“Well, we thought it was...” This was not a topic of conversation she wanted to have with this man. Because he was Sarnoc, because he was her father, but most of all because he was Rynar. “Are you trying to tell me I’m pregnant?”
Never had he looked so ill in all the time she had known him. “Aye, it appears so.” He looked over his shoulder, as if expecting others to be there. “You do understand what this means, my dear?”
Yes, no, goddamn it. She didn’t understand a single thing now. It was already difficult enough to have feelings for Arric, who had just become the king of this land. Now, a baby? That was impossible! She wasn’t ready to be a mother, with all that entailed.
Apparently the goddess Kerthal had other plans for her.

Acknowledgments
There are so many people who made this book possible.
First off, I must thank my parents Charles and Mary Dana. They ensured I had an excellent education and they gave me the space to pursue my passions in college and beyond. It was their love that made a book like this possible.
I would also like to thank my friends Marie Shortt, Crawford Shortt, Lisa Bruce, Russell Sherman, Ian Sights, and Chrishaun Keller-Hanna, all of whom were part of my life at some critical juncture and helped me believe in myself. I’d also like to thank Matt Herron and other members of Indie Publishing Austin; the Austin region of NaNoWriMo (go Penguins!); colleagues and friends at UT Austin and Automattic; herbalists I met through Nicole Telkes’s Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine; and members of the Texas Freelance Association. Without all of these people, I probably would never have published this book in the first place.
I’d also like to offer a special thanks to those who helped me with various aspects of the book production process: James Egan, David Crews, Laurie Leiker, Kathy Boyd, Vidya Gopalakrishna, Abby Goldsmith, Sue Reading, James Huff, Adrian Hale, Andrea Middleton, and Evin Cooper.
And finally, I’d like to acknowledge the creative minds who inspired me, including writers Katherine Kurtz, Stephen R. Donaldson, Charles De Lint and Diana Gabaldon, and musicians Seamus Egan and Philip Glass.
Live long and prosper!
About Jackie Dana
I write speculative fiction novels and short stories.
As an ‘outlaw author,’ I believe indie publishing gives authors a viable means to escape the confines of the traditional marketplace. Indie publishing brings to life many excellent stories that might once have languished in slush piles, or worse, might never have been read at all. Committed to helping fellow indie authors, I’m currently developing a series of workbooks and other resources to make indie publishing even more accessible.
In my spare time, I’m an herbalist, an amateur photographer, and a homebrewer. I was born in St. Louis, MO, but now I live in Austin, TX, sharing my home with a dog and several cats who constantly strive to revise human-feline power dynamics.
