“I… I didn’t want to but it’s different, so different and I can’t go back now.” She scratched her neck nervously her eyes shifted about the room. I knew there was a lot more, more that I might have to dig to get.

“Who changed you? Why, why did they do this?” I placed a hand on her shoulder in attempts to be reassuring.

Now, I might be a good friend but I definitely have trouble dealing with other people’s emotions. So I had no idea what to do when she started crying.

“There was something they wanted. I don’t know what it was! But they made me come here again. They made me see you guys but I knew I couldn’t be near you!” There was some incoherent sobbing in which I wish I was mind reading to figure out what the hell she was saying.

“Come on, what happened? Tell me everything.”

So she did and I was not very happy to figure out what she knew. I only hoped she wouldn’t pay for spilling the beans.

Apparently whoever had turned her had remained anonymous. They of course, threatened her family and told her to spy on me. They never told her why but that didn’t mean I didn’t know why. They wanted to figure out what I was and how I worked.

But I never gave anything away which was why Jade was with the prissy squad. It was some sort of punishment to make her hang around people who’d constantly abuse her verbally.

What she did learn though was that she was working for Niklas’ parents. Something she only figured out when she was lead passed Niklas (who did not know her at the time.)

I was already suspicious of Niklas as it was. He was being weird and this bit of information didn’t help.

“Look, Jade. You’re a vampire now but that doesn’t mean you have to be bad. It doesn’t mean you have to do what they say. Just… fake it till you make it right?” I forced a smile.

  “I suppose.” She muttered.

“I’m going to need your help then. I need you to counter spy for me. Figure out what is really going on and whatever you do; don’t listen to their BS.” I patted her on the shoulder.

“We should probably get to class.” She replied glancing at the door.

“Class smash. I’m going to investigate.” I smirked at her.

  “Dia…” She said slowly.

“Don’t let anyone know where I went!” I cried and headed out the door.

“Dia!” She called after me but I ignored her and continued out the school.

So I ditched school to try and make sense of this mess. Any other teen would be happy to leave that hell hole they call school but it almost seemed like leaving the last bit of normalcy I had left.

My dad left us, my mom is off doing whatever it is that she is doing, Seth only bought my soul and Niklas decided to cause all sorts of mischief without even knowing it. My friends scattered to the four winds for apparently no reason. Speaking of… I wonder if Liam knows anything about this.

Maybe that is why he was being so weird.

I headed for the playground that Seth and I went to on our not date thing. I knew that if I would find him anywhere it would be there.

I found him sitting on the swings; it was a weird sight, a demon sitting on the swing set midmorning. There were no children around because the misty rain coming down from the sky.

“I found something.” I told him as I walked up to the swing next to him.

I waited till I was lazily swinging next to him before I said anything else. “They turned one of my friends. They wanted her to spy on me but I was too busy pretending to be human to notice anything was wrong.”

“They’ve known. They’ve known for far longer than I thought.” He stopped swinging and looked at me. “Your father was in deep and this might not have been his fault.”

“Wait…” I stopped and looked at him. “What are you saying?” His eyes were staring into my soul.

“I’m saying that I think they set him up. They made it look like he had no choice but to sell you off to the highest bidder. They just didn’t anticipate he would run off to some demon and sell your soul.” I blinked at him.

“So where is he now then?” I swallowed the spit that had somehow magically begun collecting in my mouth.

I didn’t want to hear him say it. I’m not even sure why I asked.

“I think you know the answer to that.”

  Chapter 15: Action Plans

  September 16th, 2012

  8:27pm

It was hard admitting the truth. Even now. It’s hard to admit it to this piece of paper this thing that can’t judge me for my lack of tears or tell me that I couldn’t have avoided this.

Death is inevitable for all of us.

I don’t know what happened and I am not sure I want to know. I guess all I needed to know was that he was gone and not coming back.

Now the only question is what am I going to do about it?

  9:01pm

You know what happens when you find out your being watched? That there is someone out there that has some creepy motive to stalking you in the night? (And I’m not talking about Niklas.)

Seth makes you move out. That’s what happens.

That’s right. Seth made me leave my house a couple of days ago but I guess it wasn’t like I was doing anything considering I was kind of messed up about the whole; my dad’s thing… and the whole Jade being a vampire thing… I guess just the whole my life thing.

But let me look on the bright side, the house was nice. I guess I shouldn’t have expected Seth to live in anything too shabby. Demons always get what they want.

