The Billionaire's Bid (Mercury Billionaires Book 2)
Page 22
The old guy in the local store had a payphone tucked away in a small kiosk. We squeezed in and I dialed my uncle’s number. There was barely enough room for the two of us. I put her arm around Jessie’s waist and pulled her closer.
He sounded mightily relieved to hear my voice.
“Where the heck are you, Adam? I’m going to send a helicopter to bring you home right now”
We hadn’t even thought to ask the guy in the store the name of the island or the town. I looked at Jessie and tried to read her mind. She smiled at me and I felt my heart leap with an insane thought.
I knew she was thinking it too.
“Adam! Where the hell are you? You’re needed back here to sign some papers and go to a meeting with a business delegation from Asia. Your trip is officially over as of now.”
I carried on looking at Jessie and she carried on smiling. Her eyes had a bright new light in them that I had never seen in anyone before. I was sure that mine did too, as our new-found happiness reflected off one of us onto the other and back again.
The feeling of being at the start of something special and crazy sprung up in my heart and made me smile back at her like a madman. My uncle said something else but I never heard a word of it.
She grabbed my hand that was holding on to the phone and we hung up together before embracing right there in the cramped little phone booth. Our sense of freedom was now complete.

Adam eventually hung up the phone on his uncle with my help and we both burst out laughing.
The guy in the shop must have thought we were utterly insane as we laughed and hugged in the tiny kiosk of his modest store on an island whose name neither of us knew.
“Shall we call your brother now?”
“Yeah, but don’t tell him where we are.”
“Even we don’t know where we are.”
“There’s no need to tell any lies then.”
The conversation with Joe was fine. Once he had got over the excitement of finding out that we were alright he was quite happy to stay in the dark about where we were.
“You guys stay safe. Get in touch when…when you are ready to come back. I’m still in Buenos Aires.”
“We will.” We shouted it in unison and the store owner looked at us even more strangely. We were probably his most memorable customers of the year. Possibly his only customers by the look of it.
Standing out on the lonely street again and looking out at the immense sea, a feeling of panic briefly washed over me.
“Adam, what are we doing?” I waved my arms around to show him the empty, lifeless town that was the main place in a virtually empty, lifeless island. “What are going to do in this godforsaken place?”
The billionaire who had decided to take a step back from his wealth and his business empire to be along alone with me just shrugged and raised an eyebrow. He was more relaxed and happier than I had ever seen him.
“We’ll just live life and be together.”
“Race you to the beach.” I laughed and ran off, leaving Adam to chase after me. Life had turned completely upside down in the last few days and it was time to take advantage of every single moment that we had together.
