“Thirteen souls, all dead and burnt to ashes, Sister Leader,” Lucy replied.

  “Thirteen?” the sister leader repeated.

Lucy nodded. “Yes, Sister Leader. Just like you requested. Thirteen.”

The sister leader clapped her hands together and a hologram appeared on the wall. It looked like a widescreen television, and it played a recording of all that had previously transpired in the bus with Lucy.

The four women watched the entire footage from the beginning when Lucy walked up to the driver and began to talk to him.

“You said you were a banker?” the sister leader asked as the footage played before them.

  Lucy nodded. “Yes, Sister Leader.”

At the end, as the bus blew up in the huge explosion, the other women all clapped their hands together.

“That was an impressive effort, Sister Lucy. I am sure that Sister Adriana and Sister Phoebe here would agree with me,” the sister leader said.

The other two women nodded. “Yes, Sister Leader. We both agree with you. It was an impressive effort,” they both chorused together.

“Yes, it was. But we need to review it again. You see, first of all, the potency of the drug in the water was too weak. You should have made it much stronger than it was. That way, the driver would not have revived easily,” the sister leader said.

“Yes, Sister Leader. I thought so too myself when I discovered to my dismay that he was recovering while we were still in motion. I will endeavour to increase the concentrate next time,” Lucy said.

“Yes, Sister Lucy. You need to do that. Another thing—you need to make sure that the victims are all completely vanquished so that when the fire comes, it consumes them all whole and completely dead. I hope you can see that the driver almost got away back there. Had he been completely subdued by the drink, he would not have been able to make an attempt to escape the way he did,” the sister leader added.

“I understand, Sister Leader. I will take note of these points and apply them on my next assignment,” Lucy replied.

“But that will not be happening anytime soon. For next week, it will be Sister Phoebe’s turn to carry out her own assignment. Sister Phoebe, are you ready to do so?” the sister leader asked, looking at one of the other women.

Sister Phoebe nodded. “Yes, Sister Leader. I am prepared to undertake my own assignment.”

“Very well then, Sister Phoebe. As usual, thirteen souls, all in one incident,” the sister leader said.

Sister Phoebe nodded and raised her left hand. “Yes, Sister Leader. Thirteen souls in one incident.”

*** The following week, another bus slowed to a halt at a designated bus stop. The driver opened the electronic door and three passengers came on board. As they all sought for empty seats to sit down in, the driver drove out of the bus stop.

Phoebe, who was seated in the last seat, counted the passengers. There were now thirteen of them. She smiled and picked up the bag which had lain by her side all this while. She opened it and brought out the small boxes of chocolate in it. She now stood up and began to pass the boxes around.

“They are free samples of my homemade chocolate. You can try some and let me know what you think of the flavour. My address is on the back in case you need more,” Phoebe said with a sweet smile.

The passengers all smiled back at her in return and began to collect the chocolate.

By the time she had gotten to the front seat, the driver smiled at her and collected two packs. “Don’t mind me for being a little greedy. From the looks on all of their faces, I am sure that these chocolates are very sweet indeed,” the driver said.

“No, why would I mind? Of course you can take more if you want. Do you have anyone in mind?” Phoebe asked as she sat down on the seat next to his.

The driver nodded enthusiastically. “Definitely. It’s my little granddaughter. It’s her birthday today. I think I am going to surprise her with this special homemade chocolate once I close from work later in the evening today.”

Phoebe smiled. “Really? How sweet of you. I am sure she would have loved to have some.”

The driver had already taken a bite when he suddenly froze on the steering wheel. Suddenly, his eyes were filled with curiosity as he stared hard at the woman by his side. “What was that you said? She would have loved to have some or she would love to have some?”

  “Loved, not love, old man.”

The driver stopped chewing the chocolate. “Loved, not love?”

Phoebe nodded. “Yes, old man. You don’t think you are going to make it to her birthday alive, do you?”

As the chocolate slipped from his hand, the driver caught sight of the rearview mirror. Through his fading vision, he could see that the rest of the passengers were all unconscious, and there were halfeaten chocolate packs littered all over the place.

He turned to glance at the woman by his side. As he tried to focus on her, he suddenly lost his sight and vision. And then his consciousness left him.

Phoebe looked down at the unconscious driver, who was now slumped over his steering wheel. She then glanced at the road ahead. There was a traffic hold-up which had built up and blocked the road. Phoebe turned and looked at all the unconscious passengers behind. An idea suddenly came to her.

“No one ever said that it must be only thirteen souls,” Phoebe said as she leaned over and stamped her foot down on the accelerator. The bus suddenly lurched forward and began to speed towards the traffic hold-up ahead.