The room that he had set me up with was large and had simple furnishings. Everything was an off white or cream color besides the wood of the four poster bed which was a dark cherry wood.

When Seth handed me the last of my bags I sat down on the bed and let out a sigh. In some ways I felt I should really be more torn up, more upset and angry at the world. But I wasn’t. I just dealt with it.

I don’t know how long I sat there for but I was finally knocked out of my reverie when I heard a car pull up to the house from outside my window.

I hoped that it wasn’t someone who’d followed me once again and found my new place of residence but instead I found that it was Niklas. Why he was here I wasn’t sure and I wasn’t sure I really wanted to know. So I figured it there’s no time like the present… to make a getaway.

I slipped outside my door quietly and was startled when I ran into Liam of all people just standing outside my door. I still wonder why everyone was being so creepy.

He’d successfully thwarted my getaway. Not that that was what I was thinking at the time…

“Liam! Holy mother man!” I exasperated. It was then that I realized I hadn’t seen Liam in like 3 weeks. I guess time flies when someone is trying to kill you, boys are trying very poorly to court you and you have to deal with your best friend turning into a vampire… Welcome to my life.

“Dia… I didn’t think you were already here.” Liam scratched the back of his head.

“Yeah well… here I am.” I was irritated. I hadn’t seen Ian in however long and here he was just pretending to act all casual, like he didn’t disappear or anything.

  “I just… Seth said…” Liam huffed a little.

“Wait, you knew I was coming and were trying to avoid me? What the hell is going on Liam?” I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting for him to answer.

“What do you mean what’s going on?” Liam raised an eyebrow at me. He was a good actor, I would give him that.

“Don’t give me that. You know perfectly well what I mean.” I glared at him. Add him on to the list of people acting suspicious.

  “I’m sure I don’t.” He countered.

“You disappear for days on end, practically kidnapping Kara. There’s something up. I know it.” I wouldn’t let up, not yet.

“Maybe I just like spending time with my girlfriend without all her friends around all the time.” He narrowed his eyes at me.

“That’s bull. You know you have all the t
ime in the world outside of school. So don’t give me that.” I clenched my teeth and maybe there was some nostril flaring but we’re pretending that didn’t happen.

“Well maybe this is about something bigger than you and me.” He hinted with anger laced into his tone.

“Something bigger? Like what? Are you God? Is that what you’re no telling me?” So I was being a little sarcastic with him… so what?

“I’m not God but there will be a day when you no longer recognize the world you live in.” Well, that wasn’t ominous at all…

“What the hell?” I wasn’t sure what else to say. I mean what do you say to that?

It was at that moment that the man with the best timing ever decided to walk around the corner. Sensing the tension he paused. I almost groaned, so much for avoiding him.

“Uh… Dia, Seth is asking for you downstairs.” He looked at Liam and me curiously.

“This isn’t over.” I said to Liam and turned to follow Niklas down the stairs.

I gave him a look that said not to ask. And of course he did anyways.

“What was that about?” Niklas was far too curious.

“Don’t ever ditch your friends ok… Oh wait, you don’t have any.” I smiled sarcastically at him and then walked passed him into the dining room where Seth sat expectantly.

“You wanted to see me?” I asked him.

“I wanted to see both of you.” Seth acknowledged Niklas briefly before turning his attention back to me, “He’s not just here for the fun of it.” Seth chuckled.

“Yeah well…” I rolled my eyes and sat in the chair closest to me. “So what’s the deal?” I ignored Niklas as he sat down in the chair next to me closer to Seth.

“The deal is that we need a plan, you know to figure out what’s going on.” Niklas said not directly looking at anyone.

“And we need one before they can make their move.” Seth informed me.

“Well then what do we do? And I know what Niklas is suggesting…” I scoffed a little. I didn’t want to have to take over someone else’s body. It was an unpleasant experience for both parties.

“And what was that idea?” Seth looked at Niklas expectantly.

“A not so very good plan…” I offered and Seth raised an eyebrow at me and turned again to look at Niklas.

“The plan isn’t complete yet but it’s something.” Niklas informed Seth. “I am willing to let Dia take over so we could know what’s going on. So that she would trust me.” Niklas gave me a pointed look which I did not return.

“I never said I was comfortable with that.” I said tight lipped. This was the world’s worst plan.

“You don’t have to be.” Seth interjected, “Look, I’m not sure how else we’ll get in undetected. So here’s the plan. Natasha will link in with Niklas tomorrow night who will be in his house like normal.”

