Felt very seedy all day with chill, stayed in.
Friday 1 December
Felt better today, went for along walk with Patterson on the far side of the valley. I enjoyed it more and felt better after it than I have for a long time.
Saturday 2 December
Musketry, 30 yards range all morning, billiards, Leake brought over draughts. Dinner in Havre at Hotel Moderne, Patterson went up to the line, 1st Batt.
Sunday 3 December
Church and RC [parade] went for a long walk in the afternoon.
Monday 4 December
C.T.S. all day, a draft of men from King Edward’s House came to my detail.
Tuesday 5 December
Capt. Orr and Jack Davison arrived also Chamberlain from the 5th Batt. Interior economy, rained most of the day.
Wednesday 6 December
Orr went up to the line to the 2nd Batt.
Thursday 7 December
I was Orderly Officer; Capt. Page arrived from the Royal Berkshire Regt.
Friday 8 December
A large draft was suddenly called for and about 500 men were sent up to the line this evening. I spent practically the whole day censoring letters.
Saturday 9 December
Morgan, Grenville and Adair brought a draft over from England. Jack and I had tea and dinner with them in Havre. Macintosh went up to the line to the 4th Batt.
Sunday 10 December
Extraordinarily good sermon in church by one of the padres. Had tea and dinner in Havre with Jack.
Monday 11 December
Had day off due to a sore heel.
Tuesday 12 December
Interior economy, Bridgeman, Hobbs and Reid went up to the line, I received my orders to join my unit and conduct a draft of K.R.R.s (King’s Rifle Regiment).
Wednesday 13 December
We marched down to Havre and left at 11.30 pm; roads very bad and we were heavily laden; we drew three days rations and iron rations, detrained at Rouen 8 am.
Thursday 14 December
Took the men to a rest camp in Rouen. Had a very good bath and excellent lunch at Officer’s Club; entrained at 2.30 pm, men travelled in ordinary luggage vans, 30 per van.
