Shadows from the Past

She looked up at him in surprise. “But you said it’s what kept you going.”
His eyes were warm as he looked down at her. “I found something else to do that.” He squeezed her. “I think we need to have that talk later today. And tonight…”
She quivered with the thought of what he meant the night would hold. “Yes!” she said, the word bursting from her in a happy sputter.
He kissed the top of her forehead. “I want you so badly. From the first moment I saw you.”
The comment was a little disheartening. What man might not want a naked woman. “When I was naked?”
He laughed and jostled her playfully. “You were naked? No. Don’t even suggest that it was a physical reaction. Yes, you were quite lovely, a young vision. But what I remember was what I saw in your eyes. Those eyes as bottomless as that quarry back there. Sucked me in and trapped me. Forever.”
Stacey felt like her insides would implode with happiness. “Forever?” she said breathlessly, realizing that she couldn’t think of anything else to say for once. “Really? Forever?”
“If that’s what you want. We can forget this project and you can help me with something else. Like my life. What do you say to a soak in that big tub of mine? I’d like to see you emerging from it and looking for a towel.”
“Oh, yes.” Tears spilled down her cheeks.
They turned together and walked toward Redfern Manor. The clouds were lifting and the gray stone house was framed in colorful new flower beds Del was planting beside it. The grass was a brilliant green in the afternoon sun. As she grasped Mack’s right hand and he squeezed hers back, she knew she had come home. The ghosts and the shadows dissipated as the thin veil of the mist lifted over the trees.
What would Kendra do now?
Stacey didn’t care. She knew what she wanted to do. She turned and kissed Mack.
