1
Kitty
As days go this one has got to be among the worst. It started off ok but then like most storms you never see them coming. Well, I certainly never saw this one. I know Ryder was never really my boyfriend in the usual sense of the word but everyone knew he was mine. That is until a certain blonde bombshell walked into the clubhouse and blew my world apart. He shrugged me off him like a well-worn sweater and reached for a new one. He never looked back once.
Then to add insult to injury, I watched as they married in surely the quickest wedding I have ever seen not two hours later. I think a piece of my heart shattered and fell away from my soul with every word spoken. The look in his eyes as he dedicated his life to a stranger broke me in two. I wanted him to look at me with those eyes shrouded with desire. I wanted him to pledge to be mine forever because when you marry a Reaper that's what it means. Forever. No going back and no straying from the path set out before you.
I always kidded myself it would be me standing where she was. But then again why would he want me? I have always been freely available to any man who called. It's what I do best. Club whore to a group of bikers who gave me the world. They saved me from a sad and abusive life and took me in. In return, I looked after their physical needs and that was my job along with the other whores they saved. Because that’s what they do. They save the fallen and punish evil. Government assassins paid to do a job few would agree to. Ex-military and all-around heroes. These men live a hard life and it explains why their feelings got lost along the way.
When Ryder called me to his office, not ten minutes after he married another, I knew my fate. He wanted me out of the way, I understood that. Of all the women he played with he knew I would hurt the most. He wouldn't want a reminder of the past to taunt his new toy.
So, he told me how it was going to be. I was going to leave with his new bride’s brother and do what us Reapers do best - revenge the innocent. Punish those who dared to cross the line and bring about a rough justice. Ironic really, using the woman who loves you the most to avenge the one you chose over her.
Well, I owe him that at least because Ryder saved me and now it's time to pay him back. Then I’ll be free to become who I was always meant to be.
So, here I sit, in a stranger’s car speeding away from the place I've called home for the last three years. Three amazing, unbelievable, soul-shattering years that I thought would never end. They say that all good things come to an end. Well, here's the proof. I can't cry though because he never promised me his heart. You can't cry for something you never had in the first place. Maybe I'll find love one day, everyone deserves to hope at least.
Tyler looks over and says in a low voice.
“You ok?”
I nod and think of the man beside me. Tyler Donahue, Ashton's brother and the one responsible for sending her to the Reapers. He looks as destroyed as I do and just for a moment I wonder about the man who just sold his own sister.
I say softly. “What about you?”
I watch his hands grip the steering wheel tightly and feel the tension in the air.
He shrugs. “I've been better.”
I nod. “Yes, I never saw this coming when I woke up this morning.”
He sighs. “Life has a habit of constantly knocking you down. We can only hope that we get up and dust ourselves off and escape the knockbacks for a few more months.”
I wonder about his life. All I know is he walks with the most powerful men in the land - they all do.
I say softly. “What now? I mean, Ryder told me you were gonna set me up with your contacts. They’ll explain what’s involved.”
He sighs heavily. “Yes, tonight you come back with me. Tomorrow it should all be in place and you'll discover what they need you to do.”
I look down. “And you? What's your role in this?”
He laughs softly. “I have my own problems to solve. The faster I do the quicker I can get back to Ashton and give her a choice.”
I laugh softly. “You think she has one now?”
I watch his fingers grip the wheel again as he says harshly, “What do you mean? Of course, she has a choice. They are just keeping her safe. When I return she’ll leave with me.”
I laugh. “Keep telling yourself that, Donahue. When you return your sister won't want to. One thing that's sure as the mess we're in, when Ryder King sets his sights on something he never stops until it's his. The look he gave your sister told me she ain't going nowhere and what's more, she won't want to.”
Once again, we fall silent and I can tell my words have hit a chord. He has to know. Whatever path he's going down won't lead to his sister’s freedom.
It doesn't take long and we are soon at his apartment. I take a moment to admire the sleek, cool, interior of a space that tells me a lot about the man who brought me here. Modern, powerful and clinical. No homey touches and as impersonal as a show home. Once again, I wonder about the man who flicks on the light and throws his keys to the table and turns to regard me with a cool look.
“You can take the room Ashton used and freshen up. If you're hungry I'll order in. Make yourself comfortable but you'll have to entertain yourself. I've got a lot to do to set things in place, so make the most of your privacy while you still can.”
