Jessica laughed in pure happiness. “Do you think she’d like to have a pair of guests for the winter in a few months?”She smiled at her husband.
Lane took her hand and kissed it. “I understand my bride would like to show me around Rochester and I confess I’d like to meet the rest of her family.” He placed his arm around her waist with devotion.
“That sounds like a capital plan, my boy,” her father said. “But first we have to eat some badly burnt fish that my daughter cooked for us.”
“Don’t try slipping it to the hound, Father,” Jessica warned, her eyes full of laughter. “We like that dog too much to risk his health.”
Lane pulled out her chair for her and kissed the top of her head as she sat down. He set his hands on her shoulders and she reached up, took his hand in hers and looked up at him.
“This was worth the trip. It was worth everything that’s happened since I ran out into that garden maze. To get here, I’d have gone through worse,” she vowed, her voice soft with wonder.
“I’m just glad you wound up here, where you belong. We're together forever,” Lane said with warmth and joy.
