I opened my eyes, alarmed by the sudden shivering on my spine.

“I understand,” I mumbled, terrified at the thought of Alex being punished once again for my sake. It was not hard to imagine what Tex had in mind for him; he was notorious in his world for his sadistic methods of torturing.

Christopher was back. He threw my purse on my lap without a word and sat in the front seat. Mateo turned on the radio to break the awful silence.

My head was burning with fury at Christopher’s manipulative attitude. Did he behave like a jerk just to start a fight between us to keep me away from him? That seemed silly and farfetched, even for him. I knew Christopher too well to realize that he never did anything without a reason. In the past, he had tried to keep me away from potential dangers he’d been able to see by traveling to my future. Could this be the reason for his absurd behavior tonight? Had he seen me turn into an alcoholic? But he had told me the League did not allow him glimpses into the future anymore. Yet, I remembered the way he had hidden his eyes from me when he said that, making me wonder whether he was telling me the whole truth. For those who knew him as well as I did, or thought I did, it would be easy to guess that once he was fixated on something, he would always find the way. In this case, what he would have to be fixated on was me, which also seemed unlikely. I refused to accept that my drinking habits had increasingly changed over the last two years from not drinking at all to at least three drinks the nights I went out with Kate and a couple of glasses of wine when I was at home feeling lonely. Sleeping was easier after that. And then, there were those pitiful nights when my head didn’t spin at the third glass and I kept on.

By the time the black jeep parked in front of my house, it had started raining. I opened the door and ran to the house before Christopher had time to open the umbrella under which he intended to escort me. I didn’t look back. I slammed the door behind me, wishing I could slam the door to the past as easily. Just like Christopher had done.
