The drell-kai looked up at the comet barreling toward it. With an open maw, a thick stream of fire burst forth. Juna’s swords came together when the stream hit her dead on. The half-troll continued her dive, the flaming stream of dragon breath split in half. The monster poured on the flames until the half-troll smashed into his snout, slamming it shut. Juna sped across the snout until she was right before the creature’s remaining good eye.

The drell-kai stared as the half-troll raised her blades, no fear in her dark eyes. The monster roared as two blades penetrated its remaining eye. Juna twisted the blades before jumping into the air. The monster blindly swung its three arms, trying to stop the powerful entity that robbed its sight.

Juna’s body floated before turning into a razor spin. Swords out, her entire body became a blur as she moved without the pull of gravity. The drell-kai swung massive arms until pain cut into a shoulder. Torturous agony filled the monster as a white blur cut down into one shoulder, severing two arms on one side. Black ichor spurted from the stump as the monster stumbled around. The health bar above it turned from yellow to red.

Juna’s body didn’t stop spinning as she floated before the thrashing monster and began cutting into the left shoulder. Roars turned to screeches as the left arm separated from the monster and hit the ground with a loud crash. The mystical half-troll spun to a halt and gazed down on the armless monster. Body turning into a spin once again, she became a ball of light and blasted forward. The monster’s cries silenced as Juna cut into its chest and into its digital heart before exciting out its back.

The half-troll turned and watched as the drell-kai stumbled forward. Eyes widening, she saw as the monster stumbled toward the kingdom wall. Bursting forward, she sheathed her blades and hoped she had enough strength to guide its fall when black lightning slammed into her back, sending her spiraling through the air.

Maggar’s large hand smoked as he smiled to himself. “Thank you Juna for assisting with taking the kingdom.”

Rayna watched with subdued annoyance as the drell-kai crushed trolls underneath, tipped forward and fell.

  “Retreat!” the bard screamed.

Guards looked up as the shadow of the twisted giant monster came toppling over them. Many jumped from the battlements as others fired into the dying creature. All was not enough as the monster crashed into the wall. Stone cracked and shattered as its body fell, taking scorpion crossbows and several digital lives before the monster’s face rested on an Eloran street. Light cracked along its body as a death rattle filled the area. A moment later, the fearsome monster shattered into thick shards of light, illuminating the breach into the city with a greenish haze.

“Attack the breach!” Trolls chanted as they rushed through explosions.

An arrow flew past Rayna’s head as she stared down, the trolls surging toward the large crack in their defense.

“Time for the encore,” the bard whispered as she hefted up her lute and began to play.

Claudia grunted as blades sank into her body. The lancer held the elixir to her lips, drinking as damage appeared in her vision and quickly healed away. She hedged her bets and for a brief instant, felt a glimmer of hope. Troll blades slid from multiple points along her body, rising once again to stab and hack at her. Intent flashed and the lancer saw her chance and took it.

Curling forward, Claudia bolted to her feet and slammed a shoulder into a troll breastplate. The troll barely took a step back as rage filled its black eyes. Taking hold of his chest plate, the lancer leaned into him as trolls rushed her. Kicking her enchanted leg out, the heel planted on the first incoming troll and sent him flying backwards into his companions. The power in the blow caused a dozen armored trolls to crash into each other.

The troll Claudia held onto looked down, stunned as the lancer curled her leg back up between them and planted her heel on his stomach. The troll bent in half as his body was thrown into his comrades, sending bodies in all directions like a boulder rolling through tall grass.

Claudia glanced around as the trolls surrounding her regained their balance. Bending her knees, the lancer launched into the air just as swords swung down, missing her legs by inches. Several trolls with bows aimed upwards and fired at the fleeing lancer.

Claudia guided her landings, looking for empty patches as she retreated to Elora. The lancer watched as she landed and bounded back into the sky, surveying the battlefield. The troll legions pressed hard, the horde funneling toward the breach. The night sky was alive with magical explosions, arrows and the roar of combat.

