Sounds of Yesterday

“We’re going on this Euro trip for a month.” I stare at the ceiling then shift my eyes over to the window. “I’m going to miss everyone here.”

“At least you’ll have me.” Alex pulls me against him and tries to kiss me.

  “Eh, I’d prefer going solo.”

He stops moving and looks down at me with a dark look.

I chuckle and bring his face down to mine. I smile as his eyes lighten. I close my eyes and–wait!

My eyes shoot open and zero in on my left hand. My ring finger is currently on display because of the aquamarine diamond ring sitting on it.

I sit up quickly and hold my hand up.

I whip my head to the left, wide eyes on Alex. He didn’t!

“You really hate having the attention on you. I thought doing it now would be perfect.”

  “Alex.”

“This way, you can’t say no,” he adds with a cocky grin.

I drag my eyes back to the ring until tears blur my vision.

  “You’re my future, blue.”

I sit up on my knees and try to make my bedhead look good. I wipe the sleep from my eyes and pinch my cheeks for color. I am naked and I’m worrying about my appearance. I’m pretty sure Alex doesn’t care what state I’m in as long as my boobs are out.

Alex sits up and leans against the headboard with that damn smile of his that turns me into a pile of blushing, emotional goo.

“Am I yours?” he asks with a blush creeping up his neck. “Will you marry me?”

This man…this beautiful, kind man who has a half sleeve on his right arm full of memories we’ve made is asking me to be his wife and he is still that shy guy he was back in high school. The first tattoo he got was of a rose, for me. From there, he’s added a little bit of us, creating something beautiful that I love to stare at when he’s sleeping beside me. He’s endured the pain of a needle stabbing his skin thousands of times and yet, asking this one question, makes him blush like he’s a teenage boy and he just asked me for a naked picture.

“God, I fucking love you!” I jump onto his lap and take his face into my hands again, kissing him hard. “You are a song I never want to stop playing. You’ve been on repeat ever since I heard your voice, your laugh, your heartbeat. You are the sounds of yesterday that I seek out when I’m composing a new song.” I sit back against his legs with a silly smile on my lips. “Are you my future? Alex, you’re my past, present, and future. I want to do everything with you. I want to grow old and bitch at you until I can’t.” I press my lips against his and then bite them. “You’re my everything.”

  “Is that a yes?”

I burst into a laugh and Alex decides to tackle me to the bed. When he settles in-between my legs and stares down at me with a twinkle in his eyes, I sigh and close my eyes.

I love seeing the life back in his beautiful eyes.

There hasn’t been a day since we’ve gotten back together when the sadness creeps up and kills us. One tragic moment destroyed us both. If the love of your life died, would you die with them? I think it’s possible. I was shattered, my soul murdered, that day before my eighteen birthday. Alex had the biggest part of me and that day, he lost it. We were left two huge gaping holes of a human body.

We are the air the other breathes.

The blood that keeps each other’s heart beating.

  He is my soulmate.

  My light.

  And I’m his.

“Yes. It’s a million times yes!”

  THE END
