Evil Genius 2: Becoming the Apex Supervillain

There was an inkling of pride within me to see it. I was just so proud of the Shadow Knight for training an apprentice to be halfway competent for once.

But I was going to have to make some adjustments to my plan.

I checked the window and realized that it was unlatched, so I waited for the correct time to act. Soon the future was correct for me, so I slid open the glass. The window made a faint squeak that drew the Silver Squire’s attention immediately, and I glimpsed a flash of hopefulness in his eyes. Despite his trained wariness, he was still hoping that it would be Anna who entered through his window. He hadn’t lunged towards me yet because he hadn’t wanted to scare her or hurt her.

  What a fool.

I always had a knife or seven on me, so I slashed open the screen and then flung his sweet little girlfriend’s head through the window.

“Wha--” the senseless question died in his throat. “Anna!” he screamed as his face filled with terror.

What the young man probably should have done was leap out of the window and fight me, and that was one of the many outcomes I saw before opening the window. However, this version of the Silver Squire was too far in love, and so he staggered from his bed and dropped to the ground, speechless with horror.

Now I could just savor the scene without fear of a battle.

The young man’s hand shook as he reached for his lover’s head, and then he touched her bloodied hair as he opened his mouth to scream.

As I had told Anna a few minutes ago, I didn’t particularly want him to make enough noise to wake his parents up and cause them to come investigate, since they would surely suffer much more from surviving the violent murder of their son. And the total amount of human suffering caused was one of my primary metrics for success as a supervillain. So, before Silver Squire could do anything else, I rolled fully into the room.

“Taaadaaa!” I announced as I made a slight bow.

“Waaa--” he gasped, but as his head jolted up to look at me, I swung my arm down and slashed my knife across his neck.

“Too bad, so sad,” I whispered to him as his eyes opened wide with horror. “Don’t worry though, kiddo, you didn’t suffer nearly as much as poor Anna did.”

“Grruugghh.” He reached up to clutch his throat, and the blood spurted through his fingers and soaked the plush carpet of his bedroom. He must have known he was about to die, but even as he slumped to the floor he desperately tried to reach for Anna’s severed head.

“Oh, yes, you can have this for a few moments. Like I said, I already had my fun with her.” With a short laugh, I nudged Anna’s head just across the room and out of his reach.

“Woops!” I laughed. “I kicked it the wrong way. Never was good at soccer. More of a curling fan, actually.”

“Whhhh.” His arm dropped listlessly, and then he gave one last gargle and died.

Now that he was dead, I picked up Anna’s head again and considered where to put it to best spice up the crime scene. The ideal location was obviously on his dick for a final blowjob, but I would prefer not to go anywhere near the Silver Squire’s groin.

Instead, I settled on cradling her head in his arms, with him bent down to kiss her. Not as grisly as I might have liked, but it was tragic and poetic in a way I thought would make for an appealing news story. And, of course, it was well known that Timothy Jenkins, the young male victim, was also known as Silver Squire, apprentice to the Shadow Knight. Oh, this incident and all the theories about it would be front page news for weeks.

The Shadow Knight would be absolutely humiliated.

I exited the room the way I came in, returned to my car, and started driving home. I almost opened my mouth to talk to Anna again, but then I recalled I’d left the poor dear back in the arms of her lover, so I turned the radio on to create some sort of conversation. I always liked listening to the news, mostly crime stories, both for inspiration and as an ego boost when I heard about how lame and unoriginal other supervillains’ achievements were. Sure enough, on my favorite channel, they were currently discussing a spectacular failure on the part of a supervillain whose lair had been raided.

As I replayed the glorious scene of Silver Squire’s last few moments on earth in my head I half-listened to the melodramatic narrative on the radio and caught a few snippets. “Nanobots gone”… “the amusement park has had security problems in the past”… “hard to comprehend”… “this extremely violent incident”… “Mayhem dead.”

“Wait, what?” I asked myself aloud, and then I started paying more attention to the news report. Mayhem had been like a pathetic pale imitation of me. I don’t think he really understood me though. And he didn’t have any superpowers, but even if he wasn’t particularly impressive as a supervillain the guy did try hard and had showed signs of potential.

I wondered what superhero had nipped him. That was a rarity. He must have really, really pissed someone off or just gotten really unlucky in the heat of a fight. Sometimes a weapon slipped, or a superpower was accidentally discharged, and that was that.

Then, as more details were described, I realized that Mayhem’s death hadn’t been an accident at all. In fact, he and all his henchmen, including most notably the infamously promiscuous Electra and the cartoonishly stupid Behemoth, had seemingly been strategically mowed down in their own lair. With bullets, not superpowers, which made it hard to identify the perpetrators.

  Well, well, well. How entertaining.

“This shocking mass murder is especially difficult to fathom due to the identities of the victims,” the reporter stated. “They were all known supervillains, including Mayhem, who recently made headlines for his horrific attacks on the Grayville Children’s Center and the Grayville Opera House. Furthermore, those people who were recovered from the scene alive are Mayhem’s victims, who are now receiving treatment for the brain damage that he inflicted upon them. It seems obvious that whoever was responsible for this raid intentionally spared the innocent. And there are not many ordinary humans who would be capable of taking on the impressive lineup of supervillains that Mayhem had recruited to staff his team and who would be able to walk away from a showdown like this with them. All of these factors point to a superhero, or more likely multiple superheroes, as the perpetrators. Yet a mass murder like this would be completely out of keeping with the superhero ethos. So many important questions remain in the wake of this violent event. Firstly, how was someone able to accomplish this? Who were these people? And why would they do such a thing? What were their motivations? After the break, a special guest, Dr. Patricia Evans, a psychologist specializing in supers, will be joining us to discuss these questions and more.”

The segment cut to a commercial about supposedly super proof home security systems. That was a pretty laughable concept, but I guess regular people had to try to make themselves feel better somehow.

I had to admit, I was impressed by the sheer nerve of whoever had gunned down Mayhem and company in cold blood like that. They sounded like efficient operators. It certainly wasn’t something the Shadow Knight would ever have done, under any circumstances, although I had no doubt he probably often fantasized about letting loose like that. It was just his folly to have chosen a career path that limited his options so much.

And the other lesser superheroes in Grayville not only wouldn’t kill supervillains, they probably couldn’t have killed so many of them at once even if they tried.

It looked like there was someone new in town for me to play with.

I couldn’t wait to meet them.
