Adrenaline Rush

“Look at what you’ve done,” he said as I approached. “You saved all these people.” His head swayed side to side then looked at me. “We’ve done all we can here. It’s time to go. The chopper is waiting for us.”

My whole body ached with sadness for Sterling’s kids. I asked God to send them a million blessings so they could heal.

The sun shone hard on the baseball field now and the agents had started leading groups of kids to waiting busses to be transported somewhere they could be thoroughly evaluated and hopefully helped.

“It’s unbelievable, isn’t it?” I said, looking at the many faces on the field. “That one man could ruin so many lives.”

“Isn’t it unbelievable,” Jeremy said, “That one girl could save so many lives?”

I turned to look at him. The smile on his face was somewhat grim.

“What we have to do as spies seems so horrible until you see something like this.” I frowned. “I didn’t think I’d ever come out of there, Jeremy. To my shame, I had given up. I even gave up on God for a while.”

“That’s understandable. You just experienced something no one should ever experience.”

“I lost my faith, something I thought I would never do.”

“But you found it again,” he said. “We all struggle at times in our lives. It’s good that you rallied. As long as you always rally, you’ll be fine. Just don’t accept such dangerous missions from now on. Take it easy. You’ve shown everyone you’re worthy—now you can let others take missions like these.”

I looked back over the field. “You know I can’t promise that. It seems the scarier the case, the greater the impact I can have. I know I’m supposed to be a spy. I don’t want to be any ordinary spy. I want to be the best. While my mind is telling me to quit, my heart, soul, and spirit are telling me I’m doing exactly what I should be doing.”

He nodded, his mouth forming a smile. I had a hard time looking away from his lips. I wanted mine to be pressed to his, but that couldn’t be. He was my handler.

“Someone told me once I was destined to save the world. And while I don’t know I believe that, I do know the only way it might happen is one mission at a time.”

Jeremy put his arm around my shoulders, and I closed my eyes, enjoying the tingle it sent through my body. I put my arm around his waist, pulling him in tight, and we headed for the chopper to get ready for our next mission together. I was the luckiest girl alive.