The lancer gazed down on her descent, eyeing a troll marching with a spear in his hand. The troll glanced to his left, seeing the smiling lancer as she landed silently, grabbed his spear and slammed a foot into his armored side. Claudia snatched the spear as the troll flew sideways into his fellow trolls. Jumping, the green haired lancer was airborne once again, making her way back to Elora’s battlements.

Edric watched as Juna fell from the sky and crashed in the distance. Claudia bounded up into the air, making her way back to the castle. The summoner and monk ran until the horde of trolls began to fill the empty space around them. The player looked on as they were close to Elora’s walls but not close enough.

Skidding to a halt, the summoner reached into his satchel and pulled out a lock stone. Faye turned her back to Edric while Leeta rushed to her master’s side. Seventy feet away, Kadvar stalked closer, the demon falling to its knees behind him and shattering into shards of light.

Faye and Leeta stood side by side, fists and weapons up as the dread lord eyed them. The wood elf and ogre took in their surroundings as trolls edged closer, a row of wicked weapons ready to butcher them. The scent of magic and death hung in the air, an invisible mist they could all taste. Thick plumes of smoke from the bonfires snaked into the air, casting strange shadows.

Edric’s hard stare never wavered as he readied his spell. Trolls crowded closer, black eyes on the small group. The summoner clenched his jaw as words formed. Edric felt the shadow of defeat loom closer until he growled the mystical command. A large arcane circle appeared as energy snaked out from the lock stone. Trolls backed off as something big crawled out of the circle. In mere seconds, the drell-kai reached his true height and looked down with spider-like eyes.

“Nykor, make some room,” Edric whispered with power.

Kadvar bolted into a run as the large drell-kai turned on the troll horde and spit a stream of acid. Trolls screamed as their armored bodies melted and a moment later shattered to light. Nykor whipped his spiked club tail into the gathered horde, sending bodies tens of feet into the air. The monster’s many eyes blinked as it spun and crashed into the trolls.

Troll mages dispersed through the hordes unleashing spells while others let arrows fly. Arrow points bounced off thick scales while magical blasts struck the beast. The fierce monster fought on, ignoring damage as it flattened anything that got to close.

Edric turned his attention to the dread lord charging them. Faye and Leeta squared up together. Kadvar kept his gray eyes on the summoner, blood sword at the ready. When the dread lord reached the two women, the world fell into images, one after the other.

Leeta lashed out, the dread lord blocking her swing while lifting a boot. Faye stepped forward, fists opening and catching the dread lord’s boot as he tried to kick her. The wood elf grunted from his power and before she could counter him, the dread lord used her to launch himself upwards. Kadvar kept his eyes on the summoner as his lips stopped moving. Their gazes locked as Edric made no move to dodge the incoming sword.

Edric grunted, knowing full well he had to continue to concentrate to finish the spell. The sword penetrated his shoulder and exited out his back.

You have taken 90 damage! HP: 50/140

  “Accept your fate,” Kadvar smirked.

Edric grabbed the sword blade and held it tight. Whispering a word of power, the summoner grinned.

  Summon angel! Mana: 190/230

An arcane circle appeared behind the dread lord and as he pulled his sword back, bringing Edric a little closer, a white sword stabbed out from the portal and into Kadvar’s back. The dread lord’s eyes widened as the tip appeared from his chest and several inches from Edric’s chest.

You take 10 blade damage! HP 40:140

Edric coughed up blood as he smiled in mad glee. “So should you.”

The armored female angel twisted the blade as she fully formed. Faye and Leeta were right beside her. Kadvar planted a hand on Edric and shoved him hard. The summoner hit the ground, fishing out a healing potion and watching as Faye, Leeta and the summoned angel unleashed their attacks.

The ogre brought her maces down on the dread lord, one of them shredding into his shoulder. The force of the attacks was so strong, the dread lord stumbled to the side, Faye’s fists slamming into him. Kadvar tried to break away as the angel drew back her sword and hacked downward with Leeta. Taking a step forward, Faye rammed her heel into the side of the dread lord’s knee. Kadvar collapsed as the three women beat his prone back.

