“What’re you looking for?” I asked her.

  “My phone. I’m texting Colton.”

Ashley and I exchanged confused looks.

“Colton will beat his ass,” Constance said as she furiously typed out a text message.

I grabbed the handle to the door and Constance slammed the door closed again. “Don’t go out there. Just stay here.” Her phone rang and she answered, “Hey…yep, the same guy from the other weekend…I don’t know, he’s psychotic…he sent pictures of her and Gavin…okay…” she hung up her phone.

I’d worked myself up to the point of becoming nauseous. Bracing myself against the porcelain sink, I stared at Constance’s reflection in the mirror.

Constance looked over at Ashley. “Colton wants you to find the psycho and show him where he’s at. Then him and Adam are gonna get him outside and take his phone.”

I stood there in disbelief that this was really happening. A few weeks ago my life was completely normal, damn close to boring — and now I was in a seemingly forbidden relationship and had a stalker?

  What the hell?

Constance bolted out the door and Ashley and I followed her into the bar. I was internally freaking out. My heart was skipping, my skin was moist with sweat, and I thought I was close to hyperventilating as I frantically scanned the crowd to spot Dan. Just as I walked over to Gavin I found Dan down by the stage. He was perched against the edge of the stage, one leg crossed in front of the other, the electronic glow from the screen on his phone casting an eerie shadow on his Quasimodoish face. “He’s by the stage,” I whispered to Constance.

She and Ashley looked over, and I made my way back to Gavin. Constance called Colton over to her. I watched as she whispered in his ear, Ashley was standing beside her. Colton glanced over to the stage and pushed his sleeves up. His nostrils flared and his gaze honed in on Dan. I kept glancing over my shoulder to see what was happening.

“What’s wrong?” Gavin touched my leg. “You all right?”

  “Yeah, I’m just tired.”

“You ready to go?” he asked, brushing my hair behind my shoulder, his eyes focused on my lips.

I watched Adam and Colton close in on Dan. As they approached, Dan looked up and somewhat lost his balance. Adam and Colton cornered him and I saw Dan shaking his head. Adam grabbed Dan’s arm, jerking him away from the stage and pulling him in the direction of the emergency exit.

“Brooke?” Gavin’s voice startled me and I jumped.

“Huh? Yeah — I’m sorry. Let me finish my drink,” I said and redirected my eyes toward Gavin.

Rubbing my shoulders with his hands, he said, “You that tired?” He smiled and positioned his mouth over my ear. “I was hoping I could take you home and do all types of dirty things to you again.”

His words penetrated me. “I’m not that tired,” I said.

“You two disgust me,” Constance moaned as she took a seat next to me.

Looking back, I saw that the guys were gone. I finished my drink and stood to leave just as Colton came back in and walked over to Ashley.

While Gavin and I said goodbye to everyone, my gaze constantly darted back to the door, terrified of why Adam hadn’t come back in yet. I turned to Colton and he flashed a phone in his hands as he waved goodbye.

  “Did Adam leave?” Gavin asked.

I shrugged and Gavin wrapped his arm around me as we headed toward the door.

I was worried that Adam never came back in, not that I thought anything had happened to him, but my thoughts started snowballing. By the time I had gotten back to Gavin’s, I had convinced myself that they accidentally killed Dan and now Adam was out trying to dump the body somewhere.

  Chapter Twenty-two

  Brooke

The next morning I woke up sprawled across Gavin’s bed with the warm light from the tall windows pouring across the foot of his bed. The light shimmered across his black satin sheets. Running my hand across the cool, smooth fabric, I stretched and swung my legs over the side of the bed to stand up. Walking across the large room, I picked up my underwear that Gavin had slung into the floor the night before. I glanced back over to the bed and could see the white outline of my ass cheeks.

As I went back over the events from the night before I realized I’d completely forgotten that Adam hadn’t returned with Colton. I went into the living room to get my phone from my purse, hoping I had a text message from Constance.

