“Esther and I will be running the route.” Jacob angled his eyes to Esther. “We’ll make a gut team.”

Esther nodded. “We’ll have the route down in no time.”

“I’m sure you’ll have no problem,” Daed chimed in. He took a sip of his kaffi. “Gut kaffi hits the spot.” He nodded towards the pitcher of cream. “Help yourself to extra sugar and cream, Jacob. His brow arched. Makes a mighty gut drink. We like our kaffi extra sweet around here.”

Jacob grabbed the sugar, spooned two teaspoons into his kaffi, then added cream. Destined to like it, Jacob said, “I know I’ll like it since it is kaffi at the Miller’s haus.” One sip and his eyes widened. “Pretty gut.”

Esther blushed. “That’s how I like it too.” She lifted her legs, played footsies again. Her eyes twinkled under the hanging lantern.

Daed nodded to the food. Let’s have a second helping. There’s plenty there for five more families.”

Esther agreed, grabbed the biscuit platter, and placed one on her plate before passing it. “We always eat well.”

Together, as a family, they enjoyed the meal, sharing the Amish tradition of praising Gott in the storm. The Amish way. The real way.

An hour later, they were boxing donuts up at the bakery, and Jacob helped himself to an orange cream Whoopie pie and thought it pleased his palate. This was a great place to work.

The carriage buggy loaded, Jacob and Esther were off to deliver donuts to the stores that opened early. Quietly and unrehearsed, Jacob slid his right hand over, laced his fingers with hers, squeezed tightly. “Just wanted you to know I care about you.”

“What a powerful grip.” She giggled, feeling the hotness that absorbed her cheeks. “You’re so cute.”

“I wanted to transfer some warmness in those sad eyes of yours,” he said empathetically. “I don’t like seeing my lady depressed, but I can understand why you are at a time like this.”

“Jah, it’s gonna be hard, but we’ll make it.”

Together, as the dawn broke through, pink and deep orange hues gently rolling over the blackness of night, they rode as a couple. A team. And one day, they’d be a couple. Under Gott, the Master, the One Who never forgot how to sooth an open wound.

  With love.

  The End

  ~A Note from Ms. Yoder~

I hope you enjoyed the Whoopie Pie Bakers serial. I chose to end the book here, and not dwell on the funerals since the Amish do not dwell on them, for those who have passed are with the Lord. What a wunderbar place to be!
