Dani’s Diary

‘It’s great to see them together, isn’t it?’ Lalita said as the grans went on ahead of us. ‘It’s kind of like—’

She stopped, looking a bit awkward. But I thought I could guess what she’d been going to say.

‘You mean, it’s almost like watching ourselves, like we could be when we’re older?’ I finished for her.

Lalita nodded. ‘Except that we’re not friends like they are.’

‘Maybe we could be,’ I said, feeling awkward too.

  ‘Maybe,’ Lalita agreed.

We smiled hesitantly at each other.

And you know what? I have a secret feeling that, one day, Lalita and I will be friends.

  Just like our grans.
