Maddie leans into Dominic as she listens to him talk about his work as they walk. She hardly knows what he’s saying, but could listen to him talk hours. His voice was so deep and soothing.
“And that building over there, too.” Dominic says, pointing to an old warehouse. “We’ll tear it down and build some big offices, we’re going to really get this town going.”
Maddie smiles, placing her palm on her belly.
“And what about him, you going to hire our baby as your vice president?” She laughs jokingly, wrapping her arm around Dominic’s waist before feeling her phone vibrate in her pocket.
She pulls it out. Her smile disappearing as she reads her text.
Get home now.
Chapter 8
“Maddie, you don’t have to go.” Dominic pleads as the stretch limo pulls up in front of her and Dennis’s apartment. “Let me take you to my hotel room and I can come back and get your stuff.”
“No, Dominic.” She says as she unbuckles her seat belt.
She turns to look him in the eyes, before reaching up and cupping his cheek with her palm.
“I promise I’ll find a way to break it off soon, but I just have to get some things together and right first.” She whispers to him before leaning in and placing a kiss on his soft lips.
She gets out of the car, before turning back to Dominic and smiling softly.
“I’m sorry about your surprise.” She says quietly. “But I had a really nice time.”
Maddie’s heart pounds as she reaches her and Dennis’s front door. She grabs the knob, taking a deep breath before turning it and hearing it click open.
She walks in, blindly reaching over to the wall to flip the switch and turn on the lights.
“Dennis? Are you home?” She asks, looking over her apartment before spotting her boyfriend sitting at the dining room table. “Hi, baby.” She whispers to him, walking over.
“Where were you?” He asks, his cold brown eyes looking up at her.
“I… I had to work late, Dennis. I was working.” Maddie says, a pit forming in her stomach.
“Working?” He asks, standing up from his chair. “Then why did I get a text from my cousin saying he saw you downtown getting out of a limo with some guy? You work downtown now?”
“Dennis, I don’t know what you’re….” Maddie starts before her words are cut off by a hard slap across her face.
“You think I don’t know what you’re up to?” He says, pushing her back against the wall. “Who is that white guy you’re fucking, Maddie? Who is he?”
“Dennis, please!” She begs as Dennis’s hand connects with her face once again.
The back of Maddie’s head hits the wall and she squeezes her eyes shut as she lets her back slide down, closing her knees against her chest as her butt hits the floor.
“Dennis, I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Please!” She begs as her boyfriend’s knee hits her cheek, her head denting the drywall behind her.
“You’re sorry?” Dennis yells. “What do I have to keep telling you, Maddie?” He asks, stepping on her purse before kicking it to the side. “You wouldn’t have to apologize so much if you weren’t always fucking up!”
“Please stop! Please stop!” Maddie begs as Dennis’s foot connects with her thigh. “Please, Dennis! I’m pregnant! Please stop kicking me!”
“Pregnant!” Dennis shouts, reaching down and gabbing Maddie by her hair. “Well I know it ain’t mine!”
“Dennis, don’t do this!” Maddie cries as she’s dragged across the carpet. “Please, baby! Please!”

Dominic watches as Maddie walks into her apartment before facing forward and resting his head in his hand.
“Why do I keep letting her get away?” He whispers to himself , before knocking on the window between him and his driver, letting him know it’s okay to drive away.
He hears his phone ring and looks down to where it’s glowing on the dark leather seat before picking it up. It’s Maddie.
“Baby?” He answers hearing banging in the background. He feels the car begin to roll and knocks on the window once more to get his driver to halt. “Maddie, I’m still outside. You need me?”
He gets no response but the muffled banging before he hears a deep man’s voice shout “You wouldn’t have to apologize so much if you weren’t always fucking up!”.
Dominic drops his phone in a panic before sliding over on the seat and throwing the car’s door open. He runs up to the apartment, opening the glass front door before running up the stairs.
“Maddie!?” He calls, not knowing her unit number before he hears a loud thud.
He turns around, running toward the last unit on the left as the sobs from Maddie grow louder, making him sick to his stomach.
Dominic bangs on the door, before grabbing the knob and turning it, letting himself in.
“What are you doing?” He shouts, his blue eyes widening as he sees Maddie laying in the middle of the floor, a sobbing mess.
“You!” Dennis shouts, his voice deep. “You’re the one, huh?”
Dennis runs over to Dominic before pushing him up against the wall by his jacket.