Gavin was sitting on his white leather couch, bent over his coffee table and laptop; papers strewn over the surface of the table and floor. All he had on was a pair of gray sweatpants. A pen was clenched firmly in his teeth, the muscles of his jaw slightly tightening and relaxing as he gripped the pen in his mouth. The soft rays of the morning sun danced across his face and highlighted the golden undertones in his irises. I was amazed by how beautiful he was just sitting on his couch working.

“Good morning,” I said softly, sauntering over to the couch and sitting next to him.

Gavin looked up and removed the pen from his mouth. A soft smile crossed his face as he leaned in and gave me a gentle kiss on my lips. “Good morning. Did you sleep well?” He sat back on the couch and opened his arms, inviting me to lay my head on his chest.

Falling into him, I curled my hands underneath my chin. “Perfectly well,” I said.

“You looked like you were. I watched you sleeping for a short while this morning, just admiring how truly gorgeous you are.” He paused. “Do you want some brunch?”

  “Brunch? What time is it?”

“Oh, it’s about 10:45. We didn’t go to bed until about three.” Gavin rose and walked through his dining room to the kitchen. “Do you like omelets?” his voice echoed through the tall ceilings of his house.

“Love them,” I called back to him as I reached down next to the couch and grabbed the strap of my purse. I unzipped it and found my cell phone, which had several missed text messages. My stomach twisted when I saw a text from Adam.

Adam: He won’t bother u anymore. TRUST me!!!

I went to the next two that were from Constance.

Constance: Colton got his phone and this guy is NUTS!!!

Constance: Adam followed him home!!! WTF?

  I texted Constance back.

What? Why did he follow him home? What was on his phone?

Gavin’s surround system broke the silence. The music wasn’t at all what I expected. Looking at Gavin I’d imagined he would like mainstream music — based on the picture in his office I expected the Beatles, but I’d never heard the music pouring through the speakers before. I walked into the kitchen to find Gavin breaking eggs into a skillet. He leaned down to check the flame underneath the pan and turned around to grab a mixture of peppers and onions he had sliced up on the island behind him.

“What band is this?” I asked.

Gavin looked over his shoulder at me. “Deftones. You like them?”

  “I’ve never heard them.”

His feet pivoted to face me and he stared blankly at me. His eyebrows scrunched together and his gaze narrowed. “What? How have you never heard this band?” Reaching over, he picked up a small, flat remote and pressed the volume. “This is one of my favorite bands. The music’s just — sexy.”

I listened for a moment. “I like it. Just not what I’d imagined you listening to,” I said and ran my hand along the cold granite countertop.

“Oh, really? Didn’t see me as a bad boy, aye? Just a pretentious doctor who’s good in the sack?” He laughed.

“No, not at all.” I shook my head. “You’re not at all like I imagined. Not in the least.”

His eyes glinted. “Things are often not exactly as they seem. Right?” His eyes cast to the side briefly before moving back up to mine. “So, you’ve spent some time imagining what I’d be like, what my touch would feel like?” He smiled at me.

My cheeks blushed. I hated how he could make me feel like a thirteen year old get
ting attention from a boy for the first time. It was ridiculous, but I had no control over it.

Turning back, he scattered the items in the skillet. A small plume of smoke rose from the stovetop as he jostled the pan above the open flame.

“So, you cook as well? Hmm… a sexy English doctor who can cook? Where does it stop?” I teased.

His back was still turned to me and he let out a deep laugh. “Well, I’ve had to fend for myself for some time. You learn a thing or two when you’re forced to do for yourself.” He dumped the contents of the dish into the skillet. The spicy aroma of peppers and onions filled the air.

I glanced around his kitchen. The only places I’d really spent a great length of time in his house were his bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen countertops were onyx granite and everything seemed so sleek and clean. I gazed out across the bar into the dining room which had a small cherry table and four chairs. My gaze stopped on a large picture of the Garden of Eden hanging on the back wall behind his wooden buffet. The green color of the tree had washed-out and the serpent twisted around the trunk had the face of a human. The only color that hadn’t faded was the scarlet-red color of the apple that Eve was attempting to pluck from the boughs of the tree. Staring at the aged picture, I found it a peculiar piece of art that didn’t fit with the rest of the items in his house.

