The Great Gift (Contemporary Romance - Urban Life)

Jake interrupted his speech. "I feel like the prodigal son. He left, wised up and then headed home, just like me."
"On behalf of your mother, thank you for reading her memoirs."
"I never knew the turmoil you and she went through," said Jake.
His mother looked at her husband. "Kent, thanks for conceiving this plan to persuade our son to come home."
"Alyssa, it was only my idea. If it wasn't for you lying in the coffin as rigidly as you did, Jake would never have read the book." He turned to Jake's sister. "And thank you, Bernice, for putting so many important memories down in writing."
"Dad, Mum, it was worth every hour just to see my brother one more time," Bernice said.
Jake looked up at his sister. "I never knew Mum was so dedicated to The Oasis and to Dad. What a transformation! I would never have picked her to be a city chick."
The group chuckled and slapped each other on the shoulders. "You should have stuck around," said Bernice. "There are many more stories more amazing than what you've just read that make up the life of Mum and Dad which I have yet to write."
"I thought if I stayed out there in the middle of Australia I'd be bored," said Jake. "I longed for the city, the people, the bright lights, and the nightlife."
"I never had a boring day in my entire life," said Bernice. "As for the city and the nightlife, I've tasted it and came rushing back to the safety of The Oasis."
Jake lowered his gaze. He started to fiddle with the edge of the leather-bound book.
"I never dreamed that the city wouldn't be what I expected," he said.
"You should have asked me about the city," Alyssa whispered. "There's no comparison between the two. Life in the city is fast-paced and can be exciting, but there's danger at every corner. In the outback, life is relaxed, peaceful, quiet and safe."
"Son, let's go home," said Kent.
"Only if we go to live at The Oasis, and only if I get to hear more stories," said Jake with a smirk. He slid the leather-bound book off the table, held it tight against his chest and walked to the door. He turned and faced the group, and then gave a sharp nod. "Coming?"
