He had been gone for less than an hour. “How am I going to survive when summer is over, Ezzy?”
“I can’t begin to understand those love feelings, my dear.”
“Oh, really? So what do you and Morgan have planned for the summer? And does this mean the end of Karma Inc.?”
“We’re going to take things one day at a time. As for Karma Inc., I’ve got some big plans for the future.” Ezzy looked at me and gave me a little nudge with her shoulder. “I’m taking her to Chicago tomorrow. We’re going to meet up with Luke. I have a night of debauchery planned for the three of us. You know what I mean?”
“Oh, yes. Of course.” I was excited to hear this wasn’t the end of Karma Inc. For once, I wasn’t overly worried about the future. Today was about living in the moment.
“You and Gabe should come along. The more the merrier I always say.” Ezzy winked. “Just kidding. Oh, speaking of good sex, something werebear this way comes. What is he carrying?”
“Oh…nothing much.” I started to cry when I saw what it was. Gabe had a big smile and a piece of birch bark in his hand.
Epilogue
I patted my paws together in approval when Kelly finished her story. She had a sparkle in her eye and the kind of self-satisfied smile you can only get when you’ve successfully outwitted someone. Marie had the same smile, but I have to say they looked more pleased with their immunity deal than arrogant about having thwarted the council. The old judgmental witches mumbled amongst each other about the conclusion of the story. I didn’t need to join in. To me, the answers were all clear.
When Gabe the werebear dove into the maelstrom with the copper box, he lured the evil Stella to her demise. I was sure the old witches were arguing about the classification of Stella. Was she a demon? Perhaps a revenant? I had the answer to that question. When the witch, Stella, died many centuries before, she transformed herself into a dybbuk. A dybbuk is a rare, malevolent spirit that possesses a body in order to seek vengeance among the living.
Finally, I thought about the Vodniks. I am quite familiar with water spirits and they are about as trustworthy as humans—which isn’t saying much. Every now and again you’ll come across some that are of the benevolent type, and that appears to be the case with the Vodniks of Caldron Falls.
An interesting name, isn’t it? Caldron Falls. A magical place fed by a mystical spring which created a clan of werebears and became home to a family of water nymphs. When the elder Vodnik dove in after Gabe and Stella, he did what his kind do best, saving the drowned. The magic of the water certainly purged the dybbuk, Stella, from Gisele and restored her former life. Gabe, being from the werebear clan that originated in that spring, was saved by the enchanted pool and the water spirit.
Maybe the council was debating if a cliffhanger still existed, and if Kelly’s immunity was voided. After all, they didn’t know what happened to the copper box or the dybbuk, once it left Gisele. I knew the answer to that as well. Once a dybbuk’s revenge plot is foiled it ceases to exist. Stella was no more and her box became nothing more than another curious old antique. I wasn’t about to let Kelly’s illicit, yet true love, for the werebear be ruined by these idiot witches. So I silenced the council. Yes, silenced those fools, frozen and forced to listen to my words.
“I believe we have to still resolve the fate of the evil spirit and her copper box. However, this is beyond the scope of our investigation. The council and all union locals will be ordered to keep an eye out for any new possessions by the evil spirit, Stella.” I added that little morsel to please the old hags. “The witch brought before the council is dismissed without charges.”
Kelly thanked me and Marie nodded. Then they vanished in a cloud of smoke.
I sometimes wonder about Kelly and Gabe and the rest of them. They seem to have very fun and exciting lives. I have nine lives and every one of them is being smothered by the daft old bags here. Perhaps someday I’ll make a trip to America to visit these witches.