“It’s yours isn’t it?” Dennis asks, his dark eyes focusing in.
Dominic pushes him away before kicking Dennis in the shin.
“Yeah, it’s mine, and she’s mine, too!” Dominic shouts, straddling Dennis before he can get up off the ground. “And don’t you ever fucking touch her again!”
Dominic lands a closed fist hit on Dennis’s cheek before being pushed away. Dennis stands up, looking down on Dominic before kicking him in the side.
“You can have that dirty bitch.” He spits at her before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He walks out, slamming the door behind him.
Dominic crawls over to Maddie before cupping her face with his hand and helping her sit up. She sobs, sore and scared as she sits up and Dominic wraps his arms around her.
“It’s okay, baby. Everything’s okay.” He whispers into her ear as he rocks them back and forth.
Chapter 9
Maddie huffs, leaning back to stretch before rubbing her palm over her big swollen belly. She’s been on her feet all day and she sure is tired.
“Order up!” She hears the cook shout from the kitchen.
She sighs, puffing her cheeks before slowly walking over to the window and getting the plate.
“You shouldn’t work so hard!” The cook shouts to her as she waddles away with the order.
Maddie smiles as she reaches her favorite customer, setting the plate down in front of him.
“My babies and my breakfast!” Dominic smiles, picking up his fork and stabbing it into a hashbrown. “Thank you.”
“I can’t wait until my shift is over.” Maddie sighs as she sits down in her and Dominic’s booth across from him. “This day is just never ending.”
“Yeah, I can’t to get you back to the hotel and into a nice warm bath.” Dominic whispers to her, as he reaches for the ketchup.
Maddie reaches across the table, picking up a hashbrown from Dominic’s plate before popping it into her mouth.
“My big fat ass keeps knocking stuff over.” She says, chewing the potato before swallowing. “And my feet hurt.”
Dominic laughs, putting down his fork on his napkin.
“Well I think you look so beautiful.” He whispers, his blue eyes looking deeply into her green ones.
Dominic stands up, grabbing Maddie’s hand and helping her stand to her feet as well.
“You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, Maddie.” He whispers, holding her hand. “And I never did get to give you that surprise.”
He looks down as he reaches in his jacket pocket before pulling out a small velvet box.
“Dominic…” Maddie whispers, watching as he gets down on one knee.
“Maddie, let me give you everything.” He whispers, looking up past her pregnant belly into her welling eyes. “I’ve known you had to be my wife si
nce the first moment I laid my eyes on you.”
Maddie trembles as Dominic opens the velvet box.
“Yes, Dominic, yes, of course!” She whispers, trembling as her blue eyed fiancé picks the ruby ring up from its resting place before sliding it down her finger. It fits perfectly.
Dominic stands, wrapping his arms around Maddie before placing his hands on her belly. He rests his lips on her forehead, kissing her gently before letting a soft smile grow across his face.
“Well look at that.” Helen whispers to her cook, watching out of the kitchen window. “Maybe it won’t be so bad after all.”

Chapter 1
She sits at the table of her breakfast nook, in the corner of her living room, looking out of the window at the clear blue sky as she taps the end of her blue inked pen on the table top.
She smiles to herself, rolling the plastic tube in her fingers before slowly scrolling, in delicate lettering, a name across the center of a small, white envelope. She reaches across the little table, picking an embossed card out of her pile.
Finally after three long years of engagement, they have picked a date for their wedding. She almost thought it was never going to happen.
The fluttering in her stomach had yet to subside since the moment she spotted the small package in her post box early this morning, but finally, as she places the very last invitation into it’s envelope, she can relax.
Her wedding wouldn’t be large, maybe 150 of her closest friends and family to fill the hall, but she wanted it to be perfect. Since she was a little girl she had been planning these moments and finally, finally years of waiting they were happening.
She met him 8 years ago at the tender age of 21.
Fresh out of community college, she had just barely started her first full-time job. It was a modest job, despite her education- a waitressing gig at a local café.
He came in nearly every day for months before finally his flirting evolved into him asking her out, and after that, it took years for him to finally ask her to be his bride.
But now… now it was finally happening, and nothing could ever stand in the way of her happily ever after.
Chapter 2
Amber pulls her long, blonde curls away from her face, securing them behind her head with a nylon band.
She sighs as she picks up a cool, wet cloth from the sink- ringing the water out before patting the damp cloth across her warm, pink cheeks.
