River Traffic

“I stopped going to daycare when I was two! Dad took over the marina, and I stayed home. I wouldn’t even know what dumb meant! It was so crazy I could barely wrap my head around it. I probably just repeated what I thought he said.”
“Maybe when things are better you can talk to him about it.” Kat moved closer to me. “Anyway, I’m done talking about Dom Oleg. I can think of better things to do.” She pulled me in for a kiss.
With Kat beside me, and the sun a gold ball sinking low across the river, I quickly forgot about Oleg. I was ready for some smooth sailing and some brighter horizons. My ship had definitely come in.
Martha Brack Martin is an award-winning teacher-librarian in the southern Ontario town of LaSalle, near Windsor. After twenty-five years as a teacher (seventeen of them as a teacher librarian), she still gets a thrill out of getting kids excited about reading and finding just the right book for each person. She was dared by a colleague a few years ago to put Book Babe on her business card and now revels in the title. The creator of a number of Book Babe Teacher Guides, and author of four nonfiction books for children, she frequently facilitates workshops on children’s literature, teaching with technology, and librarianship. This is her first novel.
