Lee swiveled in his chair and gazed out his office window. The day was sunny and bright, a perfect match for his sudden mood change. “Good. We’ve invested far too much time and money in this project to see it fail just because one man lost his nerve.”
“That won’t be a problem here, sir.”
“Glad to hear that. Get started immediately. I want Lupin II up and running ASAP.”
Lee disconnected the call without waiting for an answer and then smiled. All they had lost was some time, and not very much of it at that. Greeley’s assumption that his neural conditioning work would be used for humanitarian purposes had been shortsighted and naïve, and—luckily for the CIA—he had come to that realization much too late.
The military and espionage potential of the Lupin Project was far greater than any humanitarian aspect. And, somewhat ironically, the sudden aggression the wolves had demonstrated so late in the project would represent an added advantage in those arenas, once the egghead researchers figured out how to harness it.
It was hardly the project-killer that pansy Greeley had thought.
Lee nodded, all alone in his office.
Smiled again.
Decided maybe this hadn’t been such a bad week, after all.
