“They will see us approaching,” Vlad says as we stop before any of the men can see us. “The best is driving past and shoot the fuckers in the car and the one by the gate. Thomas sent me a text that there are no men at the back.” I grunt in agreement. Looking around, I choose the men who are to drive past and shoot the Catalonians. We wait a few minutes when we see the SUV speeding down the road.
“Let’s go,” I call as they approach the car Salazar’s men are in. As we hurriedly make our way, the guy by the gate spots us. As he lifts his weapon, my men start shooting, and the guy goes down just as we reach the house. I glance towards the car two of my men are rushing towards, but by the bullet holes, I’m sure they are also dead.
Some of my men move around the house. Vlad and I rush up the few steps to the main door, and then I lift my leg and give it a good kick, which busts the lock and makes the door slide in. “Salazar,” I roar as I walk in, hearing the door at the back also bust open. If the asshole is here, there is no way he can escape.
“Vasiliev,” I hear, before I see Salazar step out of a room down the hall, a gun in his hand. I haven’t seen Salazar in a couple months, and I must be honest; they haven’t been good to him. His skin is dull, dark circles under his eyes. His dark hair is oily and stringy. It’s clear to see that this war has taken its toll on him. “You think because you found me, this will be game over?” he asks with a smirk on his face. “I am one limb of the Catalonian Mafia, but we’re like an octopus with many arms. You might kill me, but you haven’t won the war, just one battle.”
“Let them come. I am Alexey Vasiliev, boss of the Bratva, and I am not scared of your Spanish octopus arms.” With those words, I raise my arm at the same time Salazar does, but I’m quicker than he is, and shoot. His eyes widen before he falls back with a bullet hole between his eyes. “Asshole” I grunt as I lower my weapon, and then I call for Dimitry.
“Yes, Boss?” he calls from behind me.
“See if there is anything here that we might find useful, and then make sure there is no evidence left,” I order.
“Of course,” he answers as he inclines his head in respect. I walk out of the house and down the road towards where we left our cars. I can hear steps and know that Vlad and Andrei are behind me. Unlocking the car, I get in and close the door. Leaning my head back against the seat, I sigh as I close my eyes.
Peace, at least for a while. I have destroyed everything the Catalonian Mafia had in my city. They might reattribute, but it will take them a long time to regroup and be at a position to confront me again.
Starting the car, I make my way towards the club and my woman, my muscles relaxing as I think of her and the child she’s carrying. I know there will be danger in the future, but for now, my family and the Bratva are safe.
When arriving at the club, before going to look for Jade, I call Vlad into my office. “I need you to arrange something for tonight. I have placed everything on this list.” I see Vlad’s eyes widen when he looks at the list, and then a grin breaks across his face.
“Who would have thought, the great Alexey Vasiliev!” he quips.
“If you don’t get that grin off your face, I’m going to knock it off,” I grunt, but I can feel myself smile as I shake my head at him.
“I will arrange everything personally,” he says as he walks out. I follow him out the door but turn in the other direction to look for my woman. As I enter the main area of the club, I hear laughter. Looking at the bar, I stop in surprise. The club will only open in the next hour or so, so staff are cleaning and prepping for the normal influx of clients.
What I see is Jade behind the bar. Two of our barmen are showing her tricks with the bottles. Two waitresses and Lara are sitting on the opposite side of the bar, laughing as Jade attempts to copy them. I lean back against the frame of the door and smile as I see a slight smile on Lara’s face. I know that Jade is trying to bring her back to herself. I could tell her that Lara will never be the same person as she was before, but I don’t have the heart to see her lose hope.
One of the waitresses sees me and stands hurriedly as she elbows the other one. At their movement, the barmen notice me and stop with their playfulness. Jade turns, and then a naughty grin spreads over her face. “Would you consider hiring me?” she teases.
“From the look of things, I would pay more for broken bottles and spilt liquor than what you would be bringing in,” I quip. Her eyes widen, and then she laughs.
“Rude. Just think how many more clients you would get with my bubbly personality,” she says, her eyes twinkling as she walks towards me. When she’s a foot away, I take hold of her hips and pull her flush against me.
“Just think about all the guys I would have to kill for looking at you,” I murmur against her ear. She slaps my chest as she bursts out laughing. When she finally stops laughing, she raises her hand and strokes my jaw, a soft smile on her face.
“You seem less stressed than earlier. I was worried about you.”
“It’s all over,” I say, and see her brows pucker in a frown. “The war is over for now.”
“You made an agreement with them?” she asks suspiciously.
“Something like that.” I bend my head, taking advantage of her closeness, and kiss her, savouring her softness. “I still have some calls and work to do here. Do you want to wait in the office, or are you fine waiting out here?”
“Well, if you trust me to not spill or break anything,” she says cheekily.
“If you don’t behave, I’m going to spank you,” I grunt as I feel my cock hardening.