“Is that painting old?” I asked, glancing over my shoulder at Gavin.

His eyes rose from the stove and locked on the painting. “It appears to be. I found it in a market when I visited Venice. Thought it to be interested. I’ve got a bit of an eclectic taste in art.”

I turned back around and peered through into his living room. It opened up with large cathedral ceilings decorated with dark wooden beams. The huge windows that stretched from the floor to the ceiling allowed sunlight to pour across the floors. The rays reflected from the edge of a wooden upright grand piano that was in the corner of his living room.

“Do you play the piano?” I asked.

He loosened the egg from the skillet and folded it over. “Yes,” he said, pressing the omelet firmly with the stainless steel spatula before turning the flame off. “I’m not half bad. I’ll have to play something for you sometime.” He glanced back at me with the spatula in his hand. “See if I can impress you.”

“Oh. I think you already know you’ve impressed me on many levels.” I smiled at the sexual undertone. I was still getting use to the forwardness I was able to have with him.

He freed the omelet from the skillet, placed it on a black plate, and sat it at the bar. Reaching into the refrigerator, he asked, “Orange juice?”

  “Please.”

He poured the drink into a glass and then set it next to the plate. I looked over and noticed there was only one plate.

“Are you not going to eat?”

He shook his head. “I ate this morning when I woke up,” he said as he wiped the counter off.

“You didn’t have to cook just for me. Now I feel bad.” I picked up the fork and cut into the omelet.

“I wanted to. I enjoy doing things for you.” Folding his arms, he leaned against the counter. “It makes me feel good.” He pushed himself off the edge of the counter and walked behind me. His hand closed around the back of the wooden chair as he pulled it out from the bar and sat down next to me.

“Do you have any brothers or sisters?” he asked, resting his elbow on the countertop and placing his chin in the palm of his hand.

It was odd that we knew so much about each other’s bodies, but knew so little about each other’s lives. I was used to relationships starting out with the getting to know you part first. Not to say I wasn’t completely pleased with the way Gavin and I had started out.

I swallowed my food before answering his question, “I have an older sister. She lives in Mobile. What about you?”

  “I have a few brothers.”

I took a sip of the orange juice and looked over at him. “In England?” I asked.

“In Europe. I’m the only one who came to the States.”

I took another bite of the omelet and realized I should probably comment on his extraordinary culinary skills. “This is delicious, by the way. The only thing I know how to do is scramble eggs.” I paused. “How often do you see your family?”

“Usually once a year. I generally take off around Christmas because the patient flow is slow.”

He rose from the chair and scooted it back under the counter, the legs made a scraping sound as he pushed it in. “I’m going to go finish that report. I’m afraid if I don’t do it now it won’t get done, although I’d much rather sit here and talk with you.”

My eyes followed him as he walked back toward the living room. I couldn’t keep my eyes away from him. He was like a living, breathing piece of art that I wanted to possess.

I finished my brunch, washed my dish off, and placed it inside the dishwasher. Constance’s ring tone rang through the air and I went to the coffee table to pick it up.

  “Hey.”

“Brooke. You’ve got to get over here. You’ve got to see what this guy has in his phone.”

  “Just tell me,” I insisted.

“No,” Constance’s tone sounded disturbed. “You’ve got to see this.”

Gavin was still typing out his report. “Okay. Okay. I’ll call you in a little while,” I said into the phone, my agitation showing in my tone.

I hung up and stood at the end of the couch. I asked Gavin, “Do you think you could swing me by my house in a little bit?”

Gavin pulled his eyes away from his computer screen and tilted his head to the side. “You mean you aren’t going to let me hold you captive all day?” A devilish smile formed across his lips.

I was tempted to push him down on the couch and have him right then, but the distraction of what Dan had on his phone kept that temptation under control, not to mention the fact that Constance refused to tell me what Dan had on his phone made me extremely nervous.

“Oh, trust me,” I insisted, “I’d love nothing more than that, but Constance is having some type of crisis and it’s my duty as her best friend to console her.”

“Okay. Just let me finish this and I’ll drive you back home,” Gavin said.

