  She squirmed. “So wet.”

“Finger your pussy while you suck my cock.”

Avery’s pussy throbbed at his words. How could she have been so neglectful? She kept one hand balanced on his thigh and plunged the other into her panties.

“Touch your clit, Avery.” He fucked her mouth as he talked, hands guiding her movements.

She did, moaning against him as a blazing heat shot through her body.

  “Feel good, baby?”

It did. It really did. But she couldn’t answer him, not with his cock in her mouth. She groaned in agreement instead.

  “Good. Pinch your clit, Avery.”

She did, and this time the sensation was so intense she forgot to breathe.

“Now stick your finger in your pussy and push it in and out.”

Avery was good at following directions, and she angled her hips to get the best friction she could. If she did it just right, her palm rubbed her clit. She kept up fingering her pussy and sucking his cock until she felt her climax build inside her. It was hard to control her movements on his cock, though, when she was so focused on riding her fingers.

Chase groaned and growled above her, and she wondered if they would finish at the same time. She hoped so. Her fingers were covered in her cream and she rotated her hips, pushing herself toward orgasm.

Avery was right on the edge, a breath away from her release when he yanked her up by the hair and backed her to the bed. She went willingly, braced for the hard fucking she hoped he’d give her.

She gasped as his cock breached her entrance, stretching her with a sensation that bordered on pain but was all pleasure. Then he began to fuck her, pushing into her deeper than she’d ever thought possible and pulling out so far she wanted to scream in protest. Thrust after thrust drove her hard, faster toward her climax.

“Come now,” he said, seizing her hair in his giant fist and pulling her up until her lips almost touched his. “Come, for me, Avery.”

She felt the orgasm reach out to take her, and...

Avery woke, dripping with sweat, her hand clutched between her legs, with no Chase in sight. That’s when she realized it. Chase Randall was driving her crazy, and she couldn’t just ignore him. The man had to go.

He hadn’t come back to harass her, but he was constantly outside, flaunting that amazing body and forcing her to watch him through her binoculars. She’d realized how silly it was to imagine that he could see her from so far away with only a sliver of curtain pulled aside from the window. Once she’d decided it was safe to spy on him again, she realized he’d taken up sunbathing, of all things, just lying out there in the sun in only his shorts. Sometimes he’d go for a dip in the lake and she had to watch him emerge from the water dripping wet. She’d seriously earned her degree in drooling over the last couple of days.

Several times, they’d both been outside at the same time, and he’d raised a hand in greeting. She’d ignored him. Once he’d raised a bottle in what looked like an offer and she’d been tempted to forget her suspicion of him. Fortunately, she’d come to her senses.

Then there were the nights. She couldn’t sleep without dreaming about him. And her vibrator. It was a good thing she’d stocked up on batteries. The only thing that was going great was her writing. While it was typical for her to get stuck on a scene now and then, the words had been flowing like crazy over the last few days. There was even that one night when she didn’t go to bed at all because her characters wouldn’t shut up.

Besides facilitating a better-than-ever connection with her muse, though, Chase was fucking up her life. Avery peeled herself out of bed and let Roscoe out for his morning potty run. Then, she headed to the shower. She couldn’t even be bothered to stop for her caffeine fix. Avery had to figure out what was up with Chase before it drove her crazy.

Lila was clearly surprised to see her enter the office with Roscoe in tow. Avery didn’t come in unannounced very often.

The pretty blonde smiled at her, then looked down at Roscoe, who’d run to her the moment they arrived. “Hey, Avery. We weren’t expecting you today.”

Roscoe adored Lila. He was fond of Gus, too, but the dog seemed to have more of an affinity for the ladies. Except for Chase. He was just wild about Chase.

“Hey, Lila. I’m just here for a guest file.”

“Oh? Which one? I’ll grab it for you.”

“No that’s okay. I got it.” She sat down at Gus’s desk and shook the mouse to wake his computer. “I really have to set these files up for sharing on my home computer.” She’d been meaning to. It just hadn’t seemed like that much of a priority before.

