He returned home from work one day to find Brock sitting with Elaina, having tea. His first feeling was one of jealousy, but it quickly faded when she rose and ran to give him a welcome home hug and kiss, even in front of Brock. He noticed Brock smile when he saw it. The envy quickly fled and he greeted his friend warmly.
“I love the house,” Brock said.
Pete laughed. “It takes a woman to make your life better and easier. I would have lived in that old, drafty place my whole life if it hadn’t been for Elaina. I didn’t see the house the way she did. And then I realized I didn’t need all that livestock and all those acres of land to survive, the way my parents had.
““Yep,” he said, taking his wife’s hand. “You need to get yourself one of these.”
“I agree, and I feel it’s time. My problem is I don’t want a woman to agree to marry me, just because I’m wealthy. I want what you have, Pete, someone who’ll love you even when they think you have next to nothing.”
Pete squeezed Elaina’s hand. “So, my wife will act as your matchmaker?”
“She’s agreed to it. We’re just trying to figure out how to accomplish the feat.”
“My parents are coming for a visit in the spring and I can’t wait for them to meet Pete,” Elaina said. “My only worry is his dangerous job. I fret all the time that some criminal will shoot him when he’s at work.”
“The town’s changing, Elaina. He’ll be fine, and he has friends willing to help him,” Brock said. “But I’d give him a job at the bank, if he wanted one.”
“I’m afraid I’d be bored silly,” Pete said. “I’m happy right where I am.”
Elaina handed Brock an envelope. “Here’s Sarah’s address. You can begin writing to her, but use the bank’s address. For now, you're just a bank teller. We’ll think up the rest later. First, let’s get her here.”
After Brock had left, Pete took Elaina into his arms. “I love you,” he said. He'd made a vow to tell her that at least once a day.
“And I love you,” she replied.
“How's Agnes working out?”
“Great. She’s just made us another great dinner. She’s also teaching me how to cook and bake,” Elaina said.
“Hopefully you’ll never need it. Agnes is a widow with five children. She needs the money, and I want you to be happy doing nothing…except matchmaking.” Pete said.
He squeezed her to him in a bear hug. “I want every single man in town to have the happiness I’ve found with you, Elaina. And the first thing I’ll do when Sarah gets here is to thank her for giving you her train ticket.