She hears the lock of the front door turn and the door creak across the floor as their front entrance is opened.
“Thomas?” She calls out, tossing the damp cloth back into the porcelain sink before stepping backwards in the small bathroom and poking her head out of the narrow doorway.
“Hey.” He says tossing his leather bag onto the chair beside their coat rack.
The man steps out of his shoes as he walks out of the porch, his white socks sinking into the pale beige carpet.
“You’ll never guess what finally came today.” She says smiling, the butterflies in her stomach returning as she walks up to meet her fiancé.
She wraps her arms around him and rubs the tips of her fingers over his bald scalp.
“What?” He says, exasperated as he rubs the heels of his palms over his light brown eyes.
“Our wedding invitations finally came.” She whispers into his ear.
“Oh, is that all?” He says, pulling away from her to walking into their little kitchen.
Amber follows him, quietly watching as Thomas pours himself a glass of water from the tap.
“Well, do you want to look at them?” She asks, watching her fiancé lift the clear glass to his lips and take a sip.
“Nah.” He swallows, as he leans back against the counter. “I don’t really care that much.”
Amber’s heart sinks in her chest.
“These are our wedding invitations.” She whispers to him from across the room. “I just want to make sure you’re happy with the ones I picked before I send them out.”
He nods his head, his brown eyes shifting down to the grey tiles on the floor.
“I’m marrying you, Amber.” He says, placing the transparent glass cup on the granite countertop. “Isn’t that enough?”
She bites her bottom lips, her soft, blue eyes slowly welling up. She sighs, shaking away her tears before slowly looking back up at her fiancé.
“You’re right.” She says, walking over to him and wrapping her thin arms around his neck. “I’m sorry, I’m just so excited to finally be your wife.”
Chapter 3
Her face hot and chest heaving, she watches as Thomas rolls off of her back onto his side of the bed. Her body tingles as she sits up on her elbows and turns her neck to look at him.
“You gunna be home for supper, baby?” She asks softly, reaching over and gently dragging the pads of her fingers over his back. “Or are you going back to work soon?”
“Just came home for a nap.” He says, his deep voice muffled slightly by the plush pillow.
“Okay, just wondering.” She starts, rolling over onto her side as she runs her soft palm over his waist. “Because Leah wants to take me out later… maybe hit up a club, you know how she is, always crazy…”
“Shh.” He interrupts, lifting his head off the pillow and turning to look at her. “I came home to nap, not talk.”
“Sorry, baby.” She whispers as she rolls out of bed.
She quietly makes her way out of their little bedroom before turning down the hall. She walks into the bathroom, grabbing the rag out of the sink before turning on the tap of hot water in the shower.
Amber sits on the edge of the tub, the cool porcelain chilling her hot, sweaty skin, as her unfocused eyes watch the water run.
She wets the rag in the warm water before gently wiping it over her sensitive sex, cleaning away the love they just made.
She rinses the rag, letting the soiled water fall down the drain before she reaches down and plugs the tub.
She slides down as the water fills, relaxing into the tubs curved walls.
“The stress of the wedding is getting to us, I think.” She whispers to herself as she swirls her finger tips in the warm water. “But it will be over soon, then we can get back to normal.”
She dips a puffy loofa into the hot water before reaching over to grab a bottle of sweet smelling gel from the little shelf beside her before lathering the soap on her chest with care.
Amber always knew marriage would be a give and take, but lately it seems like she’s the only one who’s doing the giving.
Chapter 4
“Leah, I really don’t think I can afford to eat here.” Amber whispers into her friend’s ear.
“It’ll work, I promise,” She says, looking around the cramped room as she twists one of her silver, dangling earrings. “So fancy though, right?”
“We should go, seriously, look at this menu, the drinks are more than I’m used to paying for my entire meal.” Amber says, brushing her fingers over the tables finished wood.
“It’s going to work, trust me.” Leah says. “See, we’re pretty ladies, and this place is filled with men who can afford to pay for us.” She picks up her glass to take a sip of her rum and coke. “Don’t worry about a thing.” She says, smiling softly to a man watching them at the bar. “We work our magic and dinner is free.”
“Oh, okay.” Amber says, placing the straw from her soda into her mouth and taking a sip. “So this is what’s going on tonight…”
“You kno
w I need my girl for support!” Leah says, leaning into Amber’s shoulder. “And I know you’re engaged, but they don’t need to know that.”