“Who are we looking up?” Lila strolled over and perched on the side of Gus’s desk. She always wore pretty dresses and high heels, despite working in the middle of the woods. “It’s the sexy one in cabin six, isn’t it?”

Damn. Avery couldn’t stop the truth from showing on her face. “I just need to know what his story is.”

Lila nodded. “Gus told me he’d done something to piss you off. What was it?”

“I don’t know. There’s just something…not right about him. He’s way too friendly, and he’s here all alone, and he couldn’t wait to ask me out.” Avery copied his home address from his guest file and pasted it into the search box on her favorite map site.

“Shame on him, asking you out. He should know how protective you are of your never-ending dry spell.”

“It’s not just that. I’m thinking he’s a reporter or something.”

“Well, that man could report on me anytime.” Lila shook her head, sliding off the edge of Gus’s desk and walking back to her own. “He could report all over me.”

“I’m serious, Lila. My gut tells me something isn’t right about him.”

“Yeah, he’s just too good-looking. Tell you what. If you don’t want him, send him over here to me.”

“Now, see? Look at this. Look at where he lives.” Avery zoomed in on the satellite version of the map. It wouldn’t get her as close as usual, but she could clearly tell it wasn’t any kind of city. “Why does a man who lives in the woods need to vacation in the woods?”

Apparently, Lila had to see for herself. She walked back over and leaned over Avery’s shoulder, peering at the screen. “Maybe he’s cheating on his wife and chose here to do it?”

“No, it can’t be that.” The whole idea gave Avery an unpleasant chill. Even if she never intended to give him the time of day, she hated the thought that he might have a wife. She’d rather him be nuts than married. “I mean, he hasn’t had any female guests.”

“You can’t be sure of that.”

Avery sighed. “I guess you’re right.” She’d never admit to Lila that she’d been watching him, but it didn’t matter anyway. He could easily have smuggled someone in one of the many times that she wasn’t watching.

“Background check,” they both said at the same time.

A little over an hour and fifty bucks later, Avery was no more the wiser but a lot more disgruntled. There was little information to be had about Chase Randall. He didn’t appear to have a criminal record or a wife, at least not one she could find. He did appear to have siblings and good credit. If he was employed in the media, he wasn’t well known, and she could find nothing about his employment. She left Lila laughing about her being paranoid, and decided to go see Gus who, according to Lila, was unpacking some items in the store.

Of course. It was just her luck that she saw Chase leaving the store as she walked toward it. Avery had half a mind to turn around and walk away, but she forced herself not to. She wouldn’t let him intimidate her. Besides, running would be childish.

“Hi,” he said when they reached talking range.

His smile made her belly do flip-flops, and she wished he would look anywhere but at her. “Hi.” She smiled back at him. She just couldn’t help it. She couldn’t be near him without getting all hot and bothered.

  “
Where’s your dog?”

“Roscoe’s in the office with Lila. They’re buds.” She walked away before things could get any more awkward.

  “Avery,” he called after her.

She turned to look at him, crossing her arms over her chest. She was wearing a bra this time, but her nipples still wanted to reach out and touch him. “What?”

“I’m sorry if I came on too strong the other day. I just…I just really want to get to know you.”

“I don’t know…” Maybe she should fuck him once, just to get it out of her system.

“Think about it. Think about having dinner with me, a coffee, a beer, anything. You don’t have to answer now. Think about it, and knock on my door or give me a call with your answer.”

All of that sounded like work. All she wanted was to be under him on her bed, the table, the floor—whatever, as long as she was under him. Her mind kept flashing back to that morning’s dream, and she knew she had to get away before that stupid blushing happened again.

“You have my cell number in the paperwork. I swear I’m not a reporter, and like I said before, I don’t bite.”

