EPILOGUE
“Boys get back here.” Little heathens were just as hardheaded as their mom. The little bundle in my arms kicked her feet and demanded to get down.
“You wanna go play with your brothers?” I placed my little Michaela down on the ground in the pasture so she could go run with her older brothers. Her mom sat on the picnic blanket watching us with a smile, her hand rubbing the mound of her very pregnant belly.
Keeping a keen eye on my children I dropped down next to their mother.
“How’re you feeling sweetheart?”
“We’re coming right along, six days and counting.”
I leaned over and kissed my baby; four kids in five years I couldn’t be happier. The twins were four years old now, Caleb and Brady, two rough and tumble boys who were joined one year later by a sister who had me wrapped completely around her little finger. I was happier than I’d ever thought possible; my life with wife and kids was more exciting than any assignment I’d ever been on. Where I’d once believed that I would miss that life, that I’d never be able to settle down in this place or find any pleasure in a life like this, I now couldn’t imagine my life any other way. Couldn’t imagine a world without them without her loving her, needing her, and holding her, waking up to that face everyday. I was grateful for every day I had with them, for all the love and beauty they brought to my life.
“Look at your little hellion what is she doing?” I watched my daughter with love and admiration in my heart, always trying to keep up with the boys.
“She’s trying to climb that tree is what she’s doing.”
“Shit I better go get her before she hurt herself.” I reached my little princess just in time to save her from a fall.
“Daddy no.” Those were her new favorite words ‘daddy no’.
“You can’t climb up there Micki you’re too little.”
“Up.” She lifted her arms up to me for me to lift her into the tree. Shit, I picked her up and let her reach her hand to the low hanging leaves and that seemed to satisfy her. My boys were playing cowboys and Indians with their little twig pistols. The sun was shining brightly in the midday sky as I heard the sound of an engine shutting off signaling the arrival of Tracy and her husband Corey with their two boys, coming to join us for our weekly family picnic. Life is good, it’s complete, there’s not a day that go by when I don’t say a prayer of thanks that my little tease hadn’t given up.
