Towns and Towers: A New Land

“Nothing yet, but let’s keep an eye on him.” “As you wish, Jimmy.”
Sam awoke to the sound of Quinn humming a melody from one of her favorite bands, and with his eyes still closed, he thought for a moment that perhaps everything that had happened was all part of some crazy dream. It seemed a heck of a lot more feasible than the idea of him swinging a sword around and killing monsters, so he lay there for another minute, enjoying his life, until he heard Quinn say, “Come on, sleepy head. It’s time to get up.”
Covering his face with the pillow, Sam’s voice sounded muffled as he said, “Five more minutes. Then I’ll get up for work.”
“Work? I don’t think that’s our main issue, Sam. We need to talk about how we’re going to get home first.”
“Get home?” said Sam questioningly. He then snapped his eyes open as he moved the pillow and saw her sitting on top of the chest in the corner of the room he had rented in Anozira. Groaning, he asked, “What happened?”
“Well, you collapsed in the Tower right after the fight with the minotaur, and what with the other four fighters also being unconscious, there was no way us three girls were going to be able to carry you back. Luckily, your little friend, Anna, was smart enough to bring one of those wire things, and we teleported back to town.”
“She had a warp wire?” asked Sam.
“Yeah, apparently she picked one up from her mother’s store before going in the Tower. Good thing if you ask me.”
Remembering the fight all too well, Sam looked down to his bare arms and asked, “What, um, what happened to Tezukayoshi?”
“Your lizard? He’s fine. In fact, I think he’s a lot more like you than you might want to admit. He’s just behind you, still asleep.”
Looking over, Sam found his friend curled up in the corner of the room with his tail wrapped tightly around his body so that it covered his eyes from the daylight coming in through the window. Sam saw no sign of injury to him, but it did appear that Tezukayoshi was possibly a bit larger than the last time he had seen him. For a second, Sam thought he saw something like a small twitch on his friend’s face, but he couldn’t be sure. Tezukayoshi just seemed to be lying there with his head resting on his forelegs.
Cutting into his thoughts, Quinn said, “You mentioned something earlier about us having to beat the game to get home. Does that mean the exit is at the top of the Tower?”
Looking back at her, Sam answered, “I don’t know, but it’s the best I’ve got to go on so far.”
“So does that mean we have to redo the first floor again?” she asked, and then not waiting for his answer, she followed that question up with another. “How many floors are there, anyway?”
“I don’t think so,” said Sam as he began to get out of the bed. “And as for the number of floors, I’m guessing about ten.” Then asking his own question, he said, “By the way, how is it that you joined up with the Reckoners?”
Smiling, Quinn took him by the arm and said, “There’s a whole story behind that. Let’s grab some breakfast, and I’ll tell you all about it.”
Cutting into Sam’s thoughts, Tezukayoshi perked his head up and asked, ‘Did someone say breakfast?’
