Many hours later, after questioning and interviews at the police station, we were released. We went back to Jess’ home and together cleared everything from the room that we had been held in. With the mess gone, the house almost felt normal again.

We headed for the lounge and sat cautiously on the sofa. It was if both of us were afraid to speak first.

  ‘You knew,’ she finally said.

  I nodded.

‘When did you figure it out?’

‘Not long ago at all…I had a vision…it was your eyes, but not you. Then I saw your mother…she was telling your father she was pregnant with two babies.’

  ‘Twins,’ she mused.

  ‘Yes.’

  ‘I never knew.’

  ‘I know you didn’t,’ I replied sadly.

‘I never knew him and yet he hated me. What kind of life have you stepped into with me, Alex? Surely you want to leave here and now?’

‘Jess-the reason I did what I did is because of how I feel about you. I had arranged with Captain Withers to be able to be there to capture him. I knew if I told you; you’d keep me away from danger. I couldn’t have that because if we never faced him, we’d never be free of him.’

  ‘I don’t understand.’

‘He would have kept going and going until he killed one or both of us…we wouldn’t have lived a happy life. We would have spent every day looking over our shoulders.’

‘I see…’ she mused. ‘You did all this for me?’

‘I love you, Jess,’ I told her.

‘Oh Alex, I love you too…so much. You’ve become my world. I can’t tell you how much I love you.’

I smiled at her. ‘And it’s over now…this nightmare-it’s well and truly over. We can relax and begin our life together.’

She smiled. ‘And you’ve seen our future?’

‘Yes. It’s happy…with marriage and children.’

She looked delighted. ‘Let’s kick start this then…marry me?’ she asked.

‘Yes,’ I said simply, and threw myself forwards into her arms.

  ‘I love you, Jess.’

‘I love you too, Alex. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.’

She held me close and I felt our souls connect. We had made it…it hadn’t been easy but we had finally made it. As I closed my eyes, I drifted…

Jess and I walked on the beach. Jess held the baby while I held my son’s little hand. Laughter peeled out from our voices as we chatted and joked. Happiness filled the air around us. I gazed up at my wife and smiled, amazed I had been blessed with such a wonderful family. Her beautiful clear, crystal green eyes-with flecks of brown looked down to meet mine. ‘I love you honey,’ she said in her head. I smiled at her. We didn’t even need to speak sometimes; our connection was from within.
