  No.

He needed to leave her alone. He needed to honor her wishes. Trying to force the issue would only make matters worse. He needed to accept the fact that he would never see or talk to Kasey Stielson again for the rest of his life. He needed to move on.

  Sally brought the food.

“There you go,” she said. “Let me know if you need anything else.”

  “Thanks,” Wahlman said.

He took a bite of the burger. It was good. Everything tasted fresh. The meat, the bun, the lettuce leaves, the tomato slices. Even the pickle wedge on the side of the plate was top-notch. The fries were crispy and seasoned just right, and Sally was there with a steaming decanter every time the coffee in his cup started getting low. Rock Wahlman had traveled all over the world during his career in the Navy, and he could honestly say that the food on the plate in front of him was some of the best he’d ever eaten—anywhere.

He finished his meal and paid Sally and left her a nice tip and got a cup of coffee to go. Walked out to the SUV and climbed inside and started the engine. He needed a new driver’s license and a different automobile. He couldn’t continue being the same man he’d been in Reality, Missouri, and he couldn’t continue driving the same vehicle. Within forty-eight hours, every law enforcement agency in the country would have a copy of his current license and all the details on the SUV. It was only a matter of time until a cop spotted him and pulled him over.

New credentials would cost some money.

  But he had some money.

He had twenty thousand dollars in his pocket.

He would eventually find a way to pay Kasey’s parents back, even though they had said not to worry about it. He would pay them back, but right now he needed the cash to continue doing what he was doing. He would basically be starting from scratch, and he would be totally on his own now. But that was okay. He would dig deep and find a way to carry on.

  It was what he did.

  It was who he was.

  It was in his blood.