Now she knew why she hadn’t been afraid of him, even when they were alone and he could have jumped her. He was the one who should be afraid. He wanted to have dinner and probably learn all her secrets, and she wanted to hump his leg—hard.

“I’ll think about it.” Avery walked away as fast as she could without actually breaking into a run. His background check was clear. The only thing still making her suspicious was where he lived. That and her gut telling her he wasn’t what he seemed. The rest of her body was busy harping on the fact that he’d said he didn’t bite. It was particularly interested in the fact that he’d amended his statement with one word, “Much.”

  Chapter 4

Chase was in pure hell, one his mate was subjecting him to. Avery wanted no part of him and wouldn’t succumb to his charms. He’d barely even gotten a smile out of her over the past few days, much less the chance to mate with her. He’d been very calm and placating in asking her out again, but she hadn’t called, knocked on his door, waved at him, or sent up any smoke signals. He knew she watched him from her front window, but that was it, and it wasn’t enough. Chase needed to claim her. It was killing him to know she was so close, yet completely out of his reach.

Then there was his brother. He’d called Liam to tell him he was out. He was done watching Avery from across the lake, looking for chances to accidentally-on-purpose bump into her just like the stalker she thought he was. He would go to her, somehow explain himself, and finally take her. Even though he’d only been waiting days, it felt like years.

Predictably, Liam had been against his new plan, and they’d argued. Liam had ordered him to start nosing around her house, peeking in windows and pawing through her trash for clues like some true psycho. He’d said hell no and Liam had pulled the alpha thing again with a do-it-or-else speech. What a butt.

Chase had come to the conclusion that, alpha or no alpha, this ridiculous mission had to end. He was the big bad wolf, not a prowler. He’d peek in her windows tonight and maybe even disgust himself by digging through her trash a single time, just to obey his fatheaded alpha. Then he was going on his own mission, one that didn’t involve spying on his mate. Yes, humans could be a danger to shifters, just not this human.

When stalker duty was over, Chase was going to buy the biggest, most beautiful bouquet of flowers he could find, knock on her door, and tell her the reason he’d been so creepy was because he liked her. Then he’d take her on a date, out for a nice dinner and some good wine. She’d fall into his arms at the end of it, just like the women did in those sappy movies his little sister liked to watch.

If that didn’t work, he’d show her his wolf. Once she stopped screaming, he’d tell her she was his mate. Either way, he would fuck her until she didn’t want to leave his bed, never mind walk away from him again. Liam would get over what he’d done when all of her secrets came spilling out of her mouth in post-coital bliss. The cloak-and-dagger shit was a waste of time.

Ready to get it over with, Chase shed his clothes and left the cabin, leaving the door unlocked. For once, he felt excited about this fool mission. One way or another, it would end that night. He wouldn’t even tell Liam what he was up to until it was all over, and unlike his spy career, Operation Win Your Mate would be a success. Chase wouldn’t allow defeat when it came to his mate.

He didn’t take the time to savor the feel of the warm night air or the sounds in the woods. He was too intent on seeing his mate and getting his journey into trash-picking over and done with. What did Liam expect to find in her trash, anyway? It was stupid, but possibly the least he could do, since he was about to toss Liam’s plan in the trash.

Chase headed straight for the dense tree line that curved to the left of the lake separating their cabins. Avery had been right when she’d said her place usually attracted families. Most of the others he’d seen on his explorations were families with a bunch of kids in tow. Still, he’d seen a couple in the throes of passion his second night at White Oak Run. Retirees getting their freak on, and more power to them. He’d been out for a run in wolf form and had given them wide berth. Chase was no cock blocker.

It didn’t take him long to get to the side marked “private property” and barrel straight up to the cabin. For a moment, he envisioned running up to her door, shifting and knocking. When she opened the door, he’d grab her and kiss her until she couldn’t see straight. She’d immediately become overwhelmed by the sheer sexual power of his naked body and lie down spread-eagled, offering herself for anything and everything he had in mind.

