  He moved.

  He spun.

He readied himself for another attack, but thankfully, someone he knew came to his side. There were three of them in fact.

Sasha saw him and stood at his feet.

Kenar stayed with Sasha and looked to the sky. “My God, there are so many of them.”

Sandra nodded, took Jason’s hand and knelt down beside him. “Keep still.” She saw his leg. She saw the wound. She saw the blood. She felt his pain.

“What took you three so long?” Jason cried. The tears for his friends coursed down his face. The pain in his leg only added to the feeling.

Sandra nodded. “You Nightwalkers move too fast for us Wanderers.” She took his leg with both hands and noticed nothing but bone. Missing most of it, she knew he would never heal from such a wound.

He saw this in her eyes. “How bad is it?” He winced.

She tried to smile, but knew that honesty was best. “You lost your leg.”

He nodded. He already knew this. “I guess I’ll have to get used to moving around on one leg then.” He tried to stay calm. He did the best he could do.

Sasha saw him. She watched Sandra. She saw four bodies all around him, and with it, she had enough. She ripped off her shirt. She undid the button of her jeans. She let the eyes at the back of her mind come forward.

Sandra heard her, turned to her and watched with aw.

Her black fur seemed to ooze out from every part of her small frame. Her almost pure white skin turned to an ashen black. Her claws flared out from her fingertips, as she grew taller on her back hind paws. Her teeth pushed out with her jaws. A black wolf, strong and powerful looking, now stood in front of her.

“My God.” She never saw another black wolf before, other than Kalima, and seeing her, knowing that she stood with her, she truly felt astonished beyond all thought.

Sasha looked down at her and winked.

The Shades flying over them did no such thing when they saw her.

They came at her fast. Three of them dipped down at her together.

She noticed two of them fly towards her head.

Sandra watched her spin around. She watched one come towards her back and strike her with an open claw.

The impact stung her shoulder, and blood spilled from three gashes that spread over her arm. She roared from the pain that it caused her.

The second one aimed for her head.

Pain or no pain, she saw it coming, so she swung, letting her clawed right hand lead her attack.

It struck the Shade directly in its right thigh.

It screeched with a high-pitched agony that sounded like the worst hinged door that anyone had ever heard before as it blasted the air.

The impact did the trick. The Shade flung backwards until it disappeared back in to the fog.

Victorious over it, Sasha roared. She growled, and with it, it was time. She followed everything, and lifted her head and howled.

The call carried over the world. It bellowed over the sky. It boomed over everyone at once.

Immediately after it, another set of howls came out from everywhere at once. They came from the area. They boomed from what sounded like the hill behind the castle.

Hearing them, Sandra looked up. “That sounds like dozens of them.” She could not believe it. She did not understand it. She did not know what to think.

Sasha stopped her howl and dropped her head back to Sandra.

Sandra saw something in her eyes. The wolf carried a sparkle. She carried a deep meaning through the yellow of her eyes. Hearing the other howls, she truly felt amazed. “There are more of you, aren’t there?” She had trouble understanding herself.

The thoughts continued when she saw Sasha almost smile.

“We’re not alone. More are coming.” She looked back to Jason, who suddenly calmed all at once. “We have to get to the castle. We have to move on.” She turned to Kenar. “Help me with him.”

  Together, they grabbed Jason’s arms.

Jason gathered his strength. He didn’t know how he did it, but he did manage to get back to his feet.

Together, the four of them moved on. Sasha led the way as Sandra and Kenar helped Jason move back in to the fog.

They brought Rana upstairs. Vincent led her to Devish’s side. Once there with him, she saw Kalima in front of him in chains. A young human boy was with him.

Devish smiled to her when she stopped by his side. “Hello my dear.” He looked back to Kalima. “As you can see, he has returned to us.” He motioned to Kalima with a wave of his right arm. “As you can see he is ready to hand over what belongs to me.” He turned to her and motioned to the young human boy too. “He is ready to fulfill his destiny.”

Rana nodded. She agreed. She had nothing to say.

Jimmy had a thousand things to say to her. “Rana? He’s going to kill you Rana. He’s going to use you.”

She looked at him with wide eyes. “I don’t think so Kalima. You, however, are another story entirely.” She liked seeing him like this—bound and held. She only wished that he was also gagged. “Just give yourself to him. Finish this like you should have done a thousand years ago.”

Devish loved the sounds of her voice. He loved hearing her strength. Yes, he did love her.

Jimmy listened and instantly his eyes flooded over with tears. He could not believe how far she hated him. He, however, knew better than this. “You will never get what you want.” Suddenly, and thankfully, he heard a large echo of howls blowing through the walls. The sounds of those magical calls bounced to him with power. They sounded to him like music. They sounded like a grateful love. He listened and stared Devish down. “You will not win this fight.”

Devish heard the calls. He heard their power. He heard black wolves everywhere. “It cannot be.” He looked up. He looked left, and could tell that they were coming from outside. They were coming from the hillside of his home. Hearing them, he looked back to Kalima and saw the look of power within his eyes. As for him, he now felt fear. He now felt everything all at once.

