As the runway came in to view, two warning lights appeared on the instrument panel. Les, who had piloted the plane with his usual expertise and was about to begin his descent, knew immediately the significance of the lights.
“God, no!” he exclaimed.

Fox 32 News was the first to report.
“A private plane crashed on approach to Chicago Midway International. The plane left Teterboro airport en route for Chicago with five people on board, including the pilot and a child. At this stage, all are presumed dead. The aircraft was a private charter. The plane had an exceptional safety record. Early suggestions to the cause of the accident centre on a bird strike. No one on the ground was injured. Onlookers waiting in the private lounge witnessed the crash.”
Fox later reported that there were no survivors. Airport authorities quickly discounted the bird strike theory and suspected sabotage. Among those waiting for the flight to arrive was Brenda Mears, mother of missing fifteen-year-old Lucy. Among the debris, investigators found the remains of a smashed cello.
Officers entering the gates of a palatial property in New York in order to speak to the owner had to give way to a funeral hearse exiting the premises.
