The final irony was that Andrew Fitzwilliam, the elder brother of Richard, died at the age of 45 of a heart attack without leaving a male heir. Therefore Sir Richard became Lord Gladney, the heir of the Earl of Matlock and Mary eventually became a countess. Thus it was that all of Elizabeth’s younger sisters, of whom she had despaired when they were younger, became the wives of peers, while she and Darcy were always just Mr. and Mrs. Darcy, a circumstance that bothered them not at all. They had their love, their six children, their extended family, and Pemberley, the jewel of Derbyshire, and were quite content all the years of their life.
