  “Are you alive?” he asked.

“I should ask you the same question.”

“Pick me up, we’ll head back to Aspen,” I said and gave him the address.

  Chapter 7

There were times when I really missed my life as a vampire hunter, not because I still hated vampires, but because sometimes I felt that my life didn’t have purpose.

I didn’t go back to the gym. Phil had been right – I couldn’t keep leaving him in the dark like that. I cancelled my students and he put an ad in the paper for a shooting instructor.

I had no idea what I was going to do with my life now, but at least I was making decisions that were for the better. I was thinking of other people and trying to make sure that my life didn’t affect anyone else’s in a bad way.

After the fight Blade had been rushed to emergency services and the silver bullet had been removed. It had had the strangest effect on him, eating at his flesh like a poison instead of the normal damage, but once it was out he was going to be okay.

I doubted he wanted much to do with me anymore and he was someone I was grateful for, but realized I had to cut loose.

I needed Connor. We weren’t exactly on the best terms yet, but I’d moved back home and maybe with time we could work out our differences. It would help if my life didn’t keep interfering with our relationship.

I hoped I could keep it that way.

Carl didn’t speak to me. He was still mad about being a vampire now and I didn’t blame him. I couldn’t imagine what it was like to have to give up sunlight and most of your human friends because our life just didn’t fit anymore. I hoped that at some point he could come to forgive me, but I doubted that was going to happen soon.

But as Aspen said, time heals all wounds, and she and I could get better after what had happened to us, so could he. I wasn’t sure if I believed it, but it was sweet of her.

She didn’t know how killers thought though, and Carl was more killer than anything else.

The only thing I was going to focus on was taking my life one day at a time, taking it slow and not doing anything that I was going to regret, or anything that was going to come back and haunt me.

Sometimes that seemed like a full-time job all in itself.
