Surge Together (Book 3 of the Sheffield Chronicles)

Clearokyt heard the General’s message and strategically flew his craft 300 miles south, leaving Logan and the ground crew on their own. If the Fadothials had figured out what was happening and were now heading this way to stop Logan, it didn’t make sense to have the craft in the same area, creating a bullseye that would lead the Fadothials to Logan.
Logan quickly led the way down the riverbank, searching for a good location to dispose of his necklace.
“Do you think it has to be tossed in the same exact spot that I found it? Logan asked, “Or it doesn’t matter as long as it’s in the same river?”
“Same spot if possible,” President Taylor said.
“We could spend all night and day trying to locate a spot that Logan fished from over twenty years ago, don’t you think Clearokyt would have mentioned it if finding the same spot was so important?” Christina said.
“She’s right,” Logan said, “Let’s walk for another five minutes and if I can’t find it, I’ll call it good and throw the necklace in. The longer we wait, the greater the risk.”
“I say we chase the Fadothial crafts, and try to divert them,” Clyde said to the Zyrgian who was piloting his craft.
The Zyrgian didn’t respond.
“C’mon man, don’t play dumb we can’t just hover here forever and do nothing!” Clyde said.
This prompted the pilot to get on the radio, but he spoke in his native tongue, so Clyde had no clue as to what was being said. The sound of the engine shifting to a more powerful gear kicked in and the pilot flew towards Youngstown.
General Kaplan came on the radio once again, “Let’s fly together in formation, maybe the remaining four Fadothial crafts will chase us, which is a better outcome than them heading to Winthrop too.”
The General’s craft led the way, soaring dangerously low to spark the attention of the Fadothials on the ground before climbing due east.
A beam of light resonated across the sky causing Logan and company to look up. The beam appeared to be far away, but the question was, how far?
“I think the decision has been made for us!” Sierra yelled, “Now is the time to ditch the necklace!”
Logan ducked his head down to pull the necklace from his neck. He looked down at the pendant, gave it a ceremonial kiss, wound up and hurled it like a baseball as far downstream as possible. He held his arms out for the others to come in close. They formed a group hug circle.
If these are my last moments alive, I’m sure glad it’s with Hank, Shelby, the President, and Sierra. Whatever happens from this point on is out of our control. No one can say that we didn’t give it our best effort.
Their group hug was broken up by a shaking feeling none of them had felt before. Scanning the area, their surroundings were shaking too. The sound of trees cracking prompted them to run for cover. The shaking lasted for 45 seconds before it disappeared and things looked normal again aside from a few fallen trees.
A loud boom echoed from a distance. A faint object was rising in the sky. The object reached an unknown altitude before a burst of color was released. The colors formed a message across the sky that read:
‘All clear. Well done Logan’