“Oh yes. It is.” Jimmy smiled. Seeing the fear in his eyes, he couldn’t help it. He loved seeing him. He loved feeling him. He loved the power.

Devish had enough. “Get everyone to the side of the castle. Get them to the hills. Get them over there before they breach the walls.” He looked at everyone with him. He stressed his fear. He shouted his will.

The others there all scrambled to make it back to the first floor. They ran as fast as they could run.

When they were gone, Jimmy flexed his arms. They were still chained by the silver, but he knew what that meant. Obviously Devish didn’t.

Devish watched his flex. With aw he watched as Kalima broke the chains with ease.

Jimmy saw the fear explode through his face. “It seems that you forgot something my brother. I’m not allergic to silver.” And he pulled. The clasps around his wrists snapped clean off. He didn’t even have to struggle against them.

Devish saw this and had enough. He turned, allowing his natural form to flow through his flesh. Instantly, his body flowed over him as his skin bubbled and oozed, making him look like his entire body was made out of nothing but water. Within an instant, he became himself—a half wolf, half bat looking beast.

Jimmy saw this and called on the eyes at the back of his mind. Kalima roared inside him, as he came forward with force.

Danny stood there and watched everything and with it, it blew his mind. He watched the young looking man named Devish turn himself in to something that he didn’t understand. He watched him turn into a hideous beast, and then watched the other man break his chains and turn instantly black. He watched him then turn into a huge and magnificent monster that looked like a wolf standing on its hide legs. With it all, he wanted to scream. He wanted to cry. He wanted to lose his mind.

Devish watched him turn, and hissed out with a deep and raspy screech.

Kalima responded to it with a roar that sounded like
the trumpets of elephants blaring over the Savannah. It was an impressive sound to be sure.

Kalima moved. He took two steps, but suddenly stopped. His legs locked in place and his arms froze to his sides. With it, he could not move.

Rana watched both of them change. She watched Kalima’s charge. She brought her power forward and had it grip her mind. She felt for Kalima, reached out to him, and held him directly in place.

Devish saw her do it. “That is it my dear. Hold him for me.” He smiled. He took a step forward and reached for his throat with his right hand. He almost reached him, but something suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, struck his arm with a resoundingly painful blow.

He didn’t see what it was, but when he looked left, and fell to his knees from the pain it caused him, he saw who did it. He saw Rochie standing at the top step of the stairs. “No.” He brought himself back up to his pawed feet. “I should have known that you would do this.” He cringed. He straightened himself for another attack.

An attack that would not come, for Rana turned, saw her brother, and brought her power to him next.

Instantly, Robert froze. Instantly, she locked him in place, but unfortunately, she could not hold both of them at once.

Free, Kalima took his chance. He rushed Devish in full stride, and crashed in to his chest. He wrapped his arms around him and pushed.

The two of them went back.

Devish could not resist the strength, and felt his feet being dragged backwards until he struck the brick wall behind him.

Together, they crashed through it into another room off from the main second floor hall.

Brandon made it up the stairs in time to watch them disappear in to nothing more than a cloud of dust and debris. With it, he swallowed hard. He felt amazed, but it did not last long. He had to keep going, so he turned to Rachel next.

Rana saw him come, but she could not grab him. She still had Rochie within her grip.

Robert of course already knew this. “Get the boy.” He turned to Brandon instead. “I’ll take care of my sister. Take care of Kenar’s grandson first.”

Brandon didn’t agree. “I can help.” He looked at Rachel and had trouble in wanting to do what he just offered him. He knew he could not hurt her. He could not do that to Jimmy. He could not do that for himself.

“Trust me Brandon. Go for the boy. Get him out of here.”

Brandon nodded. He saw the boy just to the right of the landing of the stairs, so he rushed him fast.

Danny saw nothing but air until the man was standing right beside him. That was when he saw his eyes glaring red. He saw the fangs. He saw his own death right along with them.

Brandon felt his fear. He felt him tense up. He tried not to laugh. “It’s okay. I’m actually a friend.” He smiled.

Danny was in no place to argue with him so he didn’t. “If you say so.”

This time, Brandon did laugh. When he finished it, he took the boy by his right arm, and pulled him from the stairs.

He didn’t make it three steps, when a sudden sharp and agonizing pain flared through his left shoulder, and continued into his chest.

Danny watched him stop. He watched a bright and shiny—what looked like a sword—come out through Brandon’s left shoulder from the back to the front.

Brandon looked down. He saw his own blood covering his shirt. “What the fuck now?” He turned to his left as he dropped Danny’s arm. He saw Vincent holding what looked like the handle of a sword—a sword that was now obviously plunged through his chest.

Vincent felt more than just pleased, he felt satisfied. He felt better than ever. “Hello brother.” He smiled. He pulled.

The pain erupted as the sword left Brandon’s chest. He screeched out with a high hissing sound as he screamed right along with it.