He shows me to a room at the end of the hall and before I can even turn around he's gone.
As I look around me
I feel my heart beating fast. This is so weird. I'm in a stranger’s apartment far away from everything I've known and loved for the past three years. I have nothing but the small bag I packed and don't have a clue where I go from here. I have to trust Ryder though, despite what happened he wouldn't put me in danger or make me do anything I'm uncomfortable with - would he?
I wander over to the window and look at the skyline. The light has changed to a dusky gray and matches my mood perfectly. This is it. My uncertain future. Somewhere deep inside me, a spark flickers. For the first time in my life, I have a purpose. I have an important job to do and I won't let the Reapers down.
This is my mission and I very much choose to accept it. This will be the making of Kitty Rogers. No, scrub that, this will be the rebirth of Katherine Rogers. The girl who started life with so much hope and promise before she was dragged kicking and screaming to the gutter. Well, not anymore. Everyone deserves a chance in life and I'm seizing mine with both hands. This will be to my advantage, I'll make sure of it.

Kitty
I wake the next morning in a strange bed and it takes a moment for the memory of the day before to swim into view. I feel a stirring of excitement. This is it. Today is the beginning of the rest of my life. What happens today will shape my future.
Then I think of the man who sent me here, and the pain hits me hard. The tears burn my eyes as I realize what I've lost. Ryder King. President of the Twisted Reapers and the hardest bastard I've ever met. No soul, no compassion and no feeling - the man I love.
I push away the hurt because I don't have time for it. Maybe I'll revisit it at a later date but I must harden my heart and swallow my tears because the new Katherine Rogers isn't Kitty. She was weak and easily led. She wanted a man to define her and there is no room for her in Katherine’s life. However, now she’s my new best friend because she will see me through this.
As soon as I'm ready, I head out to face my future with a confidence I need right now. I will mourn the life I've left when my future is decided.
I go in search of Tyler and find him having breakfast. He nods to the seat opposite him and smiles sadly. “It's funny, but this is a repeat of yesterday. Ashton sat exactly where you are now and look where that got her.”
He smiles reassuringly. “But then you aren't a frightened young girl who has no way out of a bad situation. I understand you are a strong woman who has not been complacent the last three years.”
Helping myself to cereal, I nod. “Living as a Reaper meant you had to learn to fend for yourself. We were taught to protect ourselves and take no shit. You could say I learned a valuable lesson in my time there and will be sure to put it to good use.”
He smiles. “Tell me about yourself, Kitty.”
I help myself to coffee. “Not much to tell. I have no family to speak of, well, none I want to anyway. I left home at a very early age with no idea of all that is wrong in the world. When the Reapers found me, I was working for a ruthless shit who made my life hell. Luckily, he had pissed off some very high-powered people, and the Reapers were sent in to dispose of him. Snake found me cowering in a room chained to a bed where I'd lived for six months. He brought me to their compound where I lived until now.”
Tyler looks concerned. “So, why did you stay? I heard you just swapped one bed for another.”
I feel the pride flashing in my eyes as I shake my head. “I know you think they used me like every man in my life before. But you're wrong. They expected nothing from me and built me back from the shadow I'd become. It was completely my choice to do what I did. They looked after me and just in case it escapes your notice because you're a guy, those guys are seriously hot. Who wouldn't want a piece of them? The trouble is, I let my heart get involved and now I'm paying the price. Maybe if I'd been content to stay where I belonged I wouldn't be here now.”
Tyler looks worried. “You know you don't have to do this, don't you?”
Smiling, I set my cup down. “You're wrong there, Donahue and you know it. This is something I very much have to do because it will set me free.”
For a moment we just stare across the table at one another. Then he nods and I see the business enter his eyes.
“Then we should begin. We'll leave in twenty minutes. You have a meeting across town with the man who will place you where you need to be. His name is Samuel Carrington. You may have heard of him, he owns Carrington Steel. Don't be put off by him, Kitty. He's every bit as hard as Ryder but he's one of the good guys. He'll tell you what you need to know.”
I feel a flicker of excitement as I contemplate the task before me. I get my revenge on the men who think they have it all. Men who use women for their own pleasure and destroy their lives as a result. Men who dress up their depravity in power and privilege. Men who rule over us and set the laws in place we have to abide by. One woman versus five powerful men. Not just any woman though. A Twisted Reaper. I can't wait.
