Glaston (The Gifted Book 1)

The room was moving in slow motion as I saw Slade draw a gun and aim it at Vlaine’s head.
“Vlaine,” I screamed as I replicated his power. All the energy I could muster I shot in a tight concussive ball at Slade’s chest. Slade’s body whipped across the room as if it had been propelled from a slingshot, the force only stopped by a wall now adorning a hole from the impact. His body crumbled and he lay motionless on the floor.
A horrible guttural scream escaped my lips as I fell to the floor in pain. I searched my body for blood but found nothing. Jeremiah lifted me in his arms and I was still screaming. Pain clutched my entire body, it felt like all my bones had been broken.
Jeremiah shushed me like a baby and cooed, “oh, the quandaries of being an empath.”
I fought through the agony and tried to search for Vlaine. In my peripherals I could see silver hair coming closer then Luther rested his hand on my forehead. My eyes rolled back as consciousness slipped. Shaking my head I tried to regain composure and I forced my eyes to open. A warm hand touched mine and in an instant the pain was gone. My eyes fluttered open to see a white room equipped with various medical machines. I was still in Jeremiah’s arms and as I looked around panicked, he lay me down delicately on a gurney.
“Where am I?” Tremors shook my body as I propped myself up onto my elbows.
“Shhh child,” Jeremiah shushed me, “you’re safe now.” He turned to Luther and the other man, “we shall let her rest today.”
The strange person who was holding my hand was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and I could not see a face. I tried to read the hooded person as they walked away but I barely had the energy to sit up, let alone get into someone’s head. Whoever it was had made the pain I had felt from the attack stop instantaneously.
I watched them walk out of the room then I felt a breeze by my left side. I turned and looked up to see Erik standing by me. His long hair was tied back and ash was smudged onto his cheeks. He stroked my arm gently and a calm sensation spread throughout my body. I shook my head and tried to fight the serene feeling his touch left.
Erik leaned over my body, his face inches from mine. He brushed my hair back gently and grinned. “Welcome to the tree house, Abrielle.”