The dread lord hissed his contempt as he called on his dark power. A dozen arcane circles appeared around them. Edric drank down a healing potion before calling on another summoning spell.

You drink a healing potion! You are healed 100 points. HP:140/140

  Summon Elemental! Mana: 165/230

Earth shifted and rose. A hand made of dirt and stone burst from the ground, followed by another. As the elemental clawed to the surface, ghostly knights rose up from arcane circles. When a dozen spectral knights reached their full height, they drew swords and prepared to advance.

Dark power rolled across Kadvar’s body as the three women rained down strikes. When the black power reached its zenith, the dread lord growled a command, dark energy bursting from his body. The shockwave sent Faye, Leeta and the angel flying up and onto their backs as they hit the ground.

“I shall not be bested by vermin like you,” Kadvar seethed as he slowly stood up, his face gaunt and gray, eyes glowing.

“How about vermin like me,” said a hollowed gruff voice.

A large shadow loomed over the dread lord and he slowly looked up. A giant armored golden mechanical dwarf stood, steam bursting up from thick shoulders and a blank face looking down.

“Faye, Edric, Leeta, return to the city. I’ll show this lad some proper respect,” Dumadin ordered.

“Your machine won’t help you,” Kadvar said with a sinister hiss.

The golden guardian raised two impressive fists, blank eyes on the dread lord. “My counter says 230 dead trolls. I’m sure a dread lord will count as two trolls, maybe one and a half.”

Dark power surged along Kadvar’s body, arcing from his chest into his arms and legs. “After I carve up Edric, I’m going to make his fellow rulers scream my name as I defile them.”

“Aye lad, now you’ve insulted the people I respect and love. I’m afraid you made this personal,” Dumadin said sternly. “SO, STOP TALKING YOU PIECE OF UNDEAD SHITE!”

Kadvar bent his legs and charged the giant metal dwarf. The dread lord’s spectral knights turned their attention to the summoner, monk, angel and ogre and charged as well. Edric mentally reached out to Nykor as the very ground shook underneath.

Faye watched as the dread lord slashed at the mechanical dwarf. The guardian rained down large metal fists, missing the dread lord as he spun away and slashed at thick golden arms. Sparks flew with each strike as Dumadin moved levers. Arms swung out, missing the dread lord as he spun away and put some distance between them. The dread lord leered until the golden dwarf pointed a closed fist and it fired it like a cannon. Kadvar jumped away only to take the massive fist to the side that sent him spiraling to the ground. The chain tightened and pulled the fist back onto the guardian’s wrist. The golden dwarf stalked toward the dread lord as he slowly rose to his feet.

“Help him,” Edric ordered the armored angel.

The angel nodded and flew into the air before diving down, sword in hand. Spectral knights and trolls rushed the group before the ground shifted under their feet. Edric’s earth elemental charged the incoming undead. Rocky fists grew larger right before it reared back and slammed into the enemy. Spectral knights and trolls shattered as the elemental continued its charge. Ghostly swords stabbed into the elemental’s gut as arrows and swords crashed into it.

Nykor spit a long thick stream of acid at the trolls surrounding them before turning to his new master. The Drell-kai rushed toward them as Edric waved him closer. The summoner looked up at his new companion. The beast’s tail wagged back and forth as a pointed tongue fell out the side. Lifting a leg, it created a step for his master and friends.

“We can’t leave him,” Faye shouted over the noise of battle.

“Dumadin! If we don’t get back to the city and fight, we will lose everything,” Edric shouted with a grim edge.

The golden dwarf’s fingers flexed as the dread lord rushed him. Kadvar leapt into the air, hand grabbing at the metal tubes along the guardian’s neck and his boots planted on its chest. Dumadin smiled as he pressed a button. The top part of the construct spun like a top, faster and faster. The dread lord hung on for dear life, slashing at the sensitive gears at the joints. The dread lord’s sword cracked a gear before the centrifugal force sent him flying to the hard earth and bouncing several times.

Faye’s Guardian raised the slightly damaged arm, flexing fingers before stomping toward the dread lord slowly rising to his feet.