“Promise?” she whispers as her cheeks fill with colour. Lifting my hands, I frame her face and take her lips in a blistering kiss that leaves both of us wanting more.
“Go have fun. The club opens in about an hour. I want you to listen to Ivan until I come for you. If you need me, I’ll be in my office,” I rasp as I step back. The only thing on my mind now is to bend my woman across my desk and pound deep into her, but that will have to wait for tonight. Turning her around gently to face Lara, I slap her ass. “Now go.” She gasps, looking over her shoulder at me as I turn and walk towards my office.
I try to work for a couple more hours, looking at my watch every few minutes, until finally, Vlad calls to let me know that everything has been arranged to my requirements. “Andrei,” I call. The door to my office opens, and he strides in.
“Yes, Boss?”
“Go get the women so we can make our way home.” He nods and leaves. I’m stepping out of my office as they come striding down the corridor. I place my arm around Jade’s shoulders and kiss her forehead as I guide her towards the SUV, Ivan accompanying Lara.
“Did you have fun?” I ask, and feel her nod against my arm.
Andrei drives us back to the apartment. As we take the lift, Jade steps out to accompany Lara to her mom’s apartment. “I will see you upstairs. Don’t take long,” I say as the lift door closes.
When I step into the apartment, I stop. Trust Vlad to go overboard, but I grin at everything he did. There are rose petals on a path that I’m sure leads to the bedroom, with candles that are already lit following the path. I walk to our room and again stop when I see the bucket of ice with a bottle of sparkling apple cider and two champagne glasses. Rose petals cover the bed. I place my hand in the pocket of my jacket and pull out the box. I open it, setting it in the middle of our bed.
Who would ever have thought that after everything I have done, everything I’ve been through in my life, this slip of a girl would manage to make me nervous. My neck is tense with pressure, my stomach tight with nerves, and my heart racing.
I hear the main door to the apartment open, and then a gasp. I stride behind the door where Jade won’t see me as she walks in, but I will be able to see her reaction. I hear her footsteps approach, and then she’s at the door to the room. “Oh!” She gasps when she sees the bed. “Alexey?” she calls as she steps in, but then she sees the box on the bed and walks there, one of her hands to h
er chest as if wanting to slow down her heart. Tears slide down her cheeks as she bends over and picks up the small box. I step towards her. Only then does she see me.
“Alexey?” she murmurs as she lifts her hand with the box, a questioning look in her beautiful expressive eyes.
“Open it.” I can see her hands shaking slightly as she opens it.
“Oh,” she whispers as she sees the beautiful ring inside. I look at her face as she looks at the ring for the first time. A polished jade surrounded by pink diamonds. I step towards her. Taking the box from her hand, I take the ring out of it and throw the box on the bed.
“Jade, you are the only woman who has ever managed to give me peace. The love that I hold for you is eternal and sometimes overwhelming for someone who has never allowed himself to feel deeply. I promise to always protect you and our children with everything I’ve got. You burst into my life with a goodness that lightened my way. Where before there was only violence and darkness, I now have your love and light. Lyubov moya, will you be my wife?” Jade is now openly crying, but she nods. I take her hand and slip the ring onto her finger.
“It’s beautiful,” she murmurs as I lift her hand to my lips and kiss it. “My life was never easy before I met you. I didn’t believe in the all-consuming love that we read about, but you showed me that even though you’re a force of nature, you can be gentle. You have treated me like no one else has. I know that we will fight, but I also know that you will be the best husband and a great father to our child. I know that when I’m near you, I feel safe, cherished, and alive. I love you with all my soul.” I feel a knot in my throat at her words. I bend. Placing my hands on her ass, I pick her up against me. Jade crosses her legs around my waist as she joins her lips to mine.
The nervousness that I was feeling has dissipated. In its place is calmness and happiness, something I haven’t felt for very long. I know that she’s my obsession, my weakness, but I also know that I will die before I let anything happen to her.
My woman, my child, my life.
THE END.

“Are you ready?” I’ve been trying to get Jade out of the house for the last twenty minutes, Jade’s six month appointment is in half an hour and she’s taking her sweet time, the good thing is that Alexey phoned to say that he’s running late otherwise if he gets there and his woman isn’t there he will have my balls.
“Relax Nik, you guys are always so tense.” She grumbles as she finally walks towards where I’m standing by the door of Alexey the Bratva Mafia boss and Jade’s apartment. Since joining the Bratva that my function has always been to extract information from people, and I’m good at it. When people hear my name, they know I mean business, but since the boss found Jade that he asked that I be her bodyguard when there are no interrogations.
I’m not a social person and at first I didn’t relish having to babysit her, but with time she has somehow wiggled herself into my heart. Looking at her now, I wonder how a woman like her accepted someone that leads a life like we do. I have killed more men then I can count in the name of the Bratva, I can’t think of ever bringing someone into this life.
