“Vincenzo. I saw him on the other side of the club.”
I winced. That wasn’t good. “He’s here with a date, or with friends?”
Tears sparkled in her eyes. “I don’t know. I couldn’t see.”
“I’m sorry, sweetie.” I pulled her in for a hug.
We stayed like that for a long moment, and I was just thinking about how close I felt to her when I was suddenly thumped from behind. It was a hard, dull rap, right on the back of my head, totally unexpected, but it felt as natural as could be. Like a dream, I felt myself rationalizing the moment. Of course this was happening. But wait…
The world was darkening quickly, tunnel-vision blurring my eyes. I turned around to bitch out whoever had struck me, but my tongue suddenly felt too thick to form words.
I heard Maria’s gasp of horror as I began to fall.
And my last thoughts before the darkness took me – the image I saw behind my eyes as the world went blank – were of my dark angel…