“You damaged my masterpiece, I’ll take beating your hide as payment,” Dumadin cackled.

The dread lord readied himself when Edric’s angel fell from the sky, blade in hand. Kadvar parried the blade, white sparks flying. The holy angel continued a barrage of attacks as the dread lord countered each one.

“Edric, get Faye to safety! I’ll be right behind you after I pound this dead thing to dust,” Dumadin shouted from the guardian.

Edric climbed up onto Nykor’s back and reached down. Faye was next, taking hold of his hand and climbing up. Leeta watched the angel and golden dwarf exchanging attacks and hesitated.

Edric looked down at the ogre, heart heavy. “Leeta, we need you.”

The ogre looked up at her master for a moment before climbing up the drell-kai’s leg and sitting behind Faye. The giant four-legged monster roared before galloping off toward Elora. The earth elemental continued to fight, bashing and stomping on trolls and spectral knights before they climbed over it, hacking and slashing away.

Edric kept his eyes forward as he felt his elemental shatter. Holding tight, Nykor crashed into the trolls, stepping and bashing them as he rushed through. Light shattered all around but the trolls didn’t part. Swords, maces and hammers struck at the monster’s legs as it barreled through their ranks. Arrows bounced off thick armored scales but lightning and fireball attacks struck the sides and legs of the giant monster. Edric watched as Nykor’s hit points drained with each gallop closer to the city.

Edric leaned forward, hugging the drell-kai’s neck. “Don’t give up,” the summoner whispered.

Nykor roared before spitting out a stream of acid; trolls howled in pain as their bodies melted and shattered. A path cleared and the giant monster rushed along, taking damage every step of the way. Edric looked up to the battlements as Rayna played and trolls rushed the breach in the wall.

  ***

The bard looked down as trolls rushed past the firing scorpions and catapults. The trolls were ready to enter the breach and she knew she had to be the one to stop them. Pulling up her playlist of song abilities, she spotted the one she recently earned during her tryst with Edric.

“Time for some love,” Rayna whispered to herself and began to play.

Eyes closing, fingers pressed along lute strings but ha
rd rock vibrations played out. The thick melodies spun together as the bard pulled samples from all her favorite songs and blended them together to make her song of love. The effect was the same no matter what played but the bard thought it would work with some style and flair.

Several tunes spiraled together, pieces pulled from The Rolling Stones, Poison, Whitesnake, Queen, The Beatles and Guns and Roses to form a new love ballad the likes no one had heard before. Vibrations blasted loud, the song drifting down onto the oncoming enemy. Amid explosions and the ringing of steel, ears drank in the harmonic melody. Scattered groups of eyes and heads turned up to the battlements, a bard in wild armor playing her heart out. The invading forces slowed as many couldn’t turn away from the haunting and loving tune. Some slowed from a charge into a walk, confusion clouding their eyes. Others redirected their rage at fellow trolls, unable to understand why they would dare attack a city where such a beautiful bard played.

Trolls looked to one another as they slowed to a crawl. Hands tightened around weapon pommels. Rayna played on as the occasional arrow flew past her. The trolls looked to the confused ones and a moment later began stabbing and slicing at their brothers and sisters in battle. The carnage spiraled out of control as enemy trolls hacked and slashed at one another, slowing down the advance on the breach. Madness took root as those who loved Rayna’s song attacked anyone who wasn’t a part of it. Other trolls were slow to react as blades buried in necks, lost to the haunting melody.

Rayna opened her eyes, staring down as hundreds of trolls fought each other, screaming their love for the bard and laying down their lives for her. Rayna played on, knowing this was only going to stem the tide. Eyes turning, she caught sight of Edric, Faye and Leeta on the back of a drell-kai monster. It pushed on through the hordes, taking arrows and magical attacks the entire way.

Rayna continued to play, hope stirring in her heart as her fellow rulers and friends made their way closer. Eyes locked on them, she didn’t see the group of archers lining up arrows in her direction. A dozen troll archers pulled back taunt bowstrings and carefully aimed as the bard played. With a clear shot, fingers let go and arrows were airborne.
