He came at me with the knife. I had only a split second to decide what to do to save my own life. I did the only thing I could think of. I asked myself, What would Jesus do?

Kick him in the balls, my son.

  Kick him in the balls.

I nodded, knowing what I needed to do. I punted Matty-Bob right between the legs, crushing his testicles against his undercarriage and lifting him right off his feet.

He crumpled backwards onto the island and let out a tremendous bellow. His cheeks turned red as he went into labour, huffing and puffing through the pain.

Police piled into the kitchen from the hallway and from the garden, surrounding me on all sides.

“What happened, Mr Wright?” A female officer asked.

“I kicked him in the balls.”

She frowned at me. “Jeez, was that really necessary? He’s just a nutjob.”

I growled. “Now, he’s a nut job with no nuts.”

She shook her head at me in disgust. Another officer mumbled under his breath, "What an asshole."

Sal walked in with the kids. When she saw me, she looked a little surprised. I was, after all, covered in blood. “You’re still alive then?”

“You know me,” I said, shrugging. “I may be a gentle author at heart, but I’m all man where it counts.”

She sighed. “Yes, honey, of course you are. The kids are outside with the neighbours. We’ve caused quite the scene. They’re already mad at you for shaving their cat, so this isn’t going to help.

I huffed. “I told you before. I need to shave cats. It’s just who I am.”

She patted me on the shoulder. “I know, honey. I know.”

I looked at her. “Do you have a cat I can shave right now?”

  “No!”

“Shame. I could do with one to calm my nerves.”

“Matty-Bob was still groaning, even as the police officers got him to his feet. He looked at me differently now, defeated—sad. “Do you know what it’s like to be me?” he asked. “To not know what’s real or what’s normal? To me, authors are not just people. They are gods. They create worlds as gods do, and they can change people's lives like gods do.”

“But we’re just human,” I said holding out my palms. “I know it’s hard to believe, but we bleed like the rest of you.”

“Oh, brother! Sal muttered in the corner. "Can we just get this over with, please? I need to put some turkey dinosaurs in to cook and you’re all blocking my oven.”

The police officers nodded their apologies to my wife and took Matty-Bob out of the house. As they took him down the hallway, he twisted his neck all the way around to look at me, like an owl. I shuddered.

“You haven’t seen the last of me,” he swore. Then he winced. “Jesus, can someone help me get my neck straight. This really hurts.”

And then he was gone from my life once more, a fleeting impact that would forever change the landscape of my life, like an asteroid hitting the earth. Perhaps this tortured soul was the Ying to my own tortured Yang. Whereas I turned my darker thoughts to magic on the page, Matty-Bob found himself unable to find such a valuable outlet and invariably-

  “Iain!”

I spun to face my wife. “Yes, honey?”

“Can you go to the neighbours and get the kids, please? They just text me to say Molly has a poo in her nappy and they are not happy to deal with it. Also, make sure you apply lotion to her bum because she’s been getting very sore lately. Ask Jack if he needs a poo as well, as it’s about that time."

I sighed and headed for the front door. The life of an author, I thought to myself ruefully. Both a blessing and a curse.