Pressing his nose up against the corner of her living room window, he mentally sighed. Her dog had started barking up a storm the moment he’d gotten close to the cabin. He willed Roscoe to shut up. They were friendly barks, but he didn’t need Avery coming to investigate. He should have waited for her to go to sleep or something, but he was all out of patience. He needed to put Liam’s shit to bed—now.

He couldn’t see much of anything in the room he’d peeked into. The light was off and there was a whole lot of nothing going on, so he trotted around the side of the cabin.

The next room had a high window, probably the bathroom. Next came another darkened room, with a big bed sporting a fluffy purple comforter. He was going to take Avery on top of that comforter, bent over that little wooden table, and up against the wall for good measure. Moving on, he finally saw some signs of life. His mouth opened of its own volition, his tongue hanging out as he panted in excitement at the sight of her just seconds before he got a face full of dog barking happily on the opposite side of the window.

Roscoe just made it harder. How did Liam think he was supposed to watch her like a furry peeping tom with the dog scenting him? Reluctantly, he moved away from the window. The sight of her had reinforced his determination to end his annoying hide-and-seek job.

Avery had been standing in the kitchen, a cup of something steamy in her hand, a pair of too-short shorts covering the ass he’d soon have free rein to bite and a ratty-looking grey T-shirt hiding the breasts he couldn’t wait to lick. Her hair was up in a messy ponytail, and she had the look of someone well settled in at home. In other words, she looked absolutely beautiful. He didn’t much care what she wore when he was around, with the exception of those shorts. Her clothing wouldn’t stay on for long if he had anything to say about it, but she could only wear those shorts for him.

With Roscoe losing his mind like he was, Chase had no choice. He moved back to the window and growled, then risked a short bark to warn the dog to stop barking before he blew it. Roscoe turned off like a faucet, but Avery looked toward the window anyway. Damn, he’d definitely have to move on.

He walked around the other side of the house to find the trash cans, then shifted back to his human form to get the job done. He lifted the lid off one of the steel trash cans and caught a scent he didn’t want to identify. Liftin
g the shiny black bag out, he dumped the contents on the ground, reminding himself that it would all be over tonight. Good thing he had a strong stomach.

  * * * *

  “What is it, Roscoe?”

Avery set her mug of tea down on the counter and walked to the window. Roscoe had been going off over something he saw outside. She’d brewed herself a cup of chamomile tea to soothe her nerves, which were still rattled from her last encounter with Chase. She should find him creepy. He was creepy… Oh hell, who was she kidding? The man was drop-dead gorgeous. And the way he looked at her… It was hard to look into his eyes without feeling as if something delicious was on the menu. Her.

“I don’t see anything,” she told the dog, who’d suddenly stopped barking but still stared out the window. “What is it, boy?” Roscoe’s tail wagged, a good thing, but he didn’t usually get so excited over the random animals that ambled by. Outside, he’d sometimes go chasing after a squirrel. Inside, he usually couldn’t care less.

A little uneasy, despite the dog’s tail wagging, she went over to flip the light switch then moved back to the window. It was much easier to see out there with the lights off inside, but she still couldn’t pinpoint any reason for the mad barking he’d done. “Are you just being a silly dog? How about a treat?”

Roscoe looked up at her with those big, soulful eyes she loved so much. Of course he wanted a treat. Roscoe always wanted a treat.

Avery patted him on the head. “You’re such a good boy, Roscoe. A little on the crazy side sometimes, but still a good boy.” She padded over to her small pantry and grabbed a bag of Roscoe’s favorite treats. She shook a few into her hand and had just resealed the bag when Roscoe took up his barking again.

To her surprise, he wasn’t waiting when she emerged from the pantry. “Roscoe, I thought we had a deal.”

The new round of barking stopped, just as suddenly as it started, and she went looking for him, treats in hand as she called his name. She finally found him in her study staring out the window. Avery kept the light off and walked over to peer out, not really expecting to see anything.
