Royal Fae Bodyguard (Brunswick Academy for Gifted Girls Book 1)

She was definitely parading him around to the widest possible audience and he laughed at the thought as all the younger girls gasped, even the ones who had no idea he was royalty. He was rather striking. He could hide his ears easily from human eyes but he didn’t bother among magical folk. With his ears up and with his long, silver white-blonde hair and tall, lithe frame and flawless pale skin, he was a formidable sight. Girls were practically swooning as he walked by and Cara increasingly looked like the cat who had gobbled up the canary.
“Alright,” Cara said, nearly fifteen minutes later, after they’d circled back and beelined around the school until finally arriving at Ms. Friar’s office where they were greeted and then told to wait by Miss Diz and sat down in two plush velvet chairs to wait because Friar was indeed in the middle of a class. She dropped her backpack in her lap and hugged it protectively, a little smile of satisfaction on her face.
“Had fun, did you?” Dayen said, smirking. “Trotting me around to show everyone your prince?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Cara replied, but he didn’t miss the smile on her face. He leaned over and kissed her temple and she giggled. “Shut up.”
They didn’t need to wait long after all. Word of their arrival had quickly gotten around the school and Ms. Friar, apparently leaving her class to do some busy work (since the potential finding of a totem that would help bring the entire universe back into balance was at this particular moment more important than fourth-years learning defensive spells) came hustling back to her office, looking harried and excited.
“Do you have it?” Ms. Friar asked before so much as greeting Dayen, though she must have known who he was.
Cara got to her feet, looking slightly chagrined. She had told Dayen she wanted it to be a bit of a surprise. She unzipped her backpack and wordlessly took out the totem as Dayen stood to join her. Ms. Friar clapped a hand to her mouth. She looked stricken. Her eyes shone. If this was her reaction to the collection of the first totem, Dayen couldn’t imagine how she would react to the last.
Ms. Friar sighed, gently taking the small wooden statue from Cara with its frowning demonic face and its ruins carved into the ancient wood. She treated it as fragile, though the thing was quite solid, even if its magic was immense.
“Some part of me worried this was all a farce,” Ms. Friar whispered, staring at the totem. “But this proves it. Ben has been right about everything. God, what a relief.”
“Great to know you were totally in doubt of this entire venture,” Cara said with a snort.
“Well, I never doubted you, my dear,” she said. And to Dayen, she curtseyed just subtly enough to get her point across. “Apologies for not addressing you properly, Prince Dayen. I was eager to-”
“No apologies necessary,” Dayen said, ever the polite royal even while wearing skinny jeans and a designer sweatshirt. “Humans really don’t have to address fae royalty as fae do…”
“I know, but I like to,” Ms. Friar said loftily. “Not every day we get royalty.” She smiled knowingly at Cara and said, “Am I to understand he’s your, uh, reward then?”
“Ah!” Dayen yelped. “Is that how you think of it?”
“Well, I don’t,” Cara said, huffing a little. “Also yes, he is.” She took his arm, blushing despite herself. “He is...my fated mate. Wonders never cease.”
“They never do, my dear.” She tipped her head, her eyebrows rising. “Am I to understand that you will be a princess then?”
“She will be a queen!” Dayen said, lifting his chin proudly. “The finest warrior queen the realm has ever seen. The people will adore her.” He spoke in a stage whisper to Ms. Friar as if sharing a conspiracy. “I scored a Brunswick graduate. How about that?”
“I like him,” Ms. Friar said, chuckling. “We should have him write a blurb for our brochures when we scout for recruits.” Cara only rolled her eyes but Dayen could see that she was proud and it pleased him. “Your mission is completed,” Ms. Friar said firmly. “We’ll need you here again once your fellow graduates’ missions are completed. Until then, well done, Cara.”
Cara nodded at that, and took Dayen’s hand. He kissed her knuckles as they made their way out and up another flight of stairs to the dorms. Cara was grinning, unable to hide her happiness, and Dayen basked in it. Her classmates were found lazing around their common room and when Cara walked in with a boy, they all looked up in surprise and then a bit of awe.
“You did it,” one girl said from her spot on the couch. “Didn’t you?” She had been staring at her phone, but now she looked up with wide eyes.
“I did,” Cara replied, grinning. There were four girls and they crowded around the couch in the common room, brazenly staring at Dayen who felt a little like an animal in the zoo at this point. “And this is my mate. Prince Dayen of the fae realm, this is Addy,” she gestured to the girl on the couch who had spoken and then to the other tree; a demon-looking girl with blood orange hair, an obvious mermaid (even in her “human” form) with violet eyes, and a fairly ordinary human girl with a brown bob and wire-rim glasses, “and Lilith and Isla and Freya.”
“Hi!” They all said together.
“You bagged a prince?” Lilith asked. “Good job, fae.”
“Say what you want,” Dayen said casually, “but I am, by far, the lucky one in this relationship. It’s an honor to meet all of you though.”
“Awww!” Isla the mermaid clapped her hands. “He’s romantic!”
“Are you going to be a queen then?” Freya asked.
“Yes, she is,” Dayen responded, throwing his arms around her shoulders. “I don’t know you all yet. But you’ll obviously be invited to the wedding following the graduation ceremony, once all your missions are completed.”
“What if the missions take a long time?” Addy asked worriedly. “We really don’t know. We don’t know what’s going to happen…”
“We’ll play it by ear,” Cara said easily, and leaned into Dayen. “Don’t forget, Dayen, they’ll all have weddings of their own to go to.”
“Oh geez,” Isla muttered. “I hadn’t even thought of that.”
“What if we fail?” Freya said, nibbling on her thumb. “I mean we’ve got one down and four to go. But-”
“You won’t,” Cara told her, and reached out to squeeze Dayen’s hand. “Because none of you will be alone. You’ll have the help of your mate. You’ll make each other stronger, just like we did.”
“You guys are so cute, it’s disgusting,” Lilith sighed.
“I’m sorry to disgust you,” Dayen said in the tone he always used to charm people effortlessly. “But if you’re still able to eat, we’d love to take you to lunch.”
“Lunch with a fae prince?” Isla said, all but lighting up. “I’m down.”
“Keep your mitts off him, mermaid,” Cara told her, although she was smirking. “He’s mine.”
“I can’t wait to get a mate,” Isla grinned.
“I can’t wait to find my totem.” Lilith grabbed her purse and the others rose to follow Cara and Dayen out to the hall. “The mate, I don’t really care about.”
Cara snickered at that and exchanged a knowing look with Dayen. “Yeah, you say that now. But just you wait and see...”
