27 By agreeing to use the West Coast route, Mackinnon had denied himself the chance to get S to do what would have been most useful to him commercially: to establish trading posts for his company between Mombassa and Lake Victoria. In 1189o, Leopold was lucky to be bailed out by the Belgian government after a decade of losses on the Congo, but Mackinnon knew he could not expect the same largesse from any British cabinet. 71 For S's and DS's statements that the child was the grandson of a cousin see S to Mrs Bruce 2.10.1896 NLS, and DS to Lady Hills Johnes 11.oz.1896 National Library of Wales; in DS to S n.d. but early 1903, DS shows she believed that the boy's father had died in 2895 or early 1896. The case for Denzil Stanley being the grandson of Stanley's half-sister, Emma, rests largely on the word of Lucy M. Jones, the former matron of H.M. Stanley Hospital, St Asaph, author of H.M. Stanley and Wales (11972), a booklet which added greatly to public knowledge of Stanley's Welsh family. It was published to coincide with an exhibition at St Asaph Cathedral for which the Stanley family provided original material. Her revelation about Denzil's identity is not in her booklet. However, she got to know Mrs Denzil Stanley at this time and perhaps learned from her about Denzil's origins. There is a compelling note in the dependable Miss Jones's hand in the Flintshire Archives: 'Denzil's mother, Elizabeth Ann, was a daughter of Stanley's sister, Emma. I met Denzil's brother, the late David Bartlett [actually David Henry Bartley] on several occasions...' So perhaps David H. Bartley told Miss Jones about Denzil's parentage. Elizabeth Ann Hughes was indeed the daughter of Stanley's halfsister Emma (see my note 36 of Chap One for the possibility that she was his whole sister. Emma married Llewelyn Hughes in 1872). According to Stanley's diary (SD 115.09.11896) Denzil was born on z Jun 1895, at which time Elizabeth Ann Hughes was zz and unmarried (I could find no earlier marriage certificate). She married David Bartley in 119011. Bob Owen, the local historian, thinks it significant that though David Bartley was a poorly paid tailor, in 1904 after Stanley's death he and Elizabeth were able to open a grocer's shop, acquire a substantial house and later buy a row of terraced houses and employ a housekeeper and maid - information from a 11942 obituary cutting for Elizabeth Ann Bartley in Flintshire Archives. The Bartleys were not beneficiaries in Stanley's will, so a gift seems to have been managed in some other way. Stanley or Dorothy obliterated all references to Denzil's identity in SD 112, 113 Jul 1896. The truth was a well-kept family secret since Gwyn Bartley, D.H.Bartley's solicitor son, was unaware of it when I spoke to him. I am much indebted to Bob Owen for his help and ideas on this subject.
