“Shit!” I gripped the steering wheel tightly as some dickhead cut me off. I merged into the right lane. I was late. How the hell I didn’t hear my alarm go off at 6:00 a.m. this morning, I have no idea. I know I needed more than the five hours sleep that I normally get. But once my head hit the pillow, I was out to the world, not knowing that I’d sleep through my alarm. This wasn’t the only time this week. Four. Four friggin times I missed it in a row.

The traffic slowed in front of me and then came to a complete stop. No. Please, not now. Looking at the clock on the console of my 4WD, it flashed 6:45 a.m. Fuck! I should have set my alarm earlier than 6:00 a.m., but who was I kidding, I still would’ve been late. It was bound to happen.

The traffic began to move at a snail’s pace. All three lanes on the highway moved as one as they approached the next turnoff. Edging closer, ready to turn off, horns blared in front while the road workers blocked the turning lane. Why did they have to fix the damn road now?

Shaking my head as I passed several cars with their drivers yelling all kinds of things out their window toward the workers, but it really wasn’t their fault. It was the damn councils, wanting to do the road work now, instead of at night. The traffic began to slow as we passed the obvious first part of the work.

Looking to my left at the overpass, a motorbike zoomed past, getting ahead of everyone. Damn, I should’ve thought of that first!

Seconds later, several cars did the same thing. Looking around, watching as all the traffic moved passed. More horns were blaring because the cars in front weren’t moving. The same drivers yelling absurd things out the window as they tailgated. Glancing back to my left, it was now or never if I wanted to arrive at work at a decent time.

As soon as a black skyline sped past, foot to the floor, I swerved out into the lane. Well, it wasn’t much of a lane. Yes, it was for traffic to stop in case of emergencies or for the emergency department to use in case of an accident. The fact was, this was an emergency. I was bloody late for work. There wasn’t going to be any more chances after the last time I was late. Donald had told me that, more than once. He’d given me more chances than anyone that had worked for him. He knew I needed this. Needed the money. I’d worked my ass off for the last three years to save the money I needed to buy my shop. Three years of working endless shifts, saving every dollar, while having practically nothing for myself. It helped that I didn’t have to fork out for rent. Living with my only brother, Dwayne had helped a great deal.

From a young age, Dwayne raised me. Our mother left us with our dad when I was two years old, so I don’t remember much of her. My dad, on the other hand, was in and out of jail. At the moment, this was the longest he’d stayed out of the dump. Four years and counting. I lived with Dwayne above my dad’s workshop. He owned the only bike shop in town. Well, he didn’t allow any other shops to open if you get my drift. He and the guys that worked with him made sure of it. He practically ran the town. I never asked why he did this. It had nothing to do with me. Well, I didn’t want any part of what really was going on.

Gaining speed as I drove down the lane, I approached the turnoff that I needed so I could head back to where I was required. A truck pulled out in front of me, forcing me to slam both of my feet on the brake pedal suddenly. Smoke from my tires covered my view from the back window. I couldn’t see a damn thing. If something came from behind, there was no way in hell that I’d see what it was if it rear-ended me.

Gripping the steering wheel yet again, I eased off the brake as the truck slowly began to move. Flicking my indicator left, letting everyone know where I was going, and I could see the road ahead opening up. Thank God! Five meters and I would be away from this hell.

Suddenly, red and blue lights flashed in my mirror. Squinting, the car was fast approaching. Shit! I was in the emergency lane. I needed to move quickly because the cop car was gaining on me fast. Just before the turnoff, a patch of grass opened up to the left with enough space so I pulled off. The cop was flying down the strip, glancing between where I was and the traffic to my right. Hopefully, there was enough room for the cop to drive past. Minute by minute went by waiting for the cop to drive pass, but nothing. Frowning, I looked into my side mirror and found that the cop car had stopped directly behind me.

Red and blue lights continued to flash while the driver’s door opened. Oh fuck! Why of all days did I decide to take the damn emergency lane to get to work? While loosening my seat belt which I swear was trying to choke me, I quickly fixed my clothes. Maybe if I showed a little more skin I could get out of the ticket I knew I was going to receive.

Undoing the two top buttons of my blouse, I quickly rearranged my breasts in my bra, lifting them up and pushing them together. Opening my top a little more revealing the top half of my babies, I couldn’t contain the blush that I felt covering my cheeks. Never in my life have I done this. God, I hoped this worked. I couldn’t afford a ticket right now.

Sitting back, calming my breath, my eyes followed the tall body that exited from the car and approached mine slowly. By the look of the body walking toward my car, it was a male, judging by the build that was a bonus. I leaned over reaching for my bag, ready to pull out my wallet
to hand over my license, when there was a tap on the window.

