who was born in August 1952.
Daniel George, one of the editorial team whom Fleming dubbed the ‘Capians’.
Cape’s main editor, Michael Howard. At first doubtful about the Bond novels he later conceded they were all that kept Jonathan Cape in business.
William Plomer, the South African-born poet who was Fleming’s friend and literary mentor.
A fifteenth-century surgeon’s guide to battle injuries that caught Fleming’s fancy. ‘Do you think we should re-title “Doctor No” “The Wound Man” and use it as a frontispiece?’ he asked Plomer.
Fleming at his Sunday Times desk in 1958.
Fleming and his mother Eve outside the Law Courts during her 1957 battle for the affections of Monty, Marquis of Winchester.
Back at court, this time with Ann in 1963, for the Thunderball dispute – ‘a maddening copyright case which […] is going to be a stupendous nuisance’.
With firearms expert Geoffrey Boothroyd – aka Major Boothroyd, 007’s Armourer – in March 1961.
Raymond Chandler in his heyday. By the time Fleming met him in 1955 alcohol and depression had taken their toll.
Fleming described No.13 Sretlanka Ulitsa in Moscow as the headquarters of SMERSH. But as a fan pointed out (with pictorial evidence), it clearly wasn’t.
Bookshops vied to produce the best Bond window display. This one went the extra mile for Thunderball.
Herman W. Liebert of Yale University was so appalled by the ‘Americanese’ in Thunderball that he supplied a list of corrections. Fleming later asked him to consult on The Spy Who Loved Me.
Fleming loved air travel. Here he strides in style through a nascent Heathrow en route to Jamaica.
Ursula Andress, Sean Connery and Ian Fleming on the set of Dr No.
An aficionado of fast cars, Fleming was among the first people in Britain to own a supercharged Studebaker Avanti.
The desk at Goldeneye in 1964. Fleming had just completed his last 007 adventure, The Man with the Golden Gun.