‘Carrington Steel.’
The sign sits proudly over a large impressive building in the wealthiest part of town. Sleek and mirrored and oozing power. I've heard of this company before, who hasn't? This is a landmark around town. Hugely successful and internationally renowned. I wonder what the man in charge is like? I know nothing about him and yet he's about to decide my future.
I smooth down the skirt I'm wearing and straighten my jacket. Tyler arranged my outfit as the jeans and revealing t-shirt I usually wear has no part in my future. Kitty Rogers, the biker whore, has ceased to exist. Now I'm Katherine Rogers, cool, professional and poised and sophisticated ready to rock the world to its foundations.
I head inside without a backward glance at Tyler who dropped me here.
As I enter the large impressive reception, I smile to myself. If they knew what I was they'd call security in a heartbeat.
I approach the supercilious looking receptionist who regards me coolly and smile. “I have an appointment with Mr. Carrington. The name’s Katherine Rogers.”
She raises a well-plucked eyebrow and consults her screen. Then she pushes a visitor’s book across the desk and says in a bored voice, “Please sign in, Miss. Rogers and take a seat.”
I do as she says and sit facing the reception area. I want to see who works here. The view outside doesn't interest me, it's what's inside that counts now.
Ten minutes later I see a well-dressed lady approaching who smiles warmly.
“Miss. Rogers, I'm Selina Scott, Mr. Carrington’s PA. Please, if you'd like to follow me he's expecting you.”
I smile back at her because unlike the receptionist, I can tell she's the real deal.
She guides me to an elevator and looks at me with interest. “Have you come far, Miss. Rogers?”
I nod. “You could say that, Miss. Scott.”
She holds her head to the side and looks interested.
“Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?”
I shake my head. “Nowhere you'd know. Let's just say out of town.”
I feel her surprise but I don't care. I could have told her anything but why should I? I don't need to tell my life story to anyone who asks. They wouldn't believe me anyway. It's who I am now that counts and I'm in the process of reinventing myself, not dwelling on the past.
We enter a plush elevator and I shake my head.
“Wow, even this elevator’s impressive. This must be a great place to work.”
She nods. “It is. The company looks after its employees and has a very high retention rate.”
I nod, impressed. “What about Mr. Carrington? Is he a good boss?”
I note the sudden heightened color in her cheeks and see the brightness in her eyes and grin to myself. Obviously, someone not a million miles away has a crush on her boss. Interesting.
She laughs softly. “He's one of a kind and takes a bit of getting used to. I'm sure you'll be fine though. Just don't be put off by his cold manner. It's not personal, just the nature of the man.”
I shrug. As if I
care about his manner. It would be hard to beat Ryder on that front. He's the most miserable bastard I've ever met and I suppose that was part of the attraction.
She leads me out of the elevator to a plush carpeted hallway. Unlike downstairs this place is quiet and I can almost hear myself breathe as I walk. She leads me towards a door at the end and smiles reassuringly.
“He's in here. Good luck, Miss. Rogers.”
Before I even register why I need luck, she knocks sharply on the door and I follow her inside.
I hear her say. “Miss. Rogers to see you, Mr. Carrington.”
Then I look over at the man who holds my fate in his hands and take a sharp breath. Oh. My. God.

Sam
As soon as the door opens, I feel the interest surge through me. Ryder told me to expect his latest protégé and I suppose I'm curious. I don't usually do what he's asked but I owe him the largest favor a man can ever owe and she is here to collect. I was only too happy to oblige. The men in his sights fill me with disgust. They decide how things run and yet break all the rules they have set in place. They need to learn the hard lesson coming their way and I can't wait to see what this woman has up her sleeve. One thing's certain, Ryder wouldn't send someone who wasn't up to the job. This will be interesting.
So, as the door opens I look up with interest. I wasn't expecting what walked into my office. The woman in front of me is something else. Beautiful doesn't do her justice. Stunning, not even close. Long dark hair hangs to her shoulders in waves and the deepest brown eyes flash across the room at me. She stands tall and proud and her business suit does little to disguise the amazing curves contained within the fabric. She stands tall on heels and as weapons go, she is nuclear in her effect.