Danny watched him then fall to his knees.

Robert heard him scream. He looked up from where he was and saw Brandon stabbed through the chest. He saw Vincent pull out the sword. With it, he looked back to Rana. He had to do something. He just didn’t like what that was. “I’m so sorry Rana. I truly am.” He let his eyes turn blue. He let his power flow forward with force. He did not want to hurt her by throwing something at her, so instead, he felt for the wooden stairs beneath his feet. He felt for the supports that held it up, and likewise, them.

She heard him and feared what he meant.

The thought was justified, for in a few seconds, she felt the entire staircase beneath her suddenly begin to shake. Within another few seconds, she heard it crack and moan. Within another few seconds, it crashed. Both of them felt it fall and break.

Danny heard the crash. He felt the rumble. He saw the staircase, and the two people standing on it, suddenly vanish out of his sight.

Vincent heard everything too. He turned just in time to watch the staircase disappear in to nothing but a cloud of a heavy dust. He felt amazed by all of it at once.

  37

Cassandra heard the howl, and with it, all of them changed. Twenty of them all returned the call, and didn’t hesitate as they rushed from the trees, and pounced down the hill. They charged the castle’s walls.

No one saw them coming. No one even protected their side of the wall.

They hit it in full stride and climbed it without breaking their motions. When they hit the top of the wall, they did not stop. They jumped down into the open courtyard between the wall and the castle and attacked anything that moved.

Only three Nightwalkers were there. They did not stand the chance.

Two of them were jumped from the top of the wall. They had their throats torn out before they knew what hit them. The third one simply lost his head with one single blow. When they finished, the black wolves moved to the castle. They moved to the only four windows on its side, and crashed through them just as fast. When they breached the castle that was when they finally found resistance. Six Nightwalkers resisted their attack.

  38

Samantha, still in bat form, heard the howls. She saw their heat as they charged down the hill and jumped the wall. Seeing them, fearing them, she called out to the other Shades with a heavy charged shrill.

Hearing her, the other Shades left the fog. They flew with her and joined her at the castle. They flew down into the courtyard and there, they tried to fight.

  They didn’t stand the chance.

Two Shades were jumped as they flew too close to the wall. With large black wolves landing on top of them, they lost their flight and crashed with them to the floor of the yard. They were both torn apart before they ever had the chance to feel their crash.

Samantha saw this, and screeched again. She saw what they were. She saw the black fur. She saw them moving on their hind legs. She feared everything all at once.

  39

Hearing the roars, hearing the screeches of the Shades, Sandra and Kenar just turned to each other with stunned silence. They could not believe what just happened and it showed on their faces. Seeing their same looks, they looked to Sasha and grinned.

She looked down at them and almost seemed to smile. She also whined. She almost seemed to purr.

“I’ll be a dumb old man.” Kenar just shook his head. He could do nothing else.

“We have to get to the castle.” Sandra noticed Sharlia come out of the fog, a fog that had already begun to fade. “We have to charge. We have our chance.”

Sharlia agreed. “Come on my children…my family!” she shouted at the top of her lungs to everyone all at once. “Let’s take the castle!”

They charged. Twelve of them were all that they had left.

Kalima stood up after plowing Devish through the wall. He gathered himself back on his paws. Dust and concrete slid off his back.

Devish crashed in to a table after going through the wall, and found his self now lying on his back. Several stones covered his chest, so he removed them before he stood back up. “Very nice, my brother. Very nicely done in deed.” He shook some of the dirt off his head. />
Kalima shook himself off too. He looked like a dog shaking himself after a bath. When he finished, he stared Devish down. He growled. His face curled up along his snout. He straightened his shoulders and readied himself for another shot.

Devish truly laughed. In this form, it sounded more like a snort of an animal clearing its nose after being under water. It sounded low and unforgiving. When he finished it, he smiled, showing his fangs. “You are something.” He brushed off his hands. “You made other wolves.” He stepped away from what was left of the table behind him and moved to the center of the room. “Very impressive.”

Kalima growled again. This one sounded lower than the one before it.

“You knew. You knew that I would return.” He moved to his left and stopped just five or so feet in front of the wolf. “You prepared for all of this.”

Kalima huffed. A raspy growl rolled within it.

Devish nodded. “Very impressive in deed.” He smiled again as he charged. He moved. He grabbed Kalima just beneath his arms, and lifted him up.

Kalima grabbed his shoulders firmly and managed to cause enough pain in his arms that Devish was not able to keep his grip.

Devish screeched from the pain. He dropped his arms, but he had to do something, so instead, he swung his left arm back towards the wolf.

Kalima expected it, and blocked the swing. He was able to grab his arm below the elbow, and with it firmly in his claws; he took a step back.

  He swung.

Devish lost his feet, and being off them, he flew backwards towards the hole that they just crashed through, and smacked the same wall at an angle that made him slide down it to the floor. Because it didn’t give way, the pain was immense. The pain was sharp. He screamed from the impact.