Gasping. Jesus! Did he practically run the distance to my car?

Fumbling with my bag, I reached over and hit the button to bring my window down.

Before I could get out a single word, the officer spoke, “Miss, do you realize that you were using the emergency lane as the highway?”

  That voice!

My body shivered as his words slithered over my skin. Placing my bag on my lap, then taking a deep breath, I glanced up and lost my breath altogether. A shadow covered my window and all I saw was his body. I couldn’t help my eyes which traveled from the dark navy pants, black belt, and gun on one side. I had no idea what was on the other side as my eyes roamed up his body. The light blue police shirt hugged him like a second skin. Leaning forward to get a better view, I banged my head against the door frame.

“Fuck!” Gripping my head and pressing into it with my palm, trying to get rid myself of the damn pain. Crap, it hurt. I didn’t hit it that hard, did I? Shifting away from the window, I pulled the mirror in my direction to see what the damage was to my head. Great! A big fat line sat in the middle of my forehead, red and lumpy. It was close to breaking the skin, which I’m glad it didn’t.

“Miss, are you all right?” the sexy officer with that voice asked me.

Breathing through my nose, trying to push away the pain, I nod. “Yeah, nothing I’m not used to,” I grumbled. Leaning my head back against the headrest, I closed my eyes fighting the tears that wanted to escape.

“Are you sure?” I could hear the concern in his voice. Turning my head toward where he stood, I now found him crouched down beside my car. His hand rested on my shoulder, obviously trying to give me some kind of comfort.

Shaking my head slightly. “Yeah, peachy.” I couldn’t help the sarcasm. I felt like crap

Clearing his throat. “Do you have a reason why you were using the emergency lane, as a normal road?”

“I was late for work, officer. I don’t have a perfectly good answer to tell you,” I mumbled.

“Well, least you’re honest and you didn’t give me some bullshit line about something that really didn’t happen.”

Glancing back his way, I noticed the smile covering his lips. I couldn’t take my eyes from those lips of his. The way his top lip curled at the top showing off a sexy and sinful smirk that had my blood flowing. All I wanted to do was bite his bottom lip and hear all kinds of things coming from his mouth. What the hell is wrong with me? I can’t have thoughts like that about a guy I just met, let alone an officer of the law.

“If you’re going to book me, can you do it now so I can be on my way to work? That is if I still have a job, since I’m already fucking late?” I growl.

“You have a dirty mouth, don’t you? I thought ladies didn’t swear?”

I could hear the humor in his tone of voice and I couldn’t help but smile to myself. Lady! If he only knew how much of a lady I really wasn’t. There was nothing about me that I’d classify as a lady. Yeah, I could act like one, any woman could, but I was far from being one.

“You have no idea how dirty my mouth is, Officer.”

Fuck! My hand flew to my mouth. I had no filter. I never thought before I spoke, it all just came out. Plus, I just sat there and flirted with a police officer. Oh, sweet Jesus! I really needed to keep my mouth shut.

A boom of laughter echoed through my window. Looking up to where he stood, I couldn’t see his eyes as his head hung forward while he laughed. I began to get frustrated, especially considering that I could have been on my way to work, or possibly have even been there by now.

I ripped my license from my purse and held it out to him. “You finished?” I hissed.

I needed to get to work. I couldn’t sit there any longer, my job was in jeopardy.

When his laughter died, I again shoved my hand out of the window waiting for him to take my license from me. When he did his hand slid over mine, staying there for a second longer than it should have. My eyes found his. I couldn’t look away. He had the most beautiful eyes I’d ever seen, one light green and one blue. I’ve never seen eyes like that before. They drew me in. There was no way I could pull myself away from the depth of those eyes. It was like he was trying to edge his way into my soul. My breathing picked up as he leaned forward against my four-wheel drive while he looked from my license to me. I tried everything to take my eyes away from him, but I couldn’t.

“Amelia Wilder?” his voice purred my name. Oh, my God! The way my name slipped from his lips had me clamping my legs together. The tone of his voice echoed through my body. My core clenched at the unknown of what he could possibly say or do with his mouth. Seconds went by as he continued to stare at me through the window. I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t handle him being so close to me, although he was on the other side of the door. He was dangerous. It poured from him. Every single inch of his magnificent body that I could see was sinful, and I knew his type. Dangerous, too cocky for his own good, and one who knew he could get any woman he wanted with just one single smile.

His eyes left mine as he flipped open his ticket book and began to write. Of course, he would give me a ticket! Why did I think he wouldn’t? Because he follows the rules. Simple.