“What’s wrong with you today? You grumpier than normal.” Jade grumbles as she steps into the lift. I grunt in response as I pull her handbag from her shoulder so that I can carry it, damn women always carry all their belongings in their handbags. “You know, you put out this untouchable mean front, but deep, deep down you’re a softy. I’m not going to go into labour suddenly because of carrying a little handbag like that.” She teases.
Since the day that Jade met me that she has tried to soften me up in the most bizarre ways. She insists that there is a good man under all my outward meanness. The thing is that she’s wrong, there is no softness in me anymore. The Bratva took me in when I was just a kid, I killed my first man when I was ten, I become the one that they call when they need information extracted from someone. If it wasn’t for the Bratva I would have died in the streets of Russia, I have them to thank for being here.
I have killed many men, but only one changed my life. Four years ago, I was tasked by our Pakhan, Alexey and Vlad’s father with killing the son of one of our rivals. After being sent home in pieces to make a statement, the Pakhan sent me here to South Africa to help Alexey and to get me away from any repercussions that might arise.
There was once that I thought that maybe I could find the happiness that Alexey has found, but after a few months I had to give it up. Being the person that I am has a lot of enemies, enemies that are waiting for any opportunity to strike. I will not have a weakness, I will not allow for anyone to be in my life and then suffer because of me.
Therefore, any women I have is for one night and one night only. Stepping out of the lift I look around before guiding Jade to my black Mustang, opening the door I help her in and place her bag on the floor in front of her before closing the car door. Looking down at my wrist watch I see that I have twenty minutes to get Jade to the appointment on time, I’m surprised the boss hasn’t called me yet.
Getting in I glance to Jade to make sure that she’s buckled in before I start the car and make my way out of the underground parking. I nod my head to the two men that are standing by the entrance before I turn into traffic. “Is Alexey going to be on time?” Jade asks with a frown.
“Da”
“Is there anything going on again?” Jade asks suddenly, I glance at her and see her eyes trained on me. Only now do I notice the worry on her face. When Jade first met Alexey, we were at war with the Catalonian mafia, because of this one of Jade’s closest friends was seriously injured. Since then that I sense a fear in Jade that wasn’t there before, and even though the boss tries to keep our dealings from her, she is sensitive to the things around her.
“Niet, why?”
“Alexey came home late last night and then this morning he was tense. He tried to hide it, but I know something is bothering him.” She mumbles, as she looks out of her window. Last night the men brought in one of our men that needed some persuasion. Alexey suspected that he has been leaking information about our armaments pick-ups and drop-offs.
Dimitry, our security specialist found incoming text messages that incriminated him, but Alexey wanted to make sure and brought him to me for questioning. I spent most of my evening extracting every single piece of information from him. I’m sure that’s why Alexey was tense, finding out that one of your own men is a rat will do that to someone. When I was finished with him I had the information the boss needed, I sent him a text in the morning confirming his suspicions and maybe that’s why Jade found him to be distant.
“All is good, don’t worry” I’m not a man of many words, and I know that sometimes women need more than what I can give them. My hand tightens on the steering wheel when a memory of Raven explodes in my head, no matter how I fight, how many women I take to my bed I can’t delete her from my mind. I know that she became my obsession in the short time that we were together and soon she would have become my weakness.
It has been three years and still I think of her every day, I even drove past her apartment
a few times until I realised that she had moved. I nearly killed a man that was entering her apartment, the rage blinded me, until I found out that he was the new tenant. I know she must hate me for what I did, but it was for her own good. She didn’t know what type of man I am, and no matter how much I warned her that I wasn’t a good man she always chose to see the best in me.
My heart tightens when I think of what could have been but will never be. I know that I will never find a woman that can fulfil me like Raven did. She calmed my mind, made me forget the evil around me. Her goodness lightened the darkness in me like nothing else ever could, and that’s why I could never let anything touch her.
I park the car noticing that Alexey isn’t here yet, looking at the time I see that there’s still a few minutes. Stepping out of the car I look around to make certain that everything is secure, I will never take a chance where Jade is concerned especially now that she is carrying. Opening the door for her I help her out.
“Nik” she calls as she looks up at me, “If Alexey can’t make it, will you go in with me?” I know that Jade has been scared about her pregnancy, she confessed to me a few days ago but asked that I not say anything to Alexey.
“Da” I answer, seeing the relief on her face as I guide her towards the door. I’m about to open the door when it swings open and a woman carrying a child crashes against my chest. Automatically my arms lift around her waist to hold her up.
“Oh,” the woman gasps, long auburn hair obscuring the woman’s face. “I’m so sorry, I di…” I tense when I first hear her husky voice, and then her hazel eyes clash with mine. I see the colour leave her cheeks when she realizes who is holding her. I feel a small hand on my chin and I look down to see the same eyes as mine looking at me, my heart starts to race, and I tense when the kid smiles at me and a dimple the same as the one I have appeared.