Texting Constance to tell her I’d be at my apartment in about half an hour, I cursed her because all I really wanted to do was have a sex fest with Gavin all day. Her keeping secrets from me was intruding on those marvelous plans.

  Chapter Twenty-three

  Gavin

Shutting my laptop, I rose from the couch, stretching and rubbing my hand over my stomach in an effort to entice her. “Must I really take you back?” I asked as I glanced down at her lying on my couch.

Her mouth bowed up slightly. “I most certainly don’t want you to!”

Placing my knee on the cushion between her legs, I lowered myself down slowly, seductively. “Give me fifteen minutes, and then I give my word I’ll take you home.”

I placed my lips in front of hers, angling my head slightly. My nose barely brushed against the tip of hers as I touched my lips to hers, their fullness sent a pulse of heat across my body.

My tongue dipped into her mouth and made slow, shallow strokes against hers. The feeling of kissing her, the fact that I could press my lips against her and not take that piece my kind craved was beyond erotic — it was dangerously intoxicating.

“Now, this is going to need to come off,” I said as I pulled the bottom of her shirt up and over her head, tossing it behind my couch. Her breasts were so petite, yet full; the underwire of her bra pushed them up, exaggerating their roundness. I could feel myself harden and lengthen as I slowly pushed the cups down exposing her bare breasts. Her nipples perked up from the sensation of my necklace sweeping across her skin as I lowered my head to cover her body with my mouth.

Placing my hand on her jaw, I rubbed my finger softly behind her ear while my other hand cupped her breast. Squeezing it in my palm,
I pinched her nipple and rolled it back and forth between my fingertips. Her breath became ragged and I pushed my erection against her. I pulled my sweatpants down, kicking them off of my feet as I sat up on my knees and slowly unzipped her jeans, inching them down and pulling them from her feet.

I snaked my hands up her warm, smooth legs to her hips and then across to her navel. My fingers traced under the top of her panties, pulling the lace away from her body, glancing up to catch her gaze locked onto me. I gave a languorous smile as I traced the edge of her panties and slid my finger inside savoring the wetness my touch had created. Inserting the very tip of my forefinger into her, I rubbed along her opening. The silky, feminine feeling of her skin was something I couldn’t get enough of. Staring intently at her, I pulled my finger out and grabbed the sides of her panties, pulling them down with one steady tug. I unfastened her bra, pinching it in the middle and pulling it slowly off her arms.

The way she looked lying completely nude on my couch… it was as though this was exactly where she belonged. To me. The sunlight cast a warm light across her flawless skin and a twinge of passion rose in my chest, a feeling I’d never experienced. I felt captive to that feeling, to that emotion – to her. The things I wanted to do to this woman — I could have easily stayed there all day pleasing her, tasting her, feeling her…

“What would you have me do first?” I asked, my hands gripping her thighs.

She shrugged and that slight blush stained her cheeks.

  Damn, she’s exquisite.

“Let’s see, would you like me to — ” I lowered my head, my mouth tenderly working its way across her thigh. She was staring at me with her lip pulled tightly underneath her teeth.

My mouth found the crease of her leg and skimmed across her, lightly licking as I crossed over to her other thigh. The warmth of her was so inviting. The feel of her flesh underneath my mouth caused the most intense feelings of forbidden lust to rise within me. Her ass tightened in my palm as I skirted my tongue over her clit. Pulling her cleft apart with my middle fingers, her wetness seeped between them. I stuck my tongue out and slowly, deliberately flicked it on top the soft ball bundled with nerve endings. Brooke gasped just before releasing an indulgent, sexy moan of pleasure as I encircled her clit with my lips, sucking lightly on it while my thumb caressed her slickened opening. Reaching my tongue down, I curled it inside of her. The satisfying taste of a woman was something I’d forgotten. Nothing is as pleasing to me as the way a woman tastes, as the feeling of her legs clamping around my head from the almost torturous pleasure my lips can force upon her. Control. Never would I have imagined I’d have the control to enjoy a mortal the way I enjoyed Brooke. Her taste sent a primitive, dominate urge through my veins. My grip on her thighs tightened as I fought back my urges.