“For that to happen I need to be in closer proximity than say… your house.” I gestured to Seth.

“Right, you and I will be on the perimeter just outside his house. What information you get you will relay to me. We can’t make any plans for what happens after this but knowing is the first step.” I smirked a little. I totally wanted to make a joke but held it in.

“Look Niklas, you need to be careful. If they go into any meetings with anyone do your best to listen in. But don’t get caught. We won’t have another chance if you do.” Seth advised.

“In other words act normal.” I finished.

“It isn’t much of a plan is it?” Niklas was nervous like he should be. We were all hoping for a better plan but I for one was anxious to know what was happening.

“No, but it gives us a lot of wiggle room. I’ll work out the details tonight.” Seth said almost as if dismissing us. Who am I kidding? He was dismissing us.

“We’ll be in touch.” I told Niklas as we stood. I hoped the message was clear that I was telling him to scram politely.

“I should hope so.” He smirked and me and then turned to leave.

Leave it to Niklas to be all mister serious one moment and then flirty the next. I guess that was just another lovely vampire quirk; bipolar disorder.

You know what they say about the best laid plans? Well neither do I. All I know is that planning and execution was something to do, something to get me away, take me out of the heat and put me into the fire.

It almost felt as if I was being separated from my old life, from school and home away from my family and friends and who knows, maybe it was a chance to start new if all went well. But I guess first we had to figure out what was going on before we could do anything about it.

And once all was said and done I could live a new life.

But maybe that was just wishful thinking.

  Chapter 16: Bad Ideas

  September 20th, 2012

  10:34pm

It didn’t go as well as I’d hoped. I should have known better. Seriously, plans never go the way that they’re meant to no matter how many contingencies you plan for. Not that we had any. We’re smart like that.

We were sitting in Seth’s living room before we were about to execute the plan. The awful plan of doom… I had gone over the plan with Niklas twice. He was rather annoyed with me but I didn’t care.

“Just hope that I don’t have to break the bond suddenly. It might hurt a little…” I smiled fakely at him. I guess that’s one thing to thank mom about.

“We’ll be fine. You worry too much.” Niklas reassured me.

“Well I don’t think it’s the brightest idea for us to sit outside your window while you… or rather I talk to your parents.” I shifted uncomfortably on Seth’s couch.

“Whatever, let’s just do this.” Niklas waved me off and started to head out the door.

Seth laughed heartily and I grabbed my jacket viciously following Niklas out the door.

Somehow I’d managed to make the bond in the car which is way more difficult than it sounds considering I have a poor attention span.

“So what happens now?” Niklas asked after I linked our minds.

“Sh…” I winced. “No talking.” It took a little while to get used to.

I could see through his eyes and my eyes at the same time. It was pretty freaky and obviously takes a little getting used to.

About 4.23 minutes later I was as adjusted as I would get.

“Here’s how this work. I can see as you, I can speak as you and I can move as you.” I jerked the wheel a little to demonstrate.

  “Jesus.” He muttered, “Point made.”

“I will let you do your own thing until the dinner party. When it started all bets are off…” If I was mean I would make him smack himself in front of his parents but that would get me nowhere, unfortunately.

  “Got it.” He replied.

“Just so we’re clear…” I trailed off and made him back himself in the face. The car swerved a little but there was no one on the road so it didn’t matter.

“Ow!” he cried, “I’m driving here!”

“You were. Park the car somewhere around here. We’ll walk in.” I’m a brilliant strategist.

We parked two blocks from Niklas’s house just after he’d told Seth and me where to go. Seth was extremely amused by the banter in the car but said nothing about it as we scouted out the area for a good hiding place near the dining room.

I allowed Niklas control of his body as he ran to his house. He went upstairs to his room and quickly changed.

I’m sure you’re happy about seeing my naked body. Niklas thought smugly. He was checking himself out in the mirror.

Your ass is saggy. I replied back as we crept across his yard and into some bushes.

Seth and I crouched below the window in the dining room in some bushes that allowed us to peak in every now and then without being detected.

I should have known that vampires would be fancy pants and have dinner parties every weekend. Seriously, they’re too rich for their own good…

Seth ignored my huff of indignation.
Unluckily for me, however, this caused Niklas to huff as well. Fortunately he was about to open the door to the dining room as that happened.

Oops. I thought which because of the connection Niklas was able to hear. Seth looked at me with mirth in his eye but remained quiet.

Let’s try to not draw attention to me with a little less huffing and a little more listening. Niklas informed me as he stepped into the room.