I couldn’t contain the laugh that left my lips. Shaking my head, I threw my bag back onto the passenger seat and waited for the damn ticket I was getting. I didn’t want to glance at the clock on the dash, but my eyes went there anyway, whether I liked it or not.

7:09 a.m.! Yep, there was no way I was keeping my job, no matter what excuses I had. Donald would see straight through it like he always did. Even if I told him what really happened and it wasn’t a lie, he wouldn’t care. I could always tell him my real name. Well, my last name since everyone in town knew the name. It wasn’t so much the name they knew it was my dad.

I used my mother’s maiden name, so I wouldn’t be connected to my dad. Don’t get me wrong, I love my dad. Although he and my mother didn’t get along, he took us in and looked after me and my brother. He gave us a roof over our head, delivered food on the table and was always there for us, no matter what the situation.

Wilder was my mother’s maiden name. I can’t remember much of my mother. Dwayne, on the other hand could, but didn’t elaborate on it that much. I knew deep down Mum wasn’t the best person. Shit, neither was my dad! But he was there for us, not like my mother ever was.

“Miss Wilder,” his voice broke me from my own thoughts.

Looking back in his direction, he held out my license and the obvious ticket I’d received from driving down the damn side lane. Reaching out, I gripped the ticket ready to get on my way, but he had a hold of it smiling down at me. Cocky damn bastard!

“Please remember next time to only use the lane in case of an emergency, Miss Wilder.”

“It was a damn emergency!” I couldn’t help but grumble. Ripping the ticket from his hand, I leaned over and threw it into the glove compartment, and turned the ignition on so I could get out of there.

“Have a great day, Miss Wilder,” the officer said.

I was so tempted to flip him the bird, but knowing my luck I’d get a ticket for doing that as well. I shifted into first gear, looked into my rear-view mirror to see if there was any oncoming traffic and when there wasn’t any, I hit the gas and moved away from the cop car.

He stood there staring as my car edged further and further away. He didn’t attempt to get into his patrol car, just stood there watching after me. Frowning, slowing my speed, I looked to his face, or what I could see, and noticed a slight smirk covering his mouth. Arrg! Of course, he would smirk. He had the power to do what he wanted while wearing that damn uniform. That same uniform that I would love to find out what was underneath. But that was never going to happen. I couldn’t fall for a cop. Or anyone that was in law enforcement. It wasn’t a good idea. Once they found out who my dad was, they’d work their way into my life and heart and then it would all come crashing dow
n. The law wanted my dad. Although they knew where he was, they didn’t have enough evidence on him to put him away for good. It was always the same, a year here or there, six months, whatever the courts would allow, but it really wasn’t what they wanted. I didn’t want to know why they wanted him so much.

I stayed out of that part of his life. Well, my dad made sure I did. It wasn’t a life for his baby girl to get involved in and I was okay with that. Turning the corner, the sexy officer vanished from my sight. There was something about him. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Yes, he was sexy. The way his eyes held mine or the fact that his eyes roamed over my body. There was something definitely there, between us. Nothing was ever going to happen. Yes, a little excitement between us, but that was it. It really came down to the fact that his job was dangerous. I couldn’t be with someone like that. Although my life wasn’t perfect, I couldn’t deal with knowing if he would not come home one day. The day that one specific car pulled up in my driveway to give me that bad news. The news that I’d never see him again.

Yep, never going to have anything to do with a guy like that.

My phone buzzed, scaring the shit out of me. Hitting the blue-tooth button. Suddenly a voice echoed over the line before I could get a word out.

“Amelia, where are you? You were supposed to be here over an hour ago,” Donald hissed.

Fuck, someone had their knickers in a twist. “I’m two minutes away, Donald. I was stuck in traffic. Then there was a—”

“I don’t want to hear the excuses, Amelia. Just get here will you.”

The line went dead. Well, I was telling the damn truth. I’ll show him the fucking ticket I got and prove what time I was sitting in that stupid line of traffic. Proof I was in my damn car and not at home where I really wanted to be.

This was the day I was asking her to marry me. I’d held off for the last year, wanting to do it at the right time. This last year had been hectic. With moving up the ranks to SWAT, and Amelia working at the local art school, we didn’t see much of each other. But that was going to change, now. Pulling the SWAT truck into the undercover carpark, the boys jumped out and headed toward the building. Damn, I was glad this day was over. I’d worked my ass off for the last three months so I could have the following week off with my girl. I had planned to spend every available minute deep inside her body. There was no other place I’d rather be than there.
